High rate concentration measurement of molecular gas mixtures using a spatial detection technique

International audience; Concentration measurement in molecular gas mixtures using a snapshot spatial imaging technique is reported. The approach consists of measuring the birefringence of the molecular sample when field-free alignment takes place, each molecular component producing a signal with an amplitude depending on the molecular density. The concentration measurement is obtained on a single-shot basis by probing the time-varying birefringence through femtosecond time-resolved optical polarigraphy (FTOP). The relevance of the method is assessed in air.

Origin of neuronal-like receptors in Metazoa: cloning of a metabotropic glutamate/GABA-like receptor from the marine sponge Geodia cydonium.

To date, no conclusive evidence has been presented for the existence of neuronal-like elements in Porifera (sponges). In the present study, isolated cells from the marine sponge Geodia cydonium are shown to react to the excitatory amino acid glutamate with an increase in the concentration of intracellular calcium [Ca2+]i. This effect can also be observed when the compounds L-quisqualic acid (L-QA) or L-(+)-2-amino-4-phosphonobutyric acid (L-AP-4) are used. The effect of L-QA and L-AP-4, both agonists for metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs), can be abolished by the antagonist of group I mGluRs, (RS)-alpha-methyl-4-carboxyphenylglycine. Evolutionary conservation and function of the human embryonic stem cell specific miR-302/367 cluster

miRNA clusters define a group of related miRNAs closely localized in the genome with an evolution that remains poorly understood. The miR-302/367 cluster represents a single polycistronic transcript that produces five precursor miRNAs. The cluster is highly expressed and essential for maintenance of human embryonic stem cells. We found the cluster to be highly conserved and present in most mammals. In primates, seed sequence and miRNA structure are conserved, but inter-precursor sequences are evolving. It is established that sponges, the phylogenetically oldest still extant phylum of Metazoa, possess key molecules of the apoptotic pathways, that is members from the Bcl-2 family and a pro-apoptotic molecule with death domains. Here we report on transfection studies of human cells with a sponge gene, GCBHP2. Sponge tissue was exposed to heat shock and tributyltin, which caused an upregulation of gene expression of GCBHP2. Pythium burgundicum sp. nov. isolated from soil samples taken in French vineyards.

During the course of investigation on pythiaceous fungi occurring in the Burgundian vineyards, a new species of Pythium has been isolated. This oomycete is characterized by its nonproliferating and nonsporulating, spherical to cylindrical type of sporangia (hyphal bodies) germinating through germ tubes, smooth-walled oogonia that are supplied with hypogynous, monoclinous or rarely diclinous antheridia, and smooth-walled oospores.
