Civilization and sexual abuse: selected Indian captivity narratives and the Native American boarding-school experience

2019

This paper offers a contrastive analysis of Indian captivity narratives and the Native American boarding-school experience. Indian captivity narratives describe the ordeals of white women and men, kidnapped by Indians, who were separated from their families and subsequently lived months or even years with Indian tribes. The Native American boarding-school experience, which began in the late nineteenth century, took thousands of Indian children from their parents for the purpose of “assimilation to civilization” to be facilitated through governmental schools, thereby creating a captivity of a different sort. Through an examination of these two different types of narratives, this paper reveal…

A hardware skin-segmentation IP for vision based smart ADAS through an FPGA prototyping

2017

International audience; In this paper we presents a platform based design approach for fast HW/SW embedded smart Advanced Driver Assistant System (ADAS) design and prototyping. Then, we share our experience in designing and prototyping a HW/SW vision based smart embedded system as an ADAS that helps to increase the safety of car's drivers. We present a physical prototype of the vision ADAS based on a Zynq FPGA. The system detects the fatigue state of the driver by monitoring the eyes closure and generates a real-time alert. A new HW/SW codesign skin segmentation step to locate the eyes/face is proposed. Our presented new approach migrates the skin segmentation step from processing system (S…

Career development and transitions of athletes : the International Society of Sport Psychology Position Stand Revisited

2020

This paper is a comprehensive update of the International Society of Sport Psychology (ISSP) Position Stand on career development and transitions of athletes issued a decade ago (Stambulova, Alfermann, Statler, & Côté, 2009, ISSP Position Stand: Career development and transitions of athletes. International Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology, 7, 395–412.). A need for updating the 2009 Position Stand has grown out of the increasing inconsistency between its popularity and high citation, on the one hand, and its dated content that inadequately reflects the current status of athlete career research and assistance, on the other. During the last decade, sport psychology career scholars work…

A novel synthetic approach to pyran-2,4-dione scaffold production: Microwave-assisted dimerization, cyclization, and expeditious regioselective conve…

2020

Abstract Here, we report a novel, green, simple, low-cost, and rapid methodology for the high-yield production of pyran-2,4-dione scaffolds under microwave irradiation. Regio- and stereoselective conversions of β-diketone systems into β-enaminones were achieved using 18 primary amines and four amino acid esters. Microwave-assisted further cyclization of 3-(β-substitutedvinyl)-6-phenyl-pyran-2,4-dione into 3-benzoyl-4,7-diphenyl-2H,5H-pyrano[4,3-b]pyran-2,5-dione via reaction with ethyl benzoyl acetate.

Effects of ultrasound-assisted extraction on physicochemical properties, bioactive compounds, and antioxidant capacity for the valorization of hybrid…

2021

Samples of tree hybrid mandarins (´Clemenvilla`, ´Ortanique` and ´Nadorcott`) were employed to determine the physicochemical properties (increase of conductivity, brix° and pH), bioactive compounds (total phenolic, flavonoid, ascorbic acid and carotenoids content) and antioxidant capacity (DPPH and TEAC) of peels. Mandarin peel extracts were prepared employing ultrasound assisted extraction (400 W, 80% v/v duty cycle, 40ºC). The results were compared to the values of control extraction method. Aqueous ethanol solution (50%, v/v) was used as solvent in solid-liquid ratio of 1:10 (w/v). A 5, 15 and 30 min were applied in both methods to stablish the most effective extraction time. The increas…

C4-dicarboxylate metabolons: Interaction of C4-dicarboxylate transporters of Escherichia coli with cytosolic enzymes

2021

AbstractMetabolons represent the structural organization of proteins for metabolic or regulatory pathways. Here the interaction of enzymes fumarase FumB and aspartase AspA with the C4-DC transporters DcuA and DcuB of Escherichia coli was tested by a bacterial two-hybrid (BACTH) assay in situ, or by co-chromatography (mSPINE). DcuB interacted strongly with FumB and AspA, and DcuA with AspA. The fumB-dcuB and the dcuA-aspA genes encoding the respective proteins are known for their colocalization on the genome and the production of co-transcripts. The data consistently suggest the formation of DcuB/FumB, DcuB/AspA and DcuA/AspA metabolons in fumarate respiration for the uptake of L-malate, or …

HACANCOi : a new Hα-detected experiment for backbone resonance assignment of intrinsically disordered proteins

2020

AbstractUnidirectional coherence transfer is highly efficient in intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs). Their elevated ps-ns timescale dynamics ensures long transverse (T2) relaxation times allowing sophisticated coherence transfer pathway selection in comparison to folded proteins. 1Hα-detection ensures non-susceptibility to chemical exchange with the solvent and enables chemical shift assignment of consecutive proline residues, typically abundant in IDPs. However, many IDPs undergo a disorder-to-order transition upon interaction with their target protein, which leads to the loss of the favorable relaxation properties. Long coherence transfer routes now result in prohibitively large dec…

The Effect of Bialaphos on Ammonium-Assimilation and Photosynthesis I. Effect on the Enzymes of Ammonium-Assimilation

1989

Abstract In this investigation, the effect of bialaphos (phosphinothricyl-alanyl-alanine) on the enzymes involved in NH4 +-assimilation - glutamine synthetase, glutamine-2-oxoglutarate aminotransferase, glutamate dehydrogenase - is examined and compared to the effect of phosphinothricin (glufosinate) on the same enzymes. Bialaphos was given to whole plants (in vivo) and to leaf homogenate (in vitro). The investigation showed that bialaphos has an inhibiting effect on glutamine synthetase in vivo, but not in vitro. In contrast to this, phosphinothricin inhibits glutamine synthetase in vitro as well as in vivo. It was found that bialaphos, similar to phosphinothricin, does not inhibit glutami…
