Limnological aspects of sicilian reservoirs: A comparative, ecosystemic approach
1999
This paper is a report on the state-of-the-art of reservoir limnology in Sicily, the largest island of the Mediterranean Sea. The territory is characterised by a semi-arid climate with a dry and a wet semester occurring in the year. Evaporative losses are strong during the summer and, on an annual basis, they often exceed precipitation. Thus, reservoirs constitute an important water resource for the island to supply drinking water and to provide for agricultural needs in the periods of drought. However, despite their importance, they receive poor attention from the scientific and political communities and in the absence of any environmental policy or suitable territorial planning, their wat…
L'économie matérielle de la France (1830-2015). L'histoire d'un parasite ?
2018
This article explores the long-term dynamics of material use in France over a period of 185 years. It is based on material flow accounts that are perfectly consistent with the standards of Material Flows Analysis at the national economic scale. This work - which covers domestic extraction, imports and exports - is the first long-term study of material flows for France, with annual and national data for most of the period. Our database allows us to study the evolution of French metabolism during the industrialization of the country, together with the increasing dependence on abiotic materials. We highlight a singular metabolic trajectory: that of a state that benefits from successive world-s…
Stepmothers’ constructions and negotiations of belonging
2017
Applying a narrative approach and symbolic interactionist frame of reference, this study examines how Finnish stepmothers in their written narratives construct and negotiate their belonging. Belonging is a relevant concept in this study since it focuses on social interaction and intersubjectivity, and their emotional content. Three types of belonging were identified: (a) restricted belonging, (b) dyadic stepmother–stepchild belonging and (c) the spousal relationship as a focal dyad of belonging. Attainment of belonging may be especially challenging for stepmothers owing to their dependence on the willingness of the biological mother and father to share the emotional dimension of the parent–…
Efektīva arābu valodas apguve mobilajās lietotnēs
2021
Italica (Seville, Spain): use of local marble in Augustan age
2010
This study concerns 51 marble finds made of “Cipollino verde” coming from the ancient city of Italica (north of the modern city of Santiponce, 9 km NW of Seville, Spain), the earliest Roman settlement in Spain, founded in 206 B.C. The aim of this work was to determine their provenance from Greek and Italian quarries or from local quarries worked in the Iberian Peninsula. Thin-section optical microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, bulk rock chemistry and O, C and Sr stable isotope analyses were carried out. Results were compared with literature data on “Cipollino verde” marbles quarried in southern Euboea (Greece), Apuan Alps (Italy), Almería, Extremoz, Seville (Spain) and Évora (Portugal). T…
High frequency data entry: statistical findings at high frequency
2010
We introduce some of the most common types of high-frequency financial data: tick-by-tick data, trade andquote data, order bookdata, andmarket member data. We describe the types of variables that are usually available in the most popular high-frequency financial databases. We discuss the issues related to the handling of these data, including cleaning protocols, timing issues, and issues related to data size. We then briefly consider the issues related to the stylized facts detected in the empirical analysis of high- frequency data. Specifically, we consider (i) the irregular temporal spacing of the events at high frequency and its relevance for the econometric modeling of financial variables, (…
