Oxidation of Zn nanoparticles probed by online optical spectroscopy during nanosecond pulsed laser ablation of a Zn plate in H2O
2015
We report online UV-Visible absorption and photoluminescence measurements carried out during and after pulsed laser ablation of a zinc plate in water, which clarify the events leading to the generation of ZnO nanoparticles. A transient Zn/ZnO core-shell structure is revealed by the coexistence of the resonance absorption peak around 5.0 eV due to Zn surface plasmon resonance and the edge at 3.5 eV of ZnO. The growth kinetics of ZnO, selectively probed by the exciton luminescence at 3.3 eV, begins only after a ∼30 s delay from the onset of laser ablation. We also detect the luminescence at 2.3 eV of ZnO oxygen vacancies, yet rising with an even longer delay (∼100 s). These results show that …
Targets on superhydrophobic surfaces for laser ablation ion sources
2012
Target preparation techniques for a laser ablation ion source at the Penning-trap mass spectrometer TRIGA-TRAP have been investigated with regard to future experiments with actinides. To be able to perform mass measurements on these nuclides considering their limited availability, an efficient target preparation technique is mandatory. Here, we report on a new approach for target production using backings, which are pretreated in a way that a superhydrophobic surface is formed. This resulted in improved targets with a more homogeneous distribution of the target material compared to standard techniques with unmodified backings. It was demonstrated that the use of these new targets in a laser…
Reliable Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation Substrate Assessment During Sinus Rhythm Through Optimal Estimation of Local Activation Waves Dynamics
2020
[EN] The analysis of coronary sinus (CS) electrograms (EGMs) during catheter ablation (CA) of atrial fibrillation (AF) is highly important for AF substrate evaluation. However, channels of the CS catheter may be affected by vigorous cardiac movement and bad contact. This work investigates the most reliable channels in preserving the AF dynamics during sinus rhythm (SR). Local activation waves (LAWs) were detected in 44 bipolar CS recordings of 60-300 seconds duration in 28 paroxysmal AF patients undergoing CA. Recordings consisted of five channels: distal, mid-distal, medial, mid-proximal and proximal. LAW duration, amplitude, area and correlation between dominant morphologies of each chann…
Pterostilbene and 3′-hydroxypterostilbene are effective apoptosis-inducing agents in MDR and BCR-ABL-expressing leukemia cells
2005
Pterostilbene and 3,5-hydroxypterostilbene are the natural 3,5-dimethoxy analogs of trans-resveratrol and piceatannol, two compounds which can induce apoptosis in tumor cells. In previous studies we demonstrated the importance of a 3,5-dimethoxy motif in conferring pro-apoptotic activity to stilbene based compounds so we now wanted to evaluate the ability of pterostilbene and 3,5-hydroxypterostilbene in inducing apoptosis in sensitive and resistant leukemia cells. When tested in sensitive cell lines, HL60 and HUT78, 3'-hydroxypterostilbene was 50-97 times more potent than trans-resveratrol in inducing apoptosis, while pterostilbene appeared barely active. However, both compounds, but not tr…
Variability in δ13C values between individual Daphnia ephippia: Implications for palaeo-studies
2018
The stable carbon isotope ratio (δ13C value) of Daphnia spp. resting egg shells (ephippia) provides information on past changes in Daphnia diet. Measurements are typically performed on samples of ≥20 ephippia, which obscures the range of values associated with individual ephippia. Using a recently developed laser ablation-based technique, we perform multiple δ13C analyses on individual ephippia, which show a high degree of reproducibility (standard deviations 0.1–0.5‰). We further measured δ13C values of 13 ephippia from surface sediments of three Swiss lakes. In the well-oxygenated lake with low methane concentrations, δ13C values are close to values typical for algae (−31.4‰) and the rang…
Intraoperative cryoablation of atrial fibrillation with the old-fashioned cryode tips: a simple, effective, and inexpensive method.
2006
Nowadays atrial fibrillation is usually treated simultaneously with cardiac procedures, and new cryo-systems have been developed for performing easier and faster intraoperative ablation. However, the old cryode designs can still be useful in surgical practice and represent a more cost-effective method. In this article we present a technique using old-fashioned cryodes for intraoperative treatment of atrial fibrillation and comment on its advantages and limitations.
Device Therapy for Rate Control: Pacing, Resynchronisation and AV Node Ablation
2017
Atrioventricular node ablation (AVNA) is generally reserved for patients whose atrial fibrillation (AF) is refractory all other therapeutic options, since the recipients will often become pacemaker dependent. In such patients, this approach may prove particularly useful, especially if a tachycardia-induced cardiomyopathy is suspected. Historically, an "ablate and pace" approach has involved AVNA and right ventricular pacing, with or without an atrial lead. There is also an evolving role for atrioventricular node ablation in patients with AF who require cardiac resynchronisation therapy for treatment of systolic heart failure. A mortality benefit over pharmacotherapy has been demonstrated in…

Counting Zeros of Holomorphic Functions
2019
In this chapter we will generalize Proposition 3.4.6 of Hager about counting the zeros of holomorphic functions of exponential growth. In Hager and Sjostrand (Math Ann 342(1):177–243, 2008. http://arxiv.org/abs/math/0601381) we obtained such a generalization, by weakening the regularity assumptions on the functions ϕ. However, due to some logarithmic losses, we were not quite able to recover Hager’s original result, and we still had a fixed domain Γ with smooth boundary.
Curative therapies for hepatocellular carcinoma: an update and perspectives.
2015
Curative treatments, including liver transplantation, surgical resection and percutaneous treatments, are the recommended therapies in BCLC-0 (Barcelona Clinic of Liver Cancer) or BCLC-A hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This review provides an overview of some issues of clinical importance concerning curative treatments in HCC.
