The Greenland shark Somniosus microcephalus—Hemoglobins and ligand-binding properties

A large amount of data is currently available on the adaptive mechanisms of polar bony fish hemoglobins, but structural information on those of cartilaginous species is scarce. This study presents the first characterisation of the hemoglobin system of one of the longest-living vertebrate species (392 +/- 120 years), the Arctic shark Somniosus microcephalus. Three major hemoglobins are found in its red blood cells and are made of two copies of the same a globin combined with two copies of three very similar beta subunits. The three hemoglobins show very similar oxygenation and carbonylation properties, which are unaffected by urea, a very important compound in marine elasmobranch physiology.…

Una foto de Lopez ya vista sera ahora reinsertada en otro contexto, duplicada para ser dada nuevamente a la mirada. This paper presents the results of an archaeoastronomical study of the Iberian Iron Age cave-sanctuary of Cueva Santa del Cabriel, near the town of Mira in the province of Cuenca, Castilla-La Mancha, central Spain, together with a review of the latest archaeological and ethnographical data about the site. We found that the cave's 12 m-long access corridor is oriented precisely along the summer solstice sunset, so that the north wall of the main gallery is partially illuminated by sunlight at this time. Although the cave was in use from the Late Chalcolithic, it became an important religious centre in the Iberian period. After an apparent hiatus during the Roman and Islamic occupations, its …

Induction motors are the most commonly used prime-movers in industrial applications. Many induction motors supplied by frequency converters are coupled with a physical angular rotor position/velocity sensor which makes the drive complex and require maintenance. This paper presents a sensorless control structure to avoid using a physical angular rotor position/velocity sensor. The proposed method estimates and control the angular rotor velocity using optimal control theory. The optimal controller used in this paper is based on linear quadratic tracking and the states of the machine are estimated using an extended Kalman filter. Charge breeding time investigations of electron cyclotron resonance charge breeders

To qualify electron cyclotron resonance charge breeders, the method that is traditionally used to evaluate the charge breeding time consists in generating a rising edge of the injected beam current and measuring the time in which the extracted multicharged ion beam reaches 90% of its final current. It is demonstrated in the present paper that charge breeding times can be more accurately measured by injecting short pulses of 1 + ions and recording the time resolved responses of N + ions. This method is used to probe the effect of the 1 + ion accumulation in the plasma known to disturb the buffer gas plasma equilibrium and is a step further in understanding the large discrepancies reported in…
