Conodont association of the Bashkirian-Moscovian boundary interval of the Donets Basin, Ukraine
2018
Ten sections spanning the Bashkirian-Moscovian boundary interval were studied in the Donets Basin. Six of them contain most representative conodont and foraminifer associations. In this paper we focused on three the most complete sections that include stratigraphically important conodont species, which belong to the Declinognathodus, Idiognathoides, Idiognathodus, Neognathodus, “Streptognathodus”, Mesogondolella and Diplognathodus genera. The majority of those species are widely distributed, which makes the correlation to other areas reliable. Two biotic events in conodont evolution were discovered in these sections. Two conodont lineages established here are considered as potential markers…
The bivalve Glycymeris planicostalis as a high-resolution paleoclimate archive for the Rupelian (Early Oligocene) …
2015
Abstract. Current global warming is likely to result in a unipolar glaciated world with unpredictable repercussions on atmospheric and oceanic circulation patterns. These changes are expected to affect seasonal extremes and the year-to-year variability of seasonality. To better constrain the mode and tempo of the anticipated changes, climatologists require ultra-high-resolution proxy data of time intervals in the past, e.g., the Oligocene, during which boundary conditions were similar to those predicted for the near future. In the present paper, we assess whether such information can be obtained from shells of the long-lived bivalve mollusk Glycymeris planicostalis from the late Rupelian of…
Use of geomorphological units to improve drainage network extraction from a DEM
1999
Abstract Drainage networks are one of the main elements characterizing basins, and network topology and geometry form the basis of many hydrological and geomorphological models ( eg Geomorphological Unitary Hydrograph). The identification and manual delineation of channel networks from maps or aerial photographs requires much time and effort. In the last two decades, algorithms and procedures for automated extraction of drainage networks from digital elevation data have been developed and implemented in many specialized software applications. Nevertheless, automatically delineated channel networks do not always show close agreement with manually delineated networks. This paper describes a c…
Kibaran magmatism and Pan-African granulite metamorphism in northern Mozambique: single zircon ages and regional implications
1997
Abstract Single zircons from granitoid orthogneisses in the foreland of the Lurio Belt of northern' Mozambique were dated by the evaporation method and yielded 207 Pb/ 206 Pb magmatic emplacement ages between 1040.1 ±0.4 and 1148.2±0.4 Ma. These data confirm previous RbSr whole rock and SHRIMP zircon analyses and record a period of magmatic activity corresponding to the Kibaran event of east central Africa. A1300 Ma old zircon xenocryst in one sample suggests the presence of still older crust in the region. Metamorphic zircons from a granulite-facies psammopelitic gneiss of the Mugeba klippe, which is derived tectonically from the Lurio Belt, were dated by evaporation, conventional techniq…
Ca. 750–1100 Ma magmatic events and Grenville-age deformation in Sri Lanka: relevance for Rodinia supercontinent formation and dispersal, and Gondwan…
2003
Abstract Large volumes of ∼880–1100 Ma calc-alkaline granitoid rocks in the Wanni and Vijayan crustal provinces of Sri Lanka make it likely that these domains were produced in active margin settings, probably Grenville-age magmatic arcs. We report new single zircon evaporation ages and Nd isotopic systematics for dioritic to granodioritic gneisses of the Kadugannawa Complex of central Sri Lanka which record a period of magmatic arc activity between 1006 and 881 Ma and show this complex to be part of the Wanni domain. Both provinces were probably generated in arc-related settings at the outer margin of Rodinia, but this cannot be ultimately proven on the basis of the currently available data…
The Argille Varicolori Unit of Lucania (Italy): a record offscraping and gravity sliding in the Mesozoic-Tertiary Lagonegro Basin, southern Apennines
2006
Detailed geological mapping and new stratigraphic and structural data collected in the Lucania area of the southern Apennines allowed us to assess the deformation history of 11 Monte-Corleto Perticara zone, in the High Agri Valley (Lucanian Apennines, southern Italy) where red and green shales (known as Argille Varicolori or Argille scagliose) crop out. Our observations suggest that: (1) 'chaotic' facies within the Argille Varicolori may be attributed to a broken formation generated by overthrusting of Apenninic Platform units onto already deformed Lagonegro basin strata; (2) gravity sliding phenomena at the thrust front enhanced the development of debris flow and the emplacement of olistos…
Climatology of the stability and humidity terms in the Haines Index to improve the estimate of forest fire risk in the Western Mediterranean Basin (V…
2014
The stability and moisture content of the different atmospheric levels are commonly used to assess the risk index in the propagation and evolution of a hypothetical forest fire. The Haines Index (HI) combines these terms to determine the environmental potential for wildfire growth. In this paper the environmental stability and humidity associated with the lower atmospheric layers in the Western Mediterranean Basin are investigated by analysing HI calculations over a 29-year period. The HI climatology can be applied to the study of plume-dominated forest fires. These fires tend to present very erratic propagation behaviour and create highly dangerous situations for fire brigades. Thus the kn…
Terrestrial growth and marine dispersal? Comparative phylogeography of five coastal plant species at a European scale
2005
The phylogeography of five flowering plant species (Cakile maritima, Eryngium maritimum, Salsola kali, Halimione portulacoides, Crithmum maritimum) widespread along the European coasts was investigated across their entireEuropean range using AFLP evidence. Both similarities and dissimilarities were found. All species contain a distinct Black Sea/Aegean Sea cluster, and all except E. maritimum contain a distinct Adriatic Sea cluster or group of genetically very similar clusters. All species except Cr. maritimum contain a distinct Atlantic Ocean/North Sea/Baltic Sea cluster clearly separate from the Mediterranean material. In Ca. maritima a distinct Baltic Sea subcluster was found. In the wes…
Geochemical and sedimentological evidence of productivity cycles recorded in Toarcian black shales from the Belluno Basin, Southern Alps, northern It…
1999
ABSTRACT Organic-carbon-rich black shales cyclically alternating with bioturbated limestones and gray marlstones, which crop out in the Belluno Trough (Southern Alps, Italy), are expression of the early Toarcian anoxic event in the Tethys basin. Sedimentological and geochemical features such as well-developed lamination, common very small ( A negative 13C excursion at the middle part of the studied interval is correlative to maxima in TOC, V/Rb, and Ba/Rb values, identifying, within the Toarcian anoxic event, a stage of more intense bottom-water anoxia coupled with high surface fertility.
