A remark on two notions of flatness for sets in the Euclidean space
2021
In this note we compare two ways of measuring the $n$-dimensional "flatness" of a set $S\subset \mathbb{R}^d$, where $n\in \mathbb{N}$ and $d>n$. The first one is to consider the classical Reifenberg-flat numbers $\alpha(x,r)$ ($x \in S$, $r>0$), which measure the minimal scaling-invariant Hausdorff distances in $B_r(x)$ between $S$ and $n$-dimensional affine subspaces of $\mathbb{R}^d$. The second is an `intrinsic' approach in which we view the same set $S$ as a metric space (endowed with the induced Euclidean distance). Then we consider numbers ${\sf a}(x,r)$'s, that are the scaling-invariant Gromov-Hausdorff distances between balls centered at $x$ of radius $r$ in $S$ and the $n$-dimensi…

All-Possible-Couplings Approach to Measuring Probabilistic Context
2013
From behavioral sciences to biology to quantum mechanics, one encounters situations where (i) a system outputs several random variables in response to several inputs, (ii) for each of these responses only some of the inputs may ‘‘directly’’ influence them, but (iii) other inputs provide a ‘‘context’’ for this response by influencing its probabilistic relations to other responses. These contextual influences are very different, say, in classical kinetic theory and in the entanglement paradigm of quantum mechanics, which are traditionally interpreted as representing different forms of physical determinism. One can mathematically construct systems with other types of contextuality, whether or …
Event-related potentials to unattended changes in facial expressions: detection of regularity violations or encoding of emotions?
2013
Visual mismatch negativity (vMMN), a component in event-related potentials (ERPs), can be elicited when rarely presented “deviant” facial expressions violate regularity formed by repeated “standard” faces. vMMN is observed as differential ERPs elicited between the deviant and standard faces. It is not clear, however, whether differential ERPs to rare emotional faces interspersed with repeated neutral ones reflect true vMMN (i.e., detection of regularity violation) or merely encoding of the emotional content in the faces. Furthermore, a face-sensitive N170 response, which reflects structural encoding of facial features, can be modulated by emotional expressions. Owing to its similar latency …

Maahanmuutto ja monikulttuurisuus eduskuntapuolueiden maahanmuuttopolitiikoissa : kategoria-analyysi puolueiden maahanmuuttopoliittisista ohjelmista
2016
Tämän pro gradu- tutkielman tavoitteena on selvittää Suomen eduskuntapuolueiden näkökulmia muuttoliikkeisiin sekä monikulttuurisuuteen. Tutkimus sijoittuu aikaan, jossa maahanmuutto on noussut useiden länsimaisten yhteiskuntien poliittisen keskustelun ytimeen ja kriittiset äänet ovat saaneet yhä enemmän tilaa politiikassa. Tutkimus on toteutettu etnometodologisviritteisen kategoria-analyysin avulla. Tutkimusaineisto koostuu kahdeksasta vuosina 2008 – 2015 laadituista eduskuntapuolueen maahanmuuttopoliittisesta ohjelmasta. Aineisto on luokiteltu määrällisesti eri kategorioihin, jonka jälkeen kunkin puolueen kategorioista on muodostettu suurempia teemoja. Puolueiden näkökulmia monikulttuurisu…
