Carboplatin and pegylated liposomal doxorubicin for advanced ovarian cancer. Preliminary activity results of the MITO-2 phase III trial

2008

<i>Background:</i> Based on the efficacy of pegylated liposomal doxorubicin (PLD) in relapsed ovarian cancer, we are conducting a phase III study comparing carboplatin plus either paclitaxel or PLD as first-line therapy in advanced ovarian cancer. Because of limited phase I and II data on PLD plus carboplatin in this setting, we conducted an interim activity analysis. <i>Patients and Methods:</i> Patients with stage 1c-IV epithelial ovarian cancer were randomized to carboplatin AUC 5 plus either paclitaxel 175 mg/m2 or PLD 30 mg/m2 every 3 weeks for 6 cycles. The interim activity analysis was planned according to a single…

Population pharmacokinetic analysis of vancomycin in neonates. A new proposal of initial dosage guideline

2010

WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ABOUT THIS SUBJECT • Vancomycin is a glycopeptide antibiotic commonly used to treat resistant gram-positive infections in neonates. While adult dosing guidelines are generally well established, a lack of consensus for optimal dosing regimens in neonates remains. • The large variance in pharmacokinetic values in premature neonates compared with full-term infants is a major barrier to the development of optimal dosing regimens. Pharmacokinetic values have been reported for vancomycin in neonates. However, the studies have included small groups with differing, clinical conditions, serum sampling times and pharmacokinetic models. There are many proposed neonatal dosing gui…

Ciprofloxacin releasing gellan gum/polydopamine based hydrogels with near infrared activated photothermal properties.

2021

Abstract In this work, with the aim to obtain a wound dressing hydrogel, an amine derivative of gellan gum was crosslinked in the presence of 4arm-polyethylenglycole-vinylsulfone. Through this easy and reproducible chemical procedure, a hydrogel with advanced elastic properties and hydrolytic resistance under physiological conditions was obtained. The incorporation of different quantities of polydopamine in the gelling solutions allows to obtain different hydrogels with marked photothermal properties when irradiated with a laser in the near infrared at 810 nm. The organic nanoparticles, reacting with the amino groups of the polysaccharide derivative, contribute to increase the storage modul…

Antibiotic prophylaxis in antenatal nonrefluxing hydronephrosis, megaureter and ureterocele

2012

Observation is a conservative management option in infants with nonrefluxing hydronephrosis, primary nonrefluxing megaureter and ureterocele diagnosed postnatally following antenatal detection of hydronephrosis. Antibiotic prophylaxis might be a sensible regimen under these circumstances to prevent UTI in this population who are potentially at increased risk. However, studies examining the efficacy of prophylactic antibiotics are sparse in this setting. For each condition, prophylactic policies seem extremely variable, and UTI rates vary widely with comparable rates reported between patients followed on and off antibiotics. Overall, antibiotic prophylaxis seems unnecessary in patients with …

Exposed Subcutaneous Implantable Devices

2015

Background: Implantable venous and electrical devices are prone to exposure and infection. Indications for management are controversial, but—especially if infected—exposed devices are often removed and an additional operation is needed to replace the device, causing a delay in chemotherapy and prolonging healing time. We present our protocol for device salvage, on which limited literature is available. Methods: Between 2007 and 2013, 17 patients were treated (12 venous access ports, 3 cardiac pacemakers, and 2 subcutaneous neural stimulators). Most patients were operated within 7 days from exposure. All patients received only a single perioperative dose of prophylactic antibiotic. In cases …

Attitudes of dental implantologists in Spain to prescribing antibiotics, analgesics and anti-inflammatories in healthy patients

2019

Background The implantologists frequently prescribe antibiotics, analgesics and anti-inflammatories in dental implant surgery. The aims of this study were to evaluate the attitudes of implantologists in Murcia (Spain) to prescribing antibiotics, analgesics and anti-inflammatories in healthy patients during different implant dentistry procedures, and to see how these are influenced by individual dentist’s academic level, professional experience, and ongoing training (attending courses or reading scientific literature on medication use) Material and Methods This cross-sectional study included a total of 200 implantologists from the Murcia area (Spain), who each completed a two-page questionna…

Differential proteomic analysis highlights metabolic strategies associated with balhimycin production in Amycolatopsis balhimycina chemostat cultivat…

2010

Abstract Background Proteomics was recently used to reveal enzymes whose expression is associated with the production of the glycopeptide antibiotic balhimycin in Amycolatopsis balhimycina batch cultivations. Combining chemostat fermentation technology, where cells proliferate with constant parameters in a highly reproducible steady-state, and differential proteomics, the relationships between physiological status and metabolic pathways during antibiotic producing and non-producing conditions could be highlighted. Results Two minimal defined media, one with low Pi (0.6 mM; LP) and proficient glucose (12 g/l) concentrations and the other one with high Pi (1.8 mM) and limiting (6 g/l; LG) glu…
