Local vs global motions in protein folding
2013
It is of interest to know whether local fluctuations in a polypeptide chain play any role in the mechanism by which the chain folds to the native structure of a protein. This question is addressed by analyzing folding and non-folding trajectories of a protein; as an example, the analysis is applied to the 37-residue triple β-strand WW domain from the Formin binding protein 28 (FBP28) (PDB ID: 1E0L). Molecular dynamics (MD) trajectories were generated with the coarse-grained united-residue force field, and one- and two-dimensional free-energy landscapes (FELs) along the backbone virtual-bond angle θ and backbone virtual-bond-dihedral angle γ of each residue, and principal components, respect…
Effects of environmental factors on seed germination ofAnthyllis barba-jovisL
2008
Abstract The influence of the main environmental factors on seed germination of Anthyllis barba-jovis L. were analysed. This work is part of a broader investigation aimed at the reintroduction of this species on Mount Conero, Ancona (central Italy), where it is at present extinct. The seeds were collected from the Gargano headland (southern Adriatic coast). Experimental analyses were carried out to determine: (i) dormancy levels of seeds collected in successive years, and also collected from the soil seed bank; (ii) effects of usual pre-treatments for overriding the physical dormancy of the seeds; (iii) optimal temperature range for maximum germination; (iv) effects of fire on seed germinat…
Holes in the Dike: The Global Savings Glut, U.S. House Prices and the Long Shadow of Banking Deregulation
2016
We explore empirically how capital inflows into the US and financial deregulation within the United States interacted in driving the run-up (and subsequent decline) in US housing prices over the period 1990-2010. To obtain an ex ante measure of financial liberalization, we focus on the history of interstate-banking deregulation during the 1980s, i.e. prior to the large net capital inflows into the US from China and other emerging economies. Our results suggest a long shadow of deregulation: in states that opened their banking markets to out-of-state banks earlier, house prices were more sensitive to capital inflows. We provide evidence that global imbalances were a major positive funding sh…
Risk Management Era in European Credit Institutions: Predictable Mutation in XXI Century
2014
Abstract In the market economy, globalization, liberalization and diversification of financial markets, fierce competition between the credit institutions and many of the products and services offered by them are the main factors that have exposed the banking sector to new risks, while leading to multiple challenges. For these reasons it is becoming increasingly important both permanent innovation and risk management techniques tools as well as banking performance. Only a pertinent analysis and a very good knowledge of the new tendencies in banking financial risk management can provide credit institutions in Romania efficient options on their use of management, while obtaining a higher prof…
Market Environment Factors Influence on Development of Bancassurance in Latvia
2021
Banks and insurers as part of financial service industry engage in partnership under the concept of Bancassurance. Several studies are done on this topic, focusing on economies of scale and performance of most Bancassurance common models. The purpose of this study is to identify the key market environment factors that influence the development of Bancassurance for retail banks in Latvia and the level of increase. Aim of this research is to analyse – how market environment factors influence the development of Bancassurance in Latvia. The current paper is focused on the Latvian market where several Bancassurance models are present as we test our propositions by interviewing management represe…
Evaluation of Banking Digitization Policy of Romanian Commercial Banks
2018
Nowadays, even in Romania, we faced with process of digitalization of financial system, especially of banking system. Natural person—banks relationships are more and more distant as location, but more and faster as financial transaction results, because of banking digitalization process based on performance of internet era. The paper’s aims are to answer to questions like: Are Romanian past, actual and future generations prepared to be fully integrated in banking digitalization process? Do Romanian natural person understands the usefulness and benefits of digital banking services/? Or, how benefits of Romanian commercial banks are changing? The methodological support includes analyzing empi…
Accounting Meets Economics: Towards an 'Accounting View' of Money
2018
This study lays the foundations of the 'Accounting View' of money. Using international accounting principles, the study argues that state and central bank monies are not debt, and that in fractional reserve regimes only a share of commercial bank money can be regarded as debt. The study determines how the seigniorage associated with the issuance of these monies should be accounted for in the financial statements of the issuing institutions, and examines what this implies for the correct understanding of money. The new view throws light into such issues as the true nature of central bank capital, commercial banks, and digital currencies. Drawing on it, new measurements of seigniorage are der…
Risk management in the banking industry
2016
Money for the Issuer: Liability or Equity?
2021
Abstract This study analyzes the nature of money through the lens of the international principles of accounting and lays the foundations of what it calls the accounting view of money (AVM). Using international accounting principles, the AVM argues that the fiat monies issued by the state (typically, cash, banknotes, and central bank money) are not debt and that in fractional reserve regimes, only a share of commercial bank money can be regarded as debt. The AVM argues, instead, that state monies and the nondebt share of commercial bank money are net wealth of their holders and net worth (equity) of their issuers and determines how the seigniorage associated with money issuance should be acc…
Stability of fatty acids and tocopherols during cold storage of human milk
2012
The stability of fatty acids and tocopherols from human milk from 8 healthy lactating mothers was determined in fresh milk and after cold storage. Refrigeration at 4 °C for 48 h or freezing at −20 °C for 30 days did not significantly decrease fatty acid contents (mg per 100 g human milk), or concentrations of α-, β-, γ- and δ-tocopherol isomers, compared with fresh milk. Results obtained in the present study showed that cold storage under the usual storage conditions in neonatal units, at home or in milk banks did not have a detrimental effect upon fatty acids and tocopherols contents in human milk. Thus, infants can receive stored human milk without losses in the nutritional value of these…
