The myth of cognitive agency: subpersonal thinking as a cyclically recurring loss of mental autonomy

2013

This metatheoretical paper investigates mind wandering from the perspective of philosophy of mind. It has two central claims. The first is that, on a conceptual level, mind wandering can be fruitfully described as a specific form of mental autonomy loss. The second is that, given empirical constraints, most of what we call “conscious thought” is better analyzed as a subpersonal process that more often than not lacks crucial properties traditionally taken to be the hallmark of personal-level cognition - such as mental agency, explicit, consciously experienced goal-directedness, or availability for veto control. I claim that for roughly two thirds of our conscious life-time we do not possess …

Young University Students’ Academic Self-Regulation Profiles and Their Associated Procrastination: Autonomous Functioning Requires Self-Regulated Ope…

2020

Students' autonomous self-regulation requires not only self-motivation but also volition or transforming motivation into specific behavioral intentions and following through. Self-regulation includes self-motivation (i.e., goal setting, learning from mistakes) and volitional regulation (i.e., strategic decision making). Furthermore, individual differences, like trait-level perseverance, significantly influence both motivation and volition. Procrastination has been defined as a volitional self-regulation problem, which involves delaying what one had intended to do, in spite of being motivated, and regardless of anticipating adverse consequences. Thus, it is a tendency toward dysregulated beh…

Procesos de autonomia normativa entre perfiles de indipendencia e interdependencia funcional

2010

The author says that to get rules technique and the certainty of the law together is quite a postulate. The certainty of rules is the expression of impartiality and guarantee which should be assured by the "fixity" of the law.Neverthless one can point out the insufficinet reconnaissance of the rules seen as pure written record, that is the "liturgic text" to individuate the real content of the law. The author gives variegated exemplifications about it. Viceversa the rule exists because it is "alive", and in it is its effective vitality. So it exists in the semantics and in the jurisdictional control and in its applicability. After all, the matter of law is a matter of fact. The specific fac…

From South to North? Mobility of Southern Italian Students at the Transition from the First to the Second Level University Degree

2018

In the last decades, the Italian University System has encountered several structural reforms aimed at making it more internationally competitive. Among them, the introduction of the University financial autonomy has triggered an “internal” competition among Universities to attract students from the entire country. Students’ enrollment at the first level has decreased significantly especially after the economic crisis of 2008, while the students’ migration from the South to the Central and Northern regions of the country has increased. These phenomena have created further inequalities within the country and a cultural and socio-economic loss for the South that does not appear to slow down. …

Applying the integrated trans-contextual model to mathematics activities in the classroom and homework behavior and attainment

2016

The aim of the present study was to test hypotheses of the trans-contextual model. We predicted relations between perceived autonomy support, autonomous motivation toward mathematics learning activities in an educational context, autonomous motivation toward mathematics homework in an out-of-school context, social-cognitive variables and intentions for future engagement in mathematics homework, and mathematics homework outcomes. Secondary school students completed measures of perceived autonomy support from teachers and autonomous motivation for in-class mathematics activities; measures of autonomous motivation, social-cognitive variables, and intentions for out-of-school mathematics homewo…

Lastentarhanopettaja lasten autonomian tukijana varhaiskasvatuksessa

2018

Pyrkimys autonomisuuteen on yksi ihmisen psykologisista perustarpeista, joka alkaa kehittyä noin kahdesta ikävuodesta eteenpäin. Autonomiaa on kuitenkin tutkittu empiirisesti hyvin vähän varhaiskasvatuksen kontekstissa. Tutkimustehtävänämme on selvittää, miten lastentarhanopettajat ymmärtävät lapsen autonomian ja mitä pedagogisia keinoja he käyttävät autonomian tukemisessa. Tutkimusaineisto on analysoitu laadullista sisällönanalyysia ja narratiivista analyysia hyö…
