Opto-mechanical artificial eye with accommodative ability.
2015
The purpose of this study was to describe the design and characterization of a new opto-mechanical artificial eye (OMAE) with accommodative ability. The OMAE design is based on a second-pass configuration where a small source of light is used at the artificial retina plane. A lens whose focal length can be changed electronically was used to add the accommodation capability. The changes in the OMAE's aberrations with the lens focal length, which effectively changes the accommodative state of the OMAE, were measured with a commercial aberrometer. Changes in power and aberrations with room temperature were also measured. The OMAE's higher-order aberrations (HOAs) were similar to the ones of th…
Communication accommodation between healthcare providers at a private hospital in England : how does identity talk?
2015
A healthcare environment consists of a number of people who perform different roles, and at differing levels of seniority on the workplace hierarchy. How these people communicate with each other is based on many individual factors, including language, culture, ethnicity, and in what way they perceive their own and others’ seniority. These factors can complicate communication, and lead to communication that is ineffective and/or failed. This thesis used the Communication Accommodation Theory to explain how verbal communication between healthcare providers is achieved, and Social Identity Theory to explain why communication is achieved in a particular way. Through analysis of one-on-one inter…
Turismo inbound e ricettività in Sicilia: un’analisi della distribuzione spaziale
2010
In the last few years a significant increase in tourist accommodation has taken place in Sicily, both in hotels and in other hospitality. The increased number of accommodation beds has been encouraged by a multilevel policy of investments – both regional and European – aimed at filling the qualitative and quantitative gap penalizing Sicily in the field of tourism and accommodation competition. In some way, it may seem that the purpose of improving the accommodation supply in our Island has been obtained: indeed, while in 2000, the year when the previous European planning started, the number of accommodation beds in hotels was, in Sicily, of 4,2% of the national amount, in 2008 the Island ra…
Finnish health care and social work students' perceptions of Finnish-English code-switching : a survey study
2015
Millennials, Peer-to-Peer Accommodation and the Hotel Industry
2016
Today’s world market is a buyer’s market and the new customers, the millennials, are thoughtto be distinctively different than others. Technologically comfortable, the most educated generationever, multitaskers, and strongly influenced by friends and peers, millennials have a different buyingbehaviour and other expectations from service providers. Thus, companies from the hospitalityindustry and policy makers face a number of challenges in trying to meet their (future) demands. Atthe same time, the “sharing economy” has led to the rise of the peer-to-peer accommodation sectorand to a new business model (Airbnb). The aim of this paper is to present these challenges for the hotel industry, be…
Sexual communication among intercultural couples with a Finnish partner
2016
In this study the topic of sexual communication, satisfaction, and accommodation in intercultural relationships is examined. Intercultural couples are in need of more attention in scholarly research, especially on the topic of sexual communication. This study aims to bring the topic into clear view. One research question leads this study in asking: “what factors play a role in how intercultural couples discuss sex?” 18 participants, making up 9 couples, were interviewed separately about their sexual communication; following the interviews each couple completed a survey together on the same topic. The Communication Accommodation Theory is utilized to evaluate how accommodative intercultural …
Precio no monetario percibido en alojamientos e-peer-to-peer. La perspectiva de los huéspedes de Airbnb
2021
[EN] Price is considered as a key variable in predicting buying behavior. However, few studies have focused on how non-monetary price is affected and can affect other components of the consumer endogenous variables. This paper seeks (1) to analyze the effects of antecedents of behavioural price (past experience, the benefits and risks of peer to peer accommodation services) on the guest perceived price, and (2) to determine the effect of this price and past experience on guest intentions. With a sample of 136 Airbnb guests and the use of SEM, results show that past experience, financial risk, and time risk influence the non-monetary perceived price. This price and past experience affect gue…
IMI Prevention of Myopia and Its Progression
2021
The prevalence of myopia has markedly increased in East and Southeast Asia, and pathologic consequences of myopia, including myopic maculopathy and high myopia-associated optic neuropathy, are now some of the most common causes of irreversible blindness. Hence, strategies are warranted to reduce the prevalence of myopia and the progression to high myopia because this is the main modifiable risk factor for pathologic myopia. On the basis of published population-based and interventional studies, an important strategy to reduce the development of myopia is encouraging schoolchildren to spend more time outdoors. As compared with other measures, spending more time outdoors is the safest strategy…
