From Historical Silk Fabrics to Their Interactive Virtual Representation and 3D Printing

2020

The documentation, dissemination, and enhancement of Cultural Heritage is of great relevance. To that end, technological tools and interactive solutions (e.g., 3D models) have become increasingly popular. Historical silk fabrics are nearly flat objects, very fragile and with complex internal geometries, related to different weaving techniques and types of yarns. These characteristics make it difficult to properly document them, at the yarn level, with current technologies. In this paper, we bring a new methodology to virtually represent such heritage and produce 3D printouts, also making it highly interactive through the tool Virtual Loom. Our work involves sustainability from different per…

2020

The Nineteenth-Century rediscovery of the Oratory of S. Giorgio offers the opportunity to question the conservation methods, historical analysis and creative reception of fourteenth-century painting in this crucial period for the establishment of art history as a scientific discipline. This essay reconstructs the historical circumstances of the discovery of Altichiero’s frescoes and the consequent discussions among connoisseurs concerning the autography and the cultural value of these paintings. The protagonists of this scholarly discussion – the German art historian Ernst Förster (1800-1885) and his Italian colleague Pietro Selvatico Estense (1803- 1880) – see the Paduan fresco cycle as a …

Virgin and Child sculptures in Buenos Aire’s public collections, 12th to 16th centuries

2016

During the last years, the building process and history of art collections became a prolific field of study in Argentina. However, research on medieval art in private and public collections in our country received little or no attention. But even if medieval art is considerably less represented than modern styles, there is an interesting amount of high quality medieval pieces exhibited at several museums in Argentina. The main purpose of this thesis is therefore to expand our knowledge of the medieval works of art in public Argentine collections, as related to their origin, dating, interpretation, technique and provenance. These pieces show great diversity of styles, provenance and techniqu…

Diverging Collectives: Artist-Run Spaces versus Warehouse Shows Comparative models of art production and cooperation among young British artists

2017

The paper addresses the case of artist-run spaces and warehouse shows in the United Kingdom between the 1980s and 1990s, a time when autonomous group shows and independent artist collectives sprawled particularly thanks to the engagement of a new generation of artists, among whom were found later celebrities such as Damien Hirst and Douglas Gordon. It will be argued that both artist-run spaces and warehouse shows were feasible solutions for young authors against art market barriers and economic crisis, although they held structural and organisational differences that would affect aesthetic outcomes and present art history with a shift in the model of the art collective.
