Discrete exterior calculus for photonic crystal waveguides

The discrete exterior calculus (DEC) is very promising, though not yet widely used, discretization method for photonic crystal (PC) waveguides. It can be seen as a generalization of the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. The DEC enables efficient time evolution by construction and fits well for nonhomogeneous computational domains and obstacles of curved surfaces. These properties are typically present in applications of PC waveguides that are constructed as periodic structures of inhomogeneities in a computational domain. We present a two-dimensional DEC discretization for PC waveguides and demonstrate it with a selection of numerical experiments typical in the application area. …
Comparison of mechanical properties and composition of magnetron sputter and plasma enhanced atomic layer deposition aluminum nitride films

A comparative study of mechanical properties and elemental and structural composition was made for aluminum nitride thin films deposited with reactive magnetron sputtering and plasma enhanced atomic layer deposition (PEALD). The sputtered films were deposited on Si (100), Mo (110), and Al (111) oriented substrates to study the effect of substrate texture on film properties. For the PEALD trimethylaluminum–ammonia films, the effects of process parameters, such as temperature, bias voltage, and plasma gas (ammonia versus N2/H2), on the AlN properties were studied. The aim of this research is to analyze Kevin J. Vanhoozer’s theory of creative action as a hermeneutical viewpoint in the light of learning and ethical development. The method used in this research is systematic analysis. Vanhoozer’s understanding of action differs strongly from that of Marx and of Dewey. By turning to philosophical hermeneutics he finds a way through Aristotle’s drama theory where creative action is a basis for the Gadamerian horizon, but instead of fusing the horizons Vanhoozer sees it as the viewpoint of Bakhtinian outsider, which in turn provides an opportunity to critique the surrounding culture. Hyperreaaliluvut ovat reaalilukujen joukon laajennus, jossa on olemassa äärettömän pieniä ja suuria lukuja. Hyperreaalilukuja käytetään differentiaali- ja integraalilaskennassa. Metodi on suosittu erityisesti fyysikoiden keskuudessa. Analyysin osa-aluetta, jossa hyödynnetään hyperreaalilukuja, kutsutaan epästandardiksi analyysiksi. Epästandardissa analyysissä käytetään analyysille epästandardeja työkaluja, josta nimi juontuu. Hyperreaalilukujen edut verrattaessa reaalilukuihin tulevat esille epästandardissa analyysissä. A fast Fourier transform based direct solver for the Helmholtz problem

This article is devoted to the efficient numerical solution of the Helmholtz equation in a two‐ or three‐dimensional (2D or 3D) rectangular domain with an absorbing boundary condition (ABC). The Helmholtz problem is discretized by standard bilinear and trilinear finite elements on an orthogonal mesh yielding a separable system of linear equations. The main key to high performance is to employ the fast Fourier transform (FFT) within a fast direct solver to solve the large separable systems. The computational complexity of the proposed FFT‐based direct solver is O(N log N) operations. Märkälujaliimojen määritys pyrolyysi-kaasukromatografi-massaspektrometrillä

Polymeerien, kuten märkälujaliimojen, analysoiminen on ollut nykyisillä menetelmillä erittäin työlästä tai hidasta. Pyrolyysi edustaa kuitenkin menetelmää, jolla esikäsittely ja aika saadaan minimiin. Menetelmässä näyte pilkotaan pienemmiksi yhdisteiksi, jolloin näyte saadaan helpommin analysoitavaan muotoon. Yleisimmin pyrolyysiä käytetään yhdessä kaasukromatografian kanssa. Työn kirjallisessa osassa perehdyttiin yleisimpien märkälujaliimojen valmistukseen, rakenteisiin ja ominaisuuksiin. Kirjallisuuskatsauksessa käytiin myös läpi pyrolyysin periaatteet, sovellukset sekä kartongin ja eräiden märkälujaliimojen pyrolyysituotteet. Lisäksi työssä perehdyttiin typpimäärityksiin.
