Leisure, Social Capital and Life Turns in Deviant Youth
2017
Brief review of the literature on the creation of social capital within leisure time contexts to a notion of social capital in terms of “relational goods” (Arai, Pedlar, 1997; Blackshaw, Long, 2005; Hemingway, 1999) It. Claims that such studies focus both on the availability of leisure time among people belonging to different social groups and on the relation between the amount of leisure time, its allocation and the construction of social capital in the community by means of the activities people do during such time (Rohe, 2004). I discuss some studies regarding the ways in which a particular age range - youth - produces social capital in leisure time contexts and I focus on some studies r…

Media/Digital Competence. The European and Italian Definition
2016
In 2007, the European Union Commission issued a Communication titled A European approach to media literacy in the digital environment where media literacy is clearly defined as “the ability to access the media, to understand and to critically evaluate different aspects of the media and media contents and to create communications in a variety of contexts” (European Commission, 2007: 3). Effectiveness of a mobile app intervention to prevent dating violence in residential child care
2020
ABSTRACT This study focuses on the effectiveness of an app-based, monitored intervention using the Liad@s app in a residential youth-care setting. The aim of this intervention is to reduce maladaptive beliefs and attitudes linked to dating violence: distortions or myths about romantic love and hostile and benevolent dimensions of sexism. A quasi-experimental pre-post study with a control group was carried out. Participants were 71 adolescents from 9 group homes in Valencia (Spain). The outcomes measures were hostile and benevolent sexism (Ambivalent Sexism Inventory - ASI), ambivalence and prejudice towards men (Ambivalence toward Men Inventory - AMI), and myths about romantic love. The res…
What keeps young adults in permanent poverty? A comparative analysis using ECHP
2009
Abstract Previous studies suggest that there are strong differences in the rates of youth poverty across European countries. Rather surprisingly, it is found to be high in Scandinavian countries, and relatively speaking, lower in Mediterranean and Anglo-Saxon countries. This somewhat unexpected finding prompts the question whether the incidence of poverty is an appropriate measure of youth disadvantage. Instead of considering poverty rates we consider the length of recorded poverty spells, taking into account explicitly the temporal sequencing of the episodes of poverty. Using the European Community Household Panel, individuals are classified into different groups of poverty permanence, eac…

Children born of War and Social Trust - Analyzing Consequences of Rejection
2017
AbstractThis article examines the question whether rejection experiences negatively relate to the social trust of Children Born of War (CBOW) and if this connection is mediated by sense of self-worth. CBOW is a group of people born out of relations during war- and post-war times, involving one parent being a foreign soldier, a para-military officer, rebel or other person directly participating in the hostilities, while the other parent is a member of the native population. Also children born to child soldiers and children fathered by members of a peacekeeping troop are included within this group. These children, due to their biological background, often grow up in a surrounding in which the…
Intersectionalities, dis/abilities and subjectification in deaf LGBT people: An exploratory study in Sicily
2016
The article discusses the multiple discrimination, normalization and stigmatization experienced by deaf LGBT youth in Sicily, Italy, on the basis of a study of their everyday life (specifically school years and peer interactions). So far in Italy, very little attention has been paid to multiple discrimination and, specifically, to homophobic violence towards disabled individuals. It is, therefore, impossible to consider any valid sampling of the desired population and very few reports have been produced. The authors, a sociologist and a psychologist, carry out an analysis of the results obtained from interviews with 15 LGBT individuals recruited through social networks, thematic chats, and …
