Fysioterapeuters erfaringer med bruk av fysisk aktivitet til eldre deprimerte

2015

This article is based upon a study of the experiences of physiotherapists working with elderly depressed patients and the use of physical activity. Depression in the elderly is a common condition, and it is estimated to be the second most common cause of failing health towards 2020. Physical activity has a positive effect on depression in the elderly. The aim of this study was to investigate the experiences of physiotherapist`s in the treatment of elderly depressed patients over 65 years of age. Data was collected by qualitative reasearch interviews of 5 physiotherapists. Important findings of this study were that the physiotherapists experienced that they did not get any referrals to treat…

Long Term Leisure Time Physical Activity Has a Positive Effect on Bone Mass Gain in Girls

2009

The purpose of this 7-year prospective longitudinal study was to examine whether the level and consistency of leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) during adolescence affected the bone mineral content (BMC) and bone mineral density (BMD) attained at early adulthood. The study subjects were 202 Finnish girls who were 10 to 13 years of age at baseline. Bone area (BA), BMC, and BMD of the total body (TB), total femur (TF), and lumbar spine (L2–L4) were assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Scores of LTPA were obtained by questionnaire. Girls were divided into four groups: consistently low physical activity (GLL), consistently high (GHH), and changed from low to high (GLH) and fro…

Self-reported flares are predictors of radiographic progression in rheumatoid arthritis patients in 28-joint disease activity score remission: a 24-m…

2016

Background Disease flares are common in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and are related to structural damage. However, few data on the impact of flares reported by patients on radiographic progression are available. Our aim was to investigate whether overall flares (OF), self-reported flares (SRF) and short flares assessed at the visit (SF) predict radiographic progression in RA patients in DAS28 (28-joint disease activity score) remission. Methods We reviewed the records of RA patients included in our database. We considered all patients who had a period of at least 24 months in remission (DAS28 0. Patients were assessed every 3 months and flares were recorded. We defined SRF as any worsening of…

Exercise for the intervertebral disc : a 6-month randomised controlled trial in chronic low back pain

2020

Background context Muscle, bone and tendon respond anabolically to mechanical forces. Whether the intervertebral disc (IVD) can benefit from exercise is unclear. Purpose To examine whether exercise can beneficially affect IVD characteristics. Study design/setting This is a single-blinded 6-month randomised controlled trial (ACTRN12615001270505) in an exercise and physiotherapy clinic. Patient sample Forty patients with chronic non-specific low back pain (NSCLBP) are included in this study. Outcome measures The primary outcome was lumbar IVD T2 time (MRI). Secondary outcomes included IVD diffusion coefficient and IVD expansion with short-duration lying. Methods Twenty patients progressively …

Regulation of Apoptosis by Inhibitors of Apoptosis (IAPs).

2013

Abstract Inhibitors of Apoptosis (IAPs) are a family of proteins with various biological functions including regulation of innate immunity and inflammation, cell proliferation, cell migration and apoptosis. They are characterized by the presence of at least one N-terminal baculoviral IAP repeat (BIR) domain involved in protein-protein interaction. Most of them also contain a C-terminal RING domain conferring an E3-ubiquitin ligase activity. In drosophila, IAPs are essential to ensure cell survival, preventing the uncontrolled activation of the apoptotic protease caspases. In mammals, IAPs can also regulate apoptosis through controlling caspase activity and caspase-activating platform format…

The empowerment of young girls and women through sport and physical activity participation : a case study in Ethiopia

2017

As a consequence of gender-role socialization, women across the world are still facing unfair perceptions and treatments. Being empowered at the individual level would serve as a platform from which women could combat the existing inequality treatment and perception to gain full control over their lives. Sport and physical activities could serve as a platform for women to gain control. The aim of this research is to explore the potential that sport and physical activity (PA) have in the empowerment of young girls and women in Ethiopia. Additional questions were used in order to further explore any disempowerment experiences as a result of sport and physical activity participation, barriers …
