Distribution patterns of amphibians from the Kakamega forest, Kenya

We discuss generalized geographical range patterns for the 24 anuran species that occur in the Kakamega Forest, western Kenya. Eight distributions are distinguished: from "western Equatorial Rift Valley" to almost entire sub-Saharan. The former may be more common than previously assumed, because some species displaying this geographical range pattern were only recently identified out of species complexes with large distributions. In contrast, continuous distributions of species over the Congo basin may be less common than currently understood.

We think that this kind of discussions is very healthy to the Paleontology and it would be necessary to do it more frequently, so that thanks again for your example. It is true that some of the descriptions of ichnofossils in our work need further discussion and comments, but when we analysed several poorly-preserved specimens (such as the so-called Spongeliomorpha isp.) we preferred to make a quick introduction and describe them in open nomenclature. The Calatayud-Teruel Basin is one of the richest areas of Spain, when fossil mammals are concerned. Around the village of Montalban many lower Oligocene fossil mammal localities are known and several upper Oligocene localities with rich micromammal faunas are present between the villages of Vivel del Rio Martin and Martin del Rio. Abstract Fossombronia crozalsii Corb. ( Codoniaceae ) was recently found on the island of Linosa (Pelagian Islands, Sicily). The species is new for the Italian bryological flora, enlarging the area of distribution of this species in the Mediterranean basin. Fossombronia crozalsii was found on volcanic soil associated with other interesting and rare hepatics, in particular Exormotheca pustulosa Mitt. Finally, for both species some ecological and phytogeographical considerations related to their presence in the Mediterranean basin are discussed.

Pesticide monitoring in the basin of Llobregat River (Catalonia, Spain) and comparison with historical data.

Through an extensive sampling in the Llobregat River basin, the presence of 50 currently used pesticides in water, sediment, and biota was assessed. Pesticides were detected primarily in water (up to 56% of the analytes), whereas their presence in sediments was more intermittent, and in biota was scarce. Those at high concentrations in water were the benzimidazoles (carbendazim in 22% of the samples up to 697ngL-1), the organophosphorus (malathion in 54% of the samples up to 320ngL-1), and the ureas (diuron in 54% of the samples up to 159ngL-1). The Sab'atayn Basin is one of the most prolific Mesozoic hydrocarbon basins located in central Yemen. It has many oil producing fields including the Habban Field with oil occurrences in fractured basement rocks. A comprehensive seismic analysis of fractured basement reservoirs was performed to identify the structural pattern and mechanism of hydrocarbon entrapment and reservoir characteristics. The occurrence of 50 currently used pesticides and their transformation products in surface and waste waters, sediment and fish in the Guadalquivir River Basin was determined in 2010 and 2011. After selective sample extraction, pesticides were identified and quantified by liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The contamination profile in water and sediments is marked by the presence of organophosphorus and triazines. Transformation products were even at higher concentrations than parent pesticides. The geology of the Sicilian mainland is summarized by N–S geological sections. A continuous late Cenozoic orogenic belt through central and western Sicily resulted from a complex deformative history, recorded by several tectonic events. The deformation mainly involved the sedimentary cover of the old African continental margin, formed in a large basinal area, bordered at its southern margin by a shallow-water carbonate environment attached to Gondwana.
