Detection of events by means of plane wave decomposition analysis and cross-correlation technniques using a circular array of microphones

2013

[EN] This article deals with the study and analysis of room acoustics through a process of sound field decomposition sampled with microphones circular arrays. The spatial characteristics of the sound field inside a room can be meaningfully described by means of microphone array processing techniques. In this context, the set of impulse responses sampled by a microphone array can be seen as an image made of acoustic planewave footprints. Due to the circular geometry of the microphone array, these footprints have a cosine-like shape that can be fully described as a function of the direction of arrival (DOA) of the impinging plane wave.Plane-wave decomposition (PWD) technique using microphone …

A Multisite-Multipollutant Air Quality Index

2013

Abstract In this paper, starting from a multivariate spatio-temporal array, containing air pollution data collected for the main pollutants at different monitoring sites over a 1-year period, a new approach is proposed to get a Multipollutant-Multisite Air Quality Index (AQI) time series. A two steps aggregation, related to space and to pollutants, is considered. For the first aggregation (spatial synthesis) a PCA is performed on data array opportunely rearranged, while the index I2, proposed in Ruggieri and Plaia (2011) , is used for the second aggregation (pollutant synthesis), obtaining the new index I 2 MS . Daily data of four air pollutants from the city of Palermo (Italy) are analyzed…

A predictive function optimization algorithm for multi-spectral skin lesion assessment

2015

The newly introduced Kubelka-Munk Genetic Algorithm (KMGA) is a promising technique used in the assessment of skin lesions. Unfortunately, this method is computationally expensive due to its function inverting process. In the work of this paper, we design a Predictive Function Optimization Algorithm in order to improve the efficiency of KMGA by speeding up its convergence rate. Using this approach, a High-Convergence-Rate KMGA (HCR-KMGA) is implemented onto multi-core processors and FPGA devices respectively. Furthermore, the implementations are optimized using parallel computing techniques. Intensive experiments demonstrate that HCR-KMGA can effectively accelerate KMGA method, while improv…

Comparison between Different Dynamic Reconfigurations of Electrical Connections for partially shaded PV Modules

2018

This paper presents an economical investigation on the benefits related to the employment of reconfiguration systems for photovoltaic plants. More in detail, different structures of reconfigurators are proposed and, in order to evaluate the economical convenience on their installation, the Net Present Value is used as a validation element. Significant results are carried out from the proposed analysis.

Remote, web-based laboratory for Programmable Logic Devices

2009

Abstract This work proposes a web-based laboratory for remotely testing FPGA programs on an evaluation board. Using a web browser, the user can download a device configuration file (previously generated with the FPGA commercial tool) and test it in a real FPGA board located in a remote laboratory at the University facilities. The user can control inputs and check outputs’ state. This preliminary study tries to evaluate the possibilities that can be offered to the user, and the restrictions that might apply. Additionally, it describes the proposed infrastructure (hardware and software) needed to successfully deal with all the interesting features that a remote lab system for programmable log…

Kel1 is a phosphorylation-regulated noise suppressor of the pheromone signaling pathway.

2021

Abstract Mechanisms have evolved that allow cells to detect signals and generate an appropriate response. The accuracy of these responses relies on the ability of cells to discriminate between signal and noise. How cells filter noise in signaling pathways is not well understood. We have analyzed noise suppression in the yeast pheromone signaling pathway. By combining synthetic genetic array screening, mass spectrometry and single-cell time-resolved microscopy, we discovered that the poorly characterized protein Kel1 serves as a major noise suppressor of the pathway. At the molecular level, Kel1 suppresses spontaneous activation of the pheromone response by inhibiting membrane recruitment of…

Berberine inhibits cell growth and mediates caspase-independent cell death in human pancreatic cancer cells.

2010

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most aggressive human malignancies with an increasing incidence worldwide. In addition to the poor survival rates, combinations using gemcitabine as a backbone have failed to show any benefit beyond monotherapy. These facts underscore an urgent need for novel therapeutic options and motivated us to study the effect of berberine on pancreatic cancer cells. Here, we undertook an mRNA-based gene expression profiling study in order to get deeper insight into the molecular targets mediating the growth inhibitory effects of berberine on pancreatic cancer cells compared to normal ones. Twenty-four hours after treatment, berberine showed preferential selectivity towa…

Statechart-based design controllers for FPGA partial reconfiguration

2015

Statechart diagram and UML technique can be a vital part of early conceptual modeling. At the present time there is no much support in hardware design methodologies for reconfiguration features of reprogrammable devices. Authors try to bridge the gap between imprecise UML model and formal HDL description. The key concept in author's proposal is to describe the behavior of the digital controller by statechart diagrams and to map some parts of the behavior into reprogrammable logic by means of group of states which forms sequential automaton. The whole process is illustrated by the example with experimental results.

Extracorporeal shock wave-mediated changes in proliferation, differentiation, and gene expression of human osteoblasts.

2008

The goal of this study was to determine whether cell proliferation, differentiation, and gene expression of primary human osteoblasts (hOB) are influenced by shock wave application (SWA).Osteoblast cultures were isolated from cancellous bone fragments and treated with 500 impulses of energy flux densities of 0.06 mJ/mm, 0.18 mJ/mm, 0.36 mJ/mm, and 0.50 mJ/mm. Twenty-four hours and 96 hours after SWA cell proliferation, alkaline phosphatase activity, and mineralization were analyzed. The global gene expression profiling was determined 96 hours after SWA employing Affymetrix HG-U133A microarrays. After 24 hours, hOB showed a dose-dependent increase in cell proliferation from 68.7% (at 0.06 mJ/…
