The standing of the Southern Côte-d’Or in the evolution of the early Iron Age funeral practices in Burgundy and Franche-Comté
2014
This work is a synthesis of tumuli graves in Burgundy and Franche-Comté from Hallstatt C to La Tene B periods. The objective is to characterize the funeral assemblages in Southern Côte-d’Or as well as the influences and the tendencies that went through this area during the early Iron Age. A set of comparisons shows the particularities of the Southern Côte-d’Or at several levels: the recruitment of the populations, the position and orientation of the deceased, the architecture of the graves and their internal arrangements, the typology and positions of the personals items, the nature and locations of the deposits. These various leads allow reconstituting costumes and mortuary practices, as w…
Sedimentology and vertebrate fossils of the Frasnian Ogre Formation, Gurova outcrops, eastern Latvia
2020
Combined sedimentological and palaeontological study of the siliciclastic sequence of the Ogre Formation in the easternmost area of its distribution in Latvia was aimed at the facies analysis of the deposits and at detailed observation of the taxonomical and taphonomical peculiarities of the fossil vertebrate assemblage. Two facies associations, tidally-influenced fluvial channels and lateral tidal bars, have been identified in exposures along the Gurova River. Sedimentological evidences suggest that the studied deposits were formed in the fluvial environment with strong tidal influence. The sedimentary concentrations of vertebrate remains, dominated by the antiarch Bothriolepis maxima, por…
Nuevas aportaciones sobre el aprovechamiento faunístico y vegetal en el Castell de Castalla (Alicante, España) durante los siglos XI-XV
2017
Remains of fauna, charcoal and timber from Castalla Castle (Alicante) have been studied between 2010 and 2016, within the Castalla Castle Heritage Site Social Regeneration Project. Their analysis has helped to better understand the fortification, as well as the exploitation of those resources made by people who lived there during the Middle Ages. In this regard, the faunal assemblage shows the practice of a traditional husbandry model in which herds of goats and sheep are highlighted. Other domestic animals with a less important number, as the pig, complete a panoramic view of the agricultural economy at that time. In terms of hunting resources, red deer was recovered. On the other hand, it…

Distribution of recent ostracods in inland waters of Sicily (Southern Italy)
2006
From 2003 to 2005, freshwater ostracods were sampled in 67 water bodies of mainland Sicily (Provinces of Agrigento, Caltanisetta, Catania, Enna, Palermo, Messina, Ragusa, Siracusa and Trapani) located from sea level up to 1300 m a.s.l. This survey took into account streams, springs, wells, but especially temporary and ephemeral habitats (e.g., flooded meadows, temporary ponds). The aim of this research was to give the first comprehensive picture of the regional ostracod fauna and establish relationships between the distribution of ostracod species and some habitat features. Altogether, 21 ostracod taxa belonging to five families (Candonidae, Ilyocyprididae, Cyprididae, Notodromadidae, and L…
Temperature effects explain continental scale distribution of cyanobacterial toxins
2018
Insight into how environmental change determines the production and distribution of cyanobacterial toxins is necessary for risk assessment. Management guidelines currently focus on hepatotoxins (microcystins). Increasing attention is given to other classes, such as neurotoxins (e.g., anatoxin-a) and cytotoxins (e.g., cylindrospermopsin) due to their potency. Most studies examine the relationship between individual toxin variants and environmental factors, such as nutrients, temperature and light. In summer 2015, we collected samples across Europe to investigate the effect of nutrient and temperature gradients on the variability of toxin production at a continental scale. Direct and indirect…

Phylogenetic diversity and affiliation of tropical African ectomycorrhizal fungi
2022
Ectomycorrhizal fungi form a mutualistic symbiosis with plant roots, and are key for nutrient cycling in many ecosystems. Here we study the ectomycorrhizal fungal communities in the Oueme Superieur reserve forest in Benin (West Africa). We use phylogenetic methods to test if the species from the study site are closer to other tropical African species than to species from other regions. The Oueme Superieur community was represented by nine Operational Taxonomic Units in Amanitaceae, one in Boletaceae, one in Cantharellaceae, one in Cortinariaceae, two in Inocybaceae, fourteen in Russulaceae and three in Sclerodermataceae. Of these thirty-one Operational Taxonomic Units, twenty had no record …
Material Change : The Case of Co-located Schools
2022
AbstractIn this chapter, our context is a co-located Swedish and Finnish medium high school campus. From a posthumanist viewpoint, we study the roles and functions of language(s) in the semiotic assemblages of learning environments and ask how language(s) feature as an integral and material part of the change in the spatial repertoire of learning environments. We investigate how the principle of separation of schools by medium of instruction, typical for Finnish education, becomes undermined through a new multilingual soundscape in the co-located schools, where the school community hears and uses many languages every day. In doing this, the co-located schools not only challenge Finnish lang…
