Abstract The availability of a high flux neutron source for testing candidate materials under irradiation conditions, which will be typically encountered in future fusion power reactors (ITER, DEMO, FPR), is a fundamental step towards the development of fusion energy. Curcumin and trans-resveratrol exert cell cycle-dependent radioprotective or radiosensitizing effects as elucidated by the PCC and G2-assay

Curcumin and trans-resveratrol are well-known antioxidant polyphenols with radiomodulatory properties, radioprotecting non-cancerous cells while radiosensitizing tumor cells. This dual action may be the result of their radical scavenging properties and their effects on cell-cycle checkpoints that are activated in response to radiation-induced chromosomal damage. It could be also caused by their effect on regulatory pathways with impact on detoxification enzymes, the up-regulation of endogenous protective systems, and cell-cycle-dependent processes of DNA damage. Insights into the anion effect on the self assembly of perylene bisimide diimidazolium salts

Abstract We studied how changing the anion affects the self-assembly of three diimidazolium salts bearing a perylene bisimide spacer. In particular we used [BF 4 − ] and [NTf 2 − ] based salts together with a mixed salt bearing both [I − ] and [BF 4 − ] anions. Thermal as well as concentration and temperature dependent spectroscopic investigations revealed that changing the anion impacts on solid state and solution aggregation, leading to articulate thermotropic behaviors and contrasting solvent effects, respectively. Word assembly through minimal forbidden words

AbstractWe give a linear-time algorithm to reconstruct a finite word w over a finite alphabet A of constant size starting from a finite set of factors of w verifying a suitable hypothesis. We use combinatorics techniques based on the minimal forbidden words, which have been introduced in previous papers. This improves a previous algorithm which worked under the assumption of stronger hypothesis.

Dominant-negative FADD rescues the in vivo fitness of a cytomegalovirus lacking an anti-apoptotic viral gene

ABSTRACT Genes that inhibit apoptosis have been described for many DNA viruses. Herpesviruses often contain even more than one gene to control cell death. Apoptosis inhibition by viral genes is postulated to contribute to viral fitness, although a formal proof is pending. To address this question, we studied the mouse cytomegalovirus (MCMV) protein M36, which binds to caspase-8 and blocks death receptor-induced apoptosis. The growth of MCMV recombinants lacking M36 (ΔM36) was attenuated in vitro and in vivo. Amlodipine-induced gingival hyperplasia

Drug-induced gingival hyperplasia is a serious concern both for the patient and the clinician. A 45 year-old Caucasian male patient with hypertension, who received amlodipine (10 mg/day, single dose orally) for two months, sought medical attention because of the new-onset gingival enlargement. On clinical examination a generalized and firm overgrowth of the gingival throughout the maxilla and the mandible were evident.
