Towards Computer-based Exams in CS1

Even though IDEs are often a central tool when learning to program in CS1, many teachers still lean on paper-based exams. In this study, we examine the “test mode effect” in CS1 exams using the Rainfall problem. The test mode was two-phased. Half of the participants started working on the problem with pen and paper, while the other half had access to an IDE. After submitting their solution, all students could rework their solution on an IDE. The experiment was repeated twice during subsequent course instances. The results were mixed. This paper re-examines the Finnish evidence presented by Lehtonen and Tykkylainen on the use of location quotients (LQs) in estimating regional input coefficients and multipliers. They argue that the choice of an LQ-based method is a gamble and that there is no single method that can be recommended for general use. It is contended here that this evidence is erroneous and that the FLQ (Flegg's location quotient) yields results far superior to those from competing formulae, so it should provide a satisfactory way of generating an initial set of input coefficients.…

This paper aims to discuss complexity as a key feature for understanding the role of science knowledge in environmental and health contexts—a central issue in Science|Environment|Health pedagogy. Complex systems are, in principle, not predictable. In different contexts, ephemeral mechanisms produce different, sometimes completely unexpected results. The art of decision-making in complex contexts is to take scientific knowledge into account but to interpret its meaning in terms of concrete complex contexts. Beliefs about teaching held by student teachers and school-based teacher educators

Teachers' beliefs about teaching goals and practices are influenced by several factors, including teaching and mentoring experiences. To identify which teaching goals and practices are preferred for the social and cognitive development of pupils, 112 student teachers and 73 school-based teacher educators were questioned. In contrast to teacher educators, student teachers consider the mechanical acquisition of knowledge and practices that support intrapersonal processes directed toward cognitive development to be a more effective goal, while teachers with mentoring experience prefer teaching practices that support pupils' social development. The Synthesis of Quinoline‐based Tin Complexes with Pendant Schiff Bases

Whilst pursuing the synthetic utility of quinoline‐based tin complexes, Me2Sn(Quin‐NO2)2 (1) and Ph2Sn(Quin‐NO2)2 (2) (Quin‐NO2 = 5‐nitroquinolino‐8‐oate) were synthesized bearing coordinatively inert nitro groups. Conventional reduction methodologies successfully converted 1 to Me2Sn(Quin‐NH2)2 (3) and 2 to Ph2Sn(Quin‐NH2)2 (4) (Quin‐NH2 = 5‐aminoquinolino‐8‐oate). The synthetically useful amine groups proved difficult to exploit in the presence of the central tin atom, however, a complete Schiff base functionalized Sn complex of the dimethyltin pro‐ligand Me2Sn(Quin‐py)2 (6) was successfully synthesized from 5‐[(pyridin‐2‐ylmethylene)amino]quinolin‐8‐ol (HQuin‐py; 5) in good yield via an …

An analysis of the names derived from appellatives allows for a reconstruction of the categorization methods of the world, anthropological conceptualization and a popular image of reality.
