Lactococcus lactis ssp lactis bv diacetylactis, immobilized in calcium alginate beads, was grown in synthetic medium in a continuous flow reactor. Cell distribution inside the gel, as well as the activity of various enzymes, was measured after 30 h of operation. The included biomass tended to concentrate at the periphery of the bead along a section of radius about 100 μm long. ATPase activity was maximal in this zone. The activity of NADH oxidase, alcohol dehydrogenase, diacetyl reductase and acetoin reductase, which are repressed in the presence of citrate, were higher in the deeper zones than at the surface of the beads. This investigation was directed towards the development of a process which produces a fermented cream of greatly reduced cell number.Lactococcus lactis subsp.Lactis andLactococcus lactis subsp.lactis biovardiacetylactis were entrapped separately in normal or two-layer Ca-alginate gel beads. Pasteurized cream (31% fat content) was inoculated with free-cells and with normal or two-layer beads. A dynamic diffusion-reaction-growth model is proposed for the study of lactic fermentation, the bioconversion of citric acid, and cell release in an immobilized cell reactor [pH-stat continuous stirred tank-reactor (CSTR)]. The model correctly simulates the onset of fermentation and colonization of the gel, followed by the steady state. External diffusion is nonlimiting and internal diffusion is limited by high cell densities at the periphery of the gel beads. The adsorption capacity of an activated carbon – calcium alginate composite material (ACAA-Ca) has been tested with the aim of developing a new and more efficient adsorbent material to remove Pb(II) ion from aqueous solution. The study was carried out at pH = 5, in NaCl medium and in the ionic strength range 0.1–0.75 mol L−1. Pseudomonas corrugata and P. mediterranea are soil inhabitant bacteria, generally living as endophytes on symptomless plants and bare soil, but also capable of causing plant diseases. AbstractActive alginate-based coatings with quercetin glycoside and complexes of hydroxyapatite/quercetin-glycoside were used to study the shelf life of fresh cut papaya stored at 6 °C. Hydroxyapatite was used as a carrier for the release of the bioactive compound. The parameters considered affecting the quality of the fruit during storage were weight loss, color, texture, sugars and volatile compounds. Hybrid montmorillonite-alginate beads (MABs) were prepared by the ion-gelation method from alginate and montmorillonite clay suspension dropped in a calcium chloride solution. Similarly, iron-enriched beads (Fe-MABs) were prepared using iron-exchanged montmorillonite. All beads were characterized by atomic absorption and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The efficiency of Fe-MABs as catalysts for the solar photo-Fenton performed at initial pH = 7.0 was evaluated by varying the catalyst amount and hydrogen peroxide concentration, and monitoring the removal of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) at initial concentration of 10 ppm. Abstract Hybrid alginate montmorillonite iron enriched beads (Fe-MABs) were synthesized using ion gelation method and used as catalyst in Escherichia coli inactivation in neutral solar photo-Fenton conditions. A kinetic analysis showed that the E. coli inactivation by Fe-MABs followed a pseudo first-order kinetics model. Complete disinfection was achieved in 1 h of irradiation by using Fe-MABs in the presence of 10 ppm of H 2 O 2 . Preliminary studies on recyclability showed possible beads reused up to four times. Overall, Fe-MABs represent an environmental friendly material able to achieve bactericidal performance measured by E. coli inactivation under photooxidative conditions.
