Determination of the relative quantum yields of the conformational species of autoassociating polypeptide gramicidin A in organic solvent using combi…
1987
Abstract A simple, novel method is proposed for the accurate determination of the relative quantum yields of each of the interconverting conformational species of the autoassociating polypeptide gramicidin A in organic solution. The method is based on fitting the experimental results obtained independently from fluorescence emission spectroscopy and high performance liquid chromatography. The fluorescence parameters obtained are discussed in terms of the structural features of the individual conformational species. The advantages of this approach and its possible application to other different organic solvents or to other autoassociating polypeptides are also considered.
Unified model for the ultrafast decay of pyrimidine nucleobases.
2006
Ultrafast decay processes detected after absorption of UV radiation in gas-phase pyrimidine nucleobases uracil, thymine, and cytosine are ascribed to the barrierless character of the pathway along the low-lying 1(pipi*) hypersurface connecting the Franck-Condon region with an out-of-plane distorted ethene-like conical intersection with the ground state. Longer lifetime decays and low quantum yield emission are on the other hand related to the presence of a 1(pipi*) state planar minimum on the S1 surface and the barriers to access other conical intersections. A unified model for the three systems is established on the basis of accurate multiconfigurational CASPT2 calculations, whereas the ef…
Recent results from PHENIX on the evolution of hot QCD
2014
The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider’s (RHIC) energy scan program explores the phase transition between the hadron gas and the quark gluon plasma phases by varying center-of-mass energies from √sNN = 7.7 to 200 GeV and using various system sizes. The nuclear modification factor of π0 and the azimuthal anisotropy of charged hadrons were measured in Au+Au collisions at c.m. energies √sNN = 39, 62.4 and 200 GeV. In addition, we present recent results of direct photon yield and anisotropy measurements in Au+Au collisions at c.m. energy √sNN = 200 GeV.
Persistent electron-transfer state of a pi-complex of acridinium ion inserted between porphyrin rings of cofacial bisporphyrins
2006
A free-base cofacial bisporphyrin, H(4)DPOx, forms a pi-complex with acridinium ion (AcH(+)) by pi-pi interaction in benzonitrile (PhCN). Formation of the H(4)DPOx-AcH(+) pi-complex was probed by UV-vis and NMR spectroscopy. The binding constant between AcH(+) and H(4)DPOx is determined as 9.7 x 10(4) M(-)(1). Photoinduced electron transfer (ET) from the H(4)DPOx to the AcH(+) moiety occurred efficiently in the pi-complex to form the ET state (H(4)DPOx(*)(+)-AcH(*)). The ET state is successfully detected by laser flash photolysis. The lifetime of the ET state is 18 mus in PhCN at 298 K, and the quantum yield of the ET state is 90%. The temperature dependence of the ET state lifetime has bee…
On the Importance of Ligand-Centered Excited States in the Emission of Cyclometalated Ir(III) Complexes
2021
The photophysical behavior of the cyclometalating Ir(III) complexes [Ir(ppy)2(bpy)]+, where Hppy is 2-phenylpyridine and bpy is 2,2′-bipyridine (complex 1), and [Ir(diFppy)2(dtb-bpy)]+, where diFppy is 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)pyridine and dtb-bpy is 4,4′-di-tert-butyl-2,2′-bipyridine (complex 2), has been theoretically investigated by performing density functional theory calculations. The two complexes share the same molecular skeleton, complex 2 being derived from complex 1 through the addition of fluoro and tert-butyl substituents, but present notable differences in their photophysical properties. The remarkable difference in their emission quantum yields (0.196 for complex 1 in dichloromet…
The Role of Site-Specific Hydrogen Bonding Interactions in the Solvation Dynamics of N-Acetyltryptophanamide
2012
Measurements of the ultrafast broadband UV fluorescence of N-acetyltryptophanamide (NATA) provide detailed information on its relaxation patterns in three different solvents: methanol (MeOH), water and acetonitrile (ACN). Several processes leading to excited state solvation and cooling are found to occur on different characteristic time scales and are thoroughly analyzed. Comparison between protic MeOH and aprotic ACN allows one to single out a 12 Ps component in the former, which is attributed to the rearrangement of H-bonds existing between the protic solvent and excited NATA. This significantly stabilizes the excited state and provides the molecule with an efficient cooling mechanism. Th…
Zeaxanthin Dependent and Zeaxanthin Independent Changes in Nonphotochemical Energy Dissipation
1994
Summary The influence of zeaxanthin on high-energy-state quenching (qE) of room temperature chlorophyll fluorescence and on the quantum yield of oxygen evolution(ФO2) has been studied with isolated spinach thylakoids. A set of three different pretreatments was tested which all led to thylakoids with high contents of zeaxanthin. Depending on the presence of light the pretreatments differed strongly with respect to their effect on nonphotochemical fluorescence quenching. Independently from the extent of changes in nonphotochemical energy dissipation in the membrane energized state as reflected by nonphotochemical quenching the light pretreatments caused also changes in nonphotochemical energy…
Interpretation of the photoluminescence decay kinetics in metal halide perovskite nanocrystals and thin polycrystalline films
2020
Abstract In this paper we present critical analysis of different points of view on interpretation of the photoluminescence (PL) decay kinetics in lead halide perovskites prepared in the form of well passivated nanocrystals (PNCs) or thin polycrystalline layers. In addition to the literature data, our own measurements are also considered. For PNCs, a strong dependence of the PL lifetimes on the type of passivating ligand was observed with a consistently high PL quantum yield. It is shown that such ligand effects, as well as a decrease in the PL lifetime with decreasing temperature, are well qualitatively explained by the phenomenological model of thermally activated delayed luminescence, in …
