In search for the conceptual origin of university students' community in a confluence of on- and offline learning environments ethnographies in techn…
2007
Contemporary society requires its citizens to develop capacities to resituate their activities in collective unities and to successfully communicate their actions within these multiple local and global communities. Also in higher education, educational practices are increasingly fixed around web-based, collaborative learning environments, designed for the values of community and collective learning. The publication presents a study that explored learning communities in technology-rich higher education milieus. The aim was to search for the conceptual origin of university students’ community and its reference point in this context. In this work, methodological tools to study, to analyse, and…
Parental Attitudes toward Videogames at School
2019
Despite research having highlighted the positive outcomes of the use of videogames to learn, their integration into school contexts remains rare. Literature recognizes the importance of user’s technology acceptance to predict the intention to use and the adoption of new technology in several settings. So far, investigations have primarily focused on students’ and teachers’ opinions, while only a few studies have considered the role of parents. This study aimed to investigate the role of the dimensions of the technology acceptance model on parental preference (254 Italian parents) for the adoption of videogames in primary or secondary schools. Results revealed that 71% of the variance of par…
Cyber security exercise : Literature review to pedagogical methodology
2019
This paper is a literature review, where we try to find out pedagogical principles has used in different virtual or simulated industry learning environments. The purpose is to use these findings to create in the future a new model for teaching in cyber security exercises. Cyber security exercises are the major service at JYVSECTEC - Jyväskylä Security Technology, cyber security research, training and development center in Finland [1]. JYVSECTEC Cyber security exercises are executed in real life simulation environment, RGCE (Realistic Global Cyber Environment) [1]. It provides the same functionality as the real Internet, but it is isolated from the real Internet and fully controlled by JYVSE…
Gender differences in theory-based predictors of physical activity in university students with disabilities
2021
Abstract University students with disabilities engage in physical activity to a lesser extent than their able-bodied peers, with women reporting less physical activity than men. The present study aimed to examine gender differences in theory-based predictors of physical activity in this population. Spanish university students with different disabilities (n = 1076) completed measures of the Theory of Planned Behaviour constructs and the reduced Spanish version of the Barriers to Physical Activity Questionnaire for People with Mobility Impairments. Self-efficacy and controllability were significantly lower in women and gender differences on the barriers predicting controllability were obtaine…
De participació local. Una proposta metodològica desde la investigació-acció-participativa
2018
Citizen participation is an increasingly prevalent term in our society. In the process of deployment in the municipal area, progressively local corporations make efforts to innovate practices and develop experiences of citizen participation in defining policies and public affairs, and allocating budgets. While innovation has been advanced with regard to the tools and mechanisms to be used to promote participation, many of the initiatives and experiences have focused more on the implementation of the vote than in the different social processes inherent in the participation. Moreover, we are faced with the absence of a methodological guide that allows approaching a project or strategic plan o…

Finnish L2 proficiency for working life : towards research-based language education and supervision practices
2021
In all Nordic countries, the L2 proficiency needed at work has become a key area in the language education provided for adult immigrants. This paper is part of a series of articles that gives an overview of language policies and research activities in the Nordic countries related to L2 in working life, together with a presentation of novel empirical analyses. Here, the focus is on the Finnish perspective. The aims of this paper are twofold. First, it provides an overall picture of the policies and research findings underlying recent tendencies in Finnish L2 language education in/for working life. After this, the article presents two case studies of clinical supervision practices in health c…
Interactively Learning the Preferences of a Decision Maker in Multi-objective Optimization Utilizing Belief-rules
2020
Many real life problems can be modelled as multiobjective optimization problems. Such problems often consist of multiple conflicting objectives to be optimized simultaneously. Multiple optimal solutions exist to these problems, and a single solution cannot be said to be the best without preferences given by a domain expert. Preferences can be used to find satisfying solutions: optimal solutions, which best match the expert’s preferences. To model the preferences of the expert, and aid him/her in finding satisfying solutions, a novel method is proposed. The method utilizes machine learning combined with belief-rule based systems to adaptively train a belief rule based system to learn a domai…
Business models, small firms, and performance in knowledge-intensive based services. A study in the private health sector
2020
During the last years, and due to social and economic changes, the demand for private health services (PHS) is growing.
