Unifying approach to the quantification of bipartite correlations by Bures distance

2014

The notion of distance defined on the set of states of a composite quantum system can be used to quantify total, quantum and classical correlations in a unifying way. We provide new closed formulae for classical and total correlations of two-qubit Bell-diagonal states by considering the Bures distance. Complementing the known corresponding expressions for entanglement and more general quantum correlations, we thus complete the quantitative hierarchy of Bures correlations for Bell-diagonal states. We then explicitly calculate Bures correlations for two relevant families of states: Werner states and rank-2 Bell-diagonal states, highlighting the subadditivity which holds for total correlations…

Bayesian design in queues: An application to aeronautic maintenance

2007

We exploit Bayesian criteria for designing M/M/c//r queueing systems with spares. For illustration of our approach we use a real problem from aeronautic maintenance, where the numbers of repair crews and spare planes must be sufficiently large to meet the necessary operational capacity. Bayesian guarantees for this to happen can be given using predictive or posterior distributions.

Trapping of Continuous-Time Quantum walks on Erdos-Renyi graphs

2011

We consider the coherent exciton transport, modeled by continuous-time quantum walks, on Erd\"{o}s-R\'{e}ny graphs in the presence of a random distribution of traps. The role of trap concentration and of the substrate dilution is deepened showing that, at long times and for intermediate degree of dilution, the survival probability typically decays exponentially with a (average) decay rate which depends non monotonically on the graph connectivity; when the degree of dilution is either very low or very high, stationary states, not affected by traps, get more likely giving rise to a survival probability decaying to a finite value. Both these features constitute a qualitative difference with re…

Heavy-tailed targets and (ab)normal asymptotics in diffusive motion

2010

We investigate temporal behavior of probability density functions (pdfs) of paradigmatic jump-type and continuous processes that, under confining regimes, share common heavy-tailed asymptotic (target) pdfs. Namely, we have shown that under suitable confinement conditions, the ordinary Fokker-Planck equation may generate non-Gaussian heavy-tailed pdfs (like e.g. Cauchy or more general L\'evy stable distribution) in its long time asymptotics. For diffusion-type processes, our main focus is on their transient regimes and specifically the crossover features, when initially infinite number of the pdf moments drops down to a few or none at all. The time-dependence of the variance (if in existence…

GAMLSS for high-variability data: an application to liver fibrosis case

2020

In this paper, we propose management of the problem caused by overdispersed data by applying the generalized additive model for location, scale and shape framework (GAMLSS) as introduced by Rigby and Stasinopoulos (2005). The idea of using a GAMLSS approach for handling our problem comes from the idea of Aitkin (1996) consisting in the use of an EM maximum likelihood estimation algorithm (Dempster, Laird, and Rubin, 1977) to deal with overdispersed generalized linear models (GLM). As in the GLM case, the algorithm is initially derived as a form of Gaussian quadrature assuming a normal mixing distribution. The GAMLSS specification allows the extension of the Aitkin algorithm to probability d…

Engaging universities in social innovation research for understanding sustainability issues

2017

International audience; The paper presents the analysis of a three-stage research conducted by the authors within a social innovation project in collaboration with international master students of Riga Technical University for determining the factors, which motivate people to be involved in the solution of social problems. The authors not only analyse and use the outcomes of the students’ research but also provide feasibility study of using the potential of study research at the university, for implementing serious research projects. Data collection from Africa, Asia, America and Europe was organised jointly by all the students via web-based survey for creating an original data base for the…

Cellular world simulation: A collaborative model for spatial visioning and Territorial Intelligence.

2006

International audience; Urban sprawl is a typical problem that cannot be correctly understood and resolved because it relies on several different fields and concerns different actors. With traditional approaches, the whole process cannot be apprehended. This context partly explains the inefficiency of traditional planners' works, and asks for urban planning considered through the idea of collaborative projects. The CamDeus (Cellular Automata Models to Design Environmental and Urban Systems) project is an operational decision-making software giving cartographic and mathematical solutions in order to harmonize and share data and knowledge among scientists, territorial or administrative techni…

Consistency of Probability Decision Rules and Its Inference in Probability Decision Table

2012

In most synthesis evaluation systems and decision-making systems, data are represented by objects and attributes of objects with a degree of belief. Formally, these data can be abstracted by the form (objects; attributes; P), wherePrepresents a kind degree of belief between objects and attributes, such that,Pis a basic probability assignment. In the paper, we provide a kind of probability information system to describe these data and then employ rough sets theory to extract probability decision rules. By extension of Dempster-Shafer evidence theory, we can get probabilities of antecedents and conclusion of probability decision rules. Furthermore, we analyze the consistency of probability de…
