Decorum. An ancient idea of everyday aesthetics

2021

Everyday Aesthetics was born in the 21ST Century as a sub-discipline of Anglo-American Aesthetics and it has spread in the international debate. However, the contribute of historical perspective has not properly explored yet. Is it possible to trace the history of everyday aesthetics before the official birth of this discipline? I will try and give you an affirmative answer by focusing on an exemplary category: that of the decorum. Using the history of ideas (W. Tatatrkiewicz), I will analyse the Greek concept of prepon and the similar Latin concepts of decorum which express the idea of "convenience" or "fitness to purpose" in the ethical and rhetorical sphere. Later I will analyse the evol…

In Defense of Cities : On Negative Presentation of Urban Areas in Environmental Preference Studies

2019

This paper critiques a common research method, image-based studies, in assessing environmental preferences. The method is used, in particular, in the fields of environmental psychology, landscape studies, and health studies, here called empirical environmental preference studies or EEP studies. I argue that the established view in the EEP field that nature is inherently experienced as more aesthetically appealing and restorative than urban environments may be biased because of the image-based method. This paper presents a literature review of EEP studies, discussing them in a framework of environmental and everyday aesthetics. The conclusion is that EEP studies may strip cities of their phy…

Archibald Alison e l’estetica del quotidiano? Una prospettiva neoestetica

2020

A comparative study of aesthetic perceptions of malocclusion among general practice dentists, orthodontists and the public using a visual analogue sc…

2016

Background Perception of malocclusion varies among individuals and among patients and practitioners. Although several indices that tend to coincide in many aspects and unify criteria, no single index has been recognised as the most suitable for assessing orthodontic treatment need. Moreover, orthodontists are not always aware of the differences in perception of malocclusion between patients and practitioners. Objetives To examine the perception of dental anaesthetics amongst dentists, orthodontists and the general population, study the relationship between the perception of dental aesthetics and the severity of the malocclusion, using the visual analogue scale and the IOTN-AC, and investiga…

USA on the road: da The Americans di Robert Frank ad American Surfaces di Stephen Shore

2018

Robert Frank’s and Stephen Shore’s photographic reportages and their travels document an identity of the United States different from the conventional representations that usually show a successful country, able to enforce its social, economic, political, and aesthetics models. These reportages represent an other America, far from the stereotypes and full of contradictions: the places of common experience (almost non-places), the characters disillusioned and frustrated by the American dream, the banality of the situations represented, the commonplace, show that besides a winner’s imagery (like, recently, the one represented by Trump but also by Pete Souza, official photographer of Barack Ob…

Neoestetica: un archetipo disciplinare

2011

The paper focuses on Du Bos’ contribution to the birth of aesthetics. Du Bos elaborates – in an anticlassicistical tone – three central notions: 1) that of “artificial passion”, 2) of the taste of “the public” (which is in turn linked to a peculiar conception of “feeling”) and 3) of “artistic genius”. The main tenet will be that such an approach does lead to a “philosophy of fine arts” (or of “artistic beauty”), i.e. the discipline with which modern aesthetics ends up identifying at the end of the xviii century. Hence the theoretical, and not just historical, interest for this author, especially when having an eye to neoaesthetics, viz. aesthetics as begotten by the crisis of the modern aes…

DesignArt. Ibridazioni creative tra arte e oggetti d’uso

2016

Texts and Visuals in the Online Aesthetics of Migration: Translation as (Re)narration in the Creative Industries

2018

Texts and visuals in the online aesthetics of migration: Translation as (re)narration in the creative cultural industries Within the context of Computer-mediated communication discourse (Herring 1996; 2011, 2015), this study focuses on the investigation of Internet modalities and genres through which experiences of current migration are transferred from personal stories into online public narratives, also known as “transmedia storytelling” (Jenkins 2006; Jenkins, Ford, Green 2013). The art of telling migrant stories on the web produces acts of translation in terms of (re)statements of migrant lives. This mechanism owns a repository function, which is meant to spread narratives of migration …

Estetica e oggetti quotidiani ?

2014

According to Hegel and to the romantic theory, Aesthetics is a philosophy of art. However, nowadays we can experience the beauty not only with art, but also with every product (fashion, videogames, cars, technological products). So we can query if the realm of aesthetics should hold also everyday products and how this could transform the traditional aesthetic categories. This essay aim to answer these questions. It aim furthermore to sketch the product’s theoretical foundations referring to national and international debate which have dealt with everyday aesthetics according to different point of view.
