Statistics of Galaxy Clustering

2006

In this introductory talk we will establish connections between the statistical analysis of galaxy clustering in cosmology and recent work in mainstream spatial statistics. The lecture will review the methods of spatial statistics used by both sets of scholars, having in mind the cross-fertilizing purpose of the meeting series. Special topics will be: description of the galaxy samples, selection effects and biases, correlation functions, nearest neighbor distances, void probability functions, Fourier analysis, and structure statistics.

Transport Properties of Correlated Electrons in High Dimensions

We develop a new general algorithm for finding a regular tight-binding lattice Hamiltonian in infinite dimensions for an arbitrary given shape of the density of states (DOS). The availability of such an algorithm is essential for the investigation of broken-symmetry phases of interacting electron systems and for the computation of transport properties within the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). The algorithm enables us to calculate the optical conductivity fully consistently on a regular lattice, e.g., for the semi-elliptical (Bethe) DOS. We discuss the relevant f-sum rule and present numerical results obtained using quantum Monte Carlo techniques.

Gauss-Type Quadrature Formulae for Parabolic Splines with Equidistant Knots

We construct Gauss, Lobatto, and Radau quadrature formulae associated with the spaces of parabolic splines with equidistant knots. These quadrature formulae are known to be asymptotically optimal in Sobolev spaces W p 3. Sharp estimates for the error constant in W ∞ 3 are given.

A Lagrange Multiplier Based Domain Decomposition Method for the Solution of a Wave Problem with Discontinuous Coefficients

In this paper we consider the numerical solution of a linear wave equation with discontinuous coefficients. We divide the computational domain into two subdomains and use explicit time difference scheme along with piecewise linear finite element approximations on semimatching grids. We apply boundary supported Lagrange multiplier method to match the solution on the interface between subdomains. The resulting system of linear equations of the “saddle-point” type is solved efficiently by a conjugate gradient method.

A crop field modeling to simulate agronomic images

In precision agriculture, crop/weed discrimination is often based on image analysis but though several algorithms using spatial information have been proposed, not any has been tested on relevant databases. A simple model that simulates virtual fields is developed to evaluate these algorithms. Virtual fields are made of crops, arranged according to agricultural practices and represented by simple patterns, and weeds that are spatially distributed using a statistical approach. Identification and monitoring of PEUs in a heterogeneous landscape is the most difficult task in medium resolution satellite images datasets. Conductivity imaging with interior potential measurements

In this article, we present two reconstruction methods intended to be used for conductivity imaging with data obtained from a planar electrical impedance tomography device for breast cancer detection. The inverse problem to solve is different from the classical inverse conductivity problem. We reconstruct the electrical conductivity of a two-dimensional domain from boundary measurements of currents and interior measurements of the potential. One reconstruction algorithm is based on a discrete resistor model; the other one is an integral equation approach for smooth conductivity distributions.

Abstract Climatic oscillations in the Quaternary have played a major role in changing the geographical distribution of plant species. Recent molecular work has provided new insights into the location of glacial refugia and routes of postglacial expansion.
