Everything is Digital Design: When Communication Becomes Spectacle

Redrawing the city and its historical transformations: two examples in Palermo
2015
The representation area is nowaday called upon to face new challenges for new computer technologies that have developed over the last few years. Visual communication and multimedia language experienced a radical change: representation and visualization, thought and image are based on the branch of communication and therefore on the trasmission of knowledge that cannot be separated from the interdisciplinarity. Digital imagery challenges more and more analog imagery, creating a scene that is independent from the constructed reality and sometimes reaching to overlap and merge with it: therefore the representation is no longer just a repetition of the real, but becomes itself an autonomous rea…
Hulot's Selinunte: digital analysis and virtual reconstruction
2021
Some drawings feature a powerful evocative nature, capable of presenting a truthful vision that can replace, in collective imagination, the actual expression of reality. This is the case of the "restorations" of Selinunte proposed by the French architect Jean-Louis Hulot (Paris 1871 -1959) which still today evoke the splendours of the ancient city. Thanks to his accurate surveys and inspired by the visit to the remains of further ancient cities such as Priene, Tera, Delos, and Pompeii, Hulot proposed in his watercolour drawings a vision of a "living" city, rendered at the height of its architectural and social magnificence. The paper presents a study on digital solutions that combine data f…
New metric products, movies, and 3D models from old stereopairs and their application to the in situ palaeontological site of Ambrona
2020
3D modelling tools from photographic pictures have experienced significant improvements in the last years. One of the most outstanding changes is the spread of the photogrammetric systems based on algorithms referred to as Structure from Motion (SfM) in contrast with the traditional stereoscopic pairs. Nevertheless, the availability of important collections of stereoscopic registers collected during past decades invites us to explore the possibilities for re-using these photographs in order to generate new multimedia products, especially due to the fact that many of the documented elements have been largely altered or even disappeared. This article analyses an example of application to the …
e-Health and the Internet of Things. Definitions, applications, regulation, actors. Roadmap to a use cases research.
2015
This reports deals with the electronic health (e-Health) as a prism to study the Internet of Things. After having provided the necessary definitions and having described applications, regulators, regulations and actors both in the UK, in the US and in the EU, the author sets the basis for a use cases research regarding the e-prescribing.
3D DIGITAL MODELS FOR A WIDESPREAD MUSEUM: THE RENON’S “BAUERNHÖFE”
2019
Abstract. The aim of the paper is to study the characteristics of different 3D digital models (point clouds, mesh, CSG, BIM) for the realization of a museum of historical buildings widespread in the territory of South Tyrol through the 3D modeling of several farmhouses between the towns of Collalbo, Longomoso and Siffiano, in the Renon area. Therefore, moving from a defined case study, the paper proposes a workflow for model choice, use, and sharing considering also users profile. The objective is to create a system that allows, the sharing, both on site and remotely, of farmhouses digital models, information, images and documents found during the research. The purpose is to enhance the terr…

A Navigation and Augmented Reality System for Visually Impaired People
2021
In recent years, we have assisted with an impressive advance in augmented reality systems and computer vision algorithms, based on image processing and artificial intelligence. Thanks to these technologies, mainstream smartphones are able to estimate their own motion in 3D space with high accuracy. In this paper, we exploit such technologies to support the autonomous mobility of people with visual disabilities, identifying pre-defined virtual paths and providing context information, reducing the distance between the digital and real worlds. In particular, we present ARIANNA+, an extension of ARIANNA, a system explicitly designed for visually impaired people for indoor and outdoor localizati…
Rewilding Language Education: Emergent Assemblages and Entangled Actions
2021
Integrating concepts and techniques from ethnomethodology and sociomaterialism, this article investigates the observable material processes involving human action and place‐based contexts of language use enabled by locative media. The focal pedagogical intervention utilized mobile augmented reality (AR) activities, the development of which was inspired by research on learning ‘in the wild.’ Applying the principle of reverse engineering, we introduce a pedagogical approach termed ‘rewilding’ for its emphasis on designing supportive conditions for goal‐directed interaction outside of classrooms. Three instances of AR materials use are presented from an out‐of‐class activity associated with un…
