Turning Poland Around The Polish Economy 1990 2009
2011
This article gives a description of the policy pursued by the Polish Government and the National Bank of Poland in the transformation of the Polish economy from a central planning economy to a market economy. There is special focus on the monetary economy, and most focus is laid on the first years of the transformation process. The article also gives a presentation of the development of the main macroeconomic figures for the whole period since the introduction of the new economic system in Poland.
European Banking Union and bank risk disclosure: the effects of the Single Supervisory Mechanism
2022
AbstractThis paper provides evidence on the impact of European Banking Union (BU) and the associated Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM) on the risk disclosure practices of European banks. The onset of BU and the associated rules are considered as an exogenous shock that provides the setting for a natural experiment to analyze the effects of the new supervisory arrangements on bank risk disclosure practices. A Difference-in-Differences approach is adopted, building evidence from the disclosure practices of systemically important banks supervised by the European Central Bank (ECB) and other banks supervised by national regulators over the period 2012–2017. The main findings are that bank risk…
Parallel macro pipelining on the intel SCC many-core computer
2013
In this paper we present how Intel's Single-Chip-Cloud processor behaves for parallel macro pipeline applications. Subsets of the SCC's available cores can be arranged as a pipeline where each core processes one stage of the overall workload. Each of the independent cores processes a small part of a larger task and feeds the following core with new data after it finishes its work. Our case-study is a parallel rendering system which renders successive images and applies different filters on them. On normal graphics adapters this is usually done in multiple cycles, we do this in a single pipeline pass. We show that we can achieve a significant speedup by using multiple parallel pipelines on t…
Recent Advances in Derivation of Functional Hepatocytes from Placental Stem Cells
2013
Abstract: End-stage liver diseases are one of the leading causes of death in the world. Often orthotopic liver transplantation represents the final therapeutic choice. The limits of this approach are the scarcity of donor livers available, and the many side effects related to the administration of immune suppressants to the patients. Cellular therapy for liver diseases is increasingly being viewed as a promising strategy to provide hepatocytes to replenish the parenchymal cells of the organ. This technique suffers of some important limitations, such as the difficulty in isolating sufficient cell numbers (e.g. when adult or foetal hepatocytes are used for transplantation), the limited viabil…
Multiwavelet Frames Originated From Hermite Splines
2015
The chapter presents a method for the construction of multiwavelet frame transform for manipulation of discrete-time signals. The frames are generated by three-channel perfect reconstruction oversampled multifilter banks. The design of the multifilter bank starts from a pair of interpolating multifilters, which originate from the cubic Hermite splines. The remaining multifilters are designed by factoring polyphase matrices. Input to the oversampled analysis multifilter bank is a vector-signal, which is derived from an initial scalar signal by one out of three pre-processing algorithms. The post-processing algorithms convert the vector output from the synthesis multifilter banks into a scala…
Effect of pasteurization on the bactericidal capacity of human milk.
2008
The use of human milk in milk banks requires thermal processing to eliminate microbiological hazards. An evaluation is made of the stability of overall human milk bactericidal capacity following 2 modalities of thermal pasteurization: 63°C/30 minutes and 75°C/15 seconds. Ten milk samples (mature milk) were analyzed. In each sample, the effect of both thermal treatments on bactericidal capacity against Escherichia coli was evaluated in relation to the capacity of fresh milk (control). All the samples analyzed possessed bactericidal capacity. Human milk pasteurization induced a significant loss of this capacity that was more pronounced after high-temperature treatment than after low-temperat…
Identifying a dominant discharge for natural rivers in southern Italy
2012
Abstract Natural rivers are subjected to continuous adjustments in response to any change in the environment. These environmental changes may occur naturally, as in the case of climatic variation or changes in vegetative cover, or may be related to human activities including channelization, damming, bank protection, and bridge construction. Identifying the value of that discharge (‘dominant’ or ‘effective’ discharge, QD) considered responsible for the main changes operated by a river has been a subject of great challenge to scientists and engineers during the last decades. In fact, this threshold value is largely adopted for stream-management decisions, for predicting the stable slope upstr…
The Cyclicality of Bank Credit Losses and Capital Ratios under Expected Loss Model
2023
We model the evolution of stylised bank loan portfolios to assess the impact of IFRS 9 and US GAAP expected loss model (ECL) on the cyclicality of loan loss provisions (LLPs), realised losses and capital ratios of banks, relative to the incurred loss model of IAS 39. We focus on the interaction between the changes in LLPs charges (the flow channel) and stocks (the stock channel) under ECL. Our results show that, when GDP growth doesn’t demonstrate high volatility, ECL model smooths the impact of credit losses on profits and capital resources, reducing the pro-cyclicality of capital and leverage ratios, especially under US GAAP. However, when GDP growth is highly volatile, the large differen…
