Extending the Transactional View on Public–Private Partnership Projects: Role of Relational and Motivational Aspects in Goal Alignment

2019

AbstractIn public–private partnerships (PPPs), aligning the goals of the public sector with those of the private contractor is usually achieved using incentives informed by agency theory. However, ...

Modular Breath Analyzer (MBA): Introduction of a Breath Analyzer Platform Based on an Innovative and Unique, Modular eNose Concept for Breath Diagnos…

2021

Exhaled breath analysis for early disease detection may provide a convenient method for painless and non-invasive diagnosis. In this work, a novel, compact and easy-to-use breath analyzer platform with a modular sensing chamber and direct breath sampling unit is presented. The developed analyzer system comprises a compact, low volume, temperature-controlled sensing chamber in three modules that can host any type of resistive gas sensor arrays. Furthermore, in this study three modular breath analyzers are explicitly tested for reproducibility in a real-life breath analysis experiment with several calibration transfer (CT) techniques using transfer samples from the experiment. The experiment …

Enterprise Architecture Descriptions for Enhancing Local Government Transformation and Coherency Management

2011

Local governments cover multiple service sectors and are typically organized into diversified, deeply hierarchical organizations. Public services offered are tangible, mostly non-IT-critical, and heavily dependent on human resources. Information management is mainly manual in strategy and management processes. In this case study of a large Finnish local government organization, enterprise architecture (EA) is proposed as a tool for improving the coherency of the local government and its alignment to IT and other resources. We ask, what kind of EA descriptions local government agencies need for coherency management, and how to organize them. We apply action design research principles at the …

Photoswitchable Smectic Liquid-Crystalline Elastomers

2005

We succeeded in the synthesis of azo side chain containing polysioxanes with broad smectic C* and A phases. In these polymers the phase transition temperatures can be shifted reversibly by up to 17°C by irradiation with UV (cis) or VIS (trans) light. Thin films of these polymers in the smectie phase (both on substrates and as free-standing films) orient perfectly in a homeotropic manner. As a consequence, the aze chromophores do no longer absorb during a perpendicular illumination with light (dichroism). It is thus possible to crosslink these films photochemically to prepare photoswitchable smectic LC elastomers.

Freely-Suspended and Transferred Freely-Suspended Films of Polymeric Liquid Crystals

1993

Freely-suspended (FS) liquid-crystal (LC) films of a polymethylsiloxane homo- and a copolymer with different mesogenic side groups have been prepared and investigated. For both substances the preparation of the films succeeded only in the isotropic phase but the higher ordered phases were reached after cooling. The films of the homopolymer have only been obtained with thicknesses estimated to be in the pm-range and with an unusual “Book-Shelf” orientation of the smectic layers. In contrast, the films of the copolymer were thinner and showed a homeotropic orientation of the mesogens in the smectic A phase. Interestingly, this material exhibited a different layer spacing in film and bulk, alt…

Structure and dynamics of thin polymer films: a case study with the bond-fluctuation model

2002

Abstract This paper reports Monte Carlo simulation results of a polymer melt of short, non-entangled chains which are embedded between two impenetrable walls. The melt is simulated by the bond-fluctuation lattice model under athermal conditions, i.e. only excluded volume interactions between the monomers and between the monomers and the walls are taken into account. In the simulations, the wall separation is varied from about one to about 15 times the bulk radius of gyration R g . The confinement influences both static and dynamic properties of the films: Chains close to the walls preferentially orient parallel to it. This parallel orientation decays with increasing distances from the wall …

ALIGNEMENT UNI ET TRIDIMENSIONNEL DE MOLÉCULES PAR IMPULSION LASER FEMTOSECONDE

2007

This thesis is devoted to the study of the alignment of linear and asymmetric top molecules generated by an intense laser pulse. In the case of short pulses with respect to molecular rotation, periodic alignment appears in field-free conditions after the extinction of the field. We study theoretically and experimentally the effects of intensity, temperature and polarization of the electric field on produced alignment. If the field is linearly polarized, the interaction leads to the alignment of the most polarizable axis of the molecule. If the field is elliptically polarized, the pulse can generate a simultaneous alignment of the three principal axes of inertia of an asymmetric top molecule…

HOWERD: A Hidden Markov Model for Automatic OWL-ERD Alignment

2016

The HOWERD model for estimating the most likely alignment between an OWL ontology and an Entity Relation Diagram (ERD) is presented. Automatic alignment between relational schema and ontology represents a big challenge in Semantic Web research due to the different expressiveness of these representations. A relational schema is less expressive than the ontology; this is a non trivial problem when accessing data via an ontology and for ontology storing by means of a relational schema. Existent alignment methodologies fail in loosing some contents of the involved representations because the ontology captures more semantic information, and several elements are left unaligned. HOWERD relies on a…

Nonlinear Time-Series Adaptation for Land Cover Classification

2017

Automatic land cover classification from satellite image time series is of paramount relevance to assess vegetation and crop status, with important implications in agriculture, biofuels, and food. However, due to the high cost and human resources needed to characterize and classify land cover through field campaigns, a recurrent limiting factor is the lack of available labeled data. On top of this, the biophysical–geophysical variables exhibit particular temporal structures that need to be exploited. Land cover classification based on image time series is very complex because of the data manifold distortions through time. We propose the use of the kernel manifold alignment (KEMA) method for…

Type II keratin cDNAs from the rainbow trout: implications for keratin evolution.

2002

From a teleost fish, the rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss, we have cloned and sequenced cDNAs encoding five different type II keratins. The corresponding protein spots, as separated by 2D-PAGE of trout cytoskeletal preparations, have been identified by peptide mass mapping using MALDI mass spectrometry. Three of the sequenced keratins are expressed in the epidermis (subtype IIe), and two in simple epithelia and mesenchymal cells (subtype IIs). The IIs keratins are both orthologs of human K8. This leaves unsequenced only the trace component S3 of the biochemically established trout keratin catalog. A phylogenetic tree has been constructed from a multiple alignment of the rod domains of the …
