REDESIGN OF AN AUTO-LEVELLING BASE FOR SUBMARINE SEISMIC SENSOR

2011

The OBS (acronym of Ocean Bottom Seismometer) is a system to monitor the submarine seismic activity. To properly work, an OBS system needs a suitable auto-levelling base to maintain a fixed (horizontal) position during the measurement phases. In this work a new auto-levelling base for submarine seismic sensors has been designed. During the redesign process a preliminary phase of analysis of the state of art has been made. Afterwards, the technological solutions chosen by different manufactures have been critically analysed, and a full description of their functionalities, working principles and system performances has been carried out. Later, some innovative concepts have been proposed. Amo…

Coupled Electromechanical Analysis of a Permanent-Magnet Bearing

2017

In this paper we present a new Permanent Magnets (PMs) bearing, which is composed of a rotor capable to levitate at a short distance from a dedicated stator. Proper configurations of PMs arranged on both the stator and the rotor allows having the magnetic suspension. Intrinsic mechanical instability characterizes the device; a passive stabilization is attempted exploiting eddy currents on a conducting sheet that surrounds the magnets on the stator. The system has been simulated by means of a dedicated numerical code that takes into account the effects of magneto-mechanical coupling. The coupled problem has been integrated by means of a prediction-correction nested scheme. Some interesting r…

A new quasi-static multi-degree of freedom tapered roller bearing model to accurately consider non-Hertzian contact pressures in time-domain simulati…

2014

The accuracy of the fatigue life calculations in rolling bearing simulations is highly dependent on the precision of the roller-raceway contact simulations and the ability to accurately include structural deflections of the supporting structure. Several different methods exist to simulate the pressure distributions, and in time-domain bearing simulations, where many contacts need evaluation, the simple and time efficient methods are more popular. These methods underestimate the fatigue life reduction due to roller end effects, overload and misalignments. Furthermore, existing time-domain rolling bearing models assume that the bearing rings remain circular, which can be a poor approximation…

Performances Comparison for a Rotating Shaft Suspended by 4-Axis Radial Active Magnetic Bearings via 𝜇 -Synthesis, Loop-Shaping Design, and Sub ( 𝐻…

2011

The control systems applied on active magnetic bearing are several. A perfect levitation is characterized by maintaining the operating point condition that is characterized by the center of stator coincident with the geometric center of shaft. The first controller implemented for this purpose is PID controller that is characterized by an algorithm that leads the amplifier to produce control current until the operating point condition is not reached, this is obtained by an integration operator. The effect of an integrator is essential but not necessary for a centered levitation for example in the robust control characterized by a dynamic model depended on plant of system so that it depends o…

Applicability of over-coring technique to loaded RC columns

2014

Stress determination is a very important step in the assessment of the safety of existing reinforced concrete structures. In rock mechanic this goal is achieved with the over-coring technique. The main idea behind such a technique is to isolate a material sample from the stress field in the surrounding mass and monitor its re-equilibrium deformation response. If the materials remains elastic, and elastic properties are known, stresses may be obtained from the corresponding measured strains. The goal of this paper is to evaluate if the over-coring technique is applicable to reinforced concrete members. The results of an experimental investigation on the behaviour of compressed concrete colum…

A New Quasi-Static Cylindrical Roller Bearing Model to Accurately Consider Non-Hertzian Contact Pressure in Time Domain Simulations

2012

The accuracy of the fatigue life calculations in rolling bearing simulations is highly dependent on the precision of the roller-raceway contact simulations. Several different methods exist to simulate these pressure distributions and in time domain bearing simulations, where many contacts need evaluation, the simple and time efficient methods are more popular, yielding erroneous life estimates. This paper presents a new six degree of freedom frictionless quasi-static time domain cylindrical roller bearing model that uses high precision elastic half-space theory to simulate the contact pressures. The potentially higher computational demand using the advanced contact calculations is addressed…

A carbon budget model to predict branch carbohydrate deficiencies as a function of water stress and crop load in pistachio (Pistacia veraL.)

2018

The effect of irrigation and crop load on alternate bearing was studied in pistachio tree using a “branch carbon budget model” developed to calculate branch carbohydrate balance. Experiences were conducted in Sicily (37°26’N, 14°03’E, 360 m a.s.l.) on female trees of ‘Bianca’. Two treatments were applied: rainfed (T0) and 100 mm of irrigation (T100). At 29, 44, 65, 86, 103 and 121 DAFB, on one fully expanded leaf selected on three trees per treatment, were monitored leaf gas exchanges. At 15 days interval, three branches treatment-1 were excised and, in the lab, the following parameters were measured: total photosynthetically active leaf surface; number of leaves, fruits, shoot fresh weight…

Experimental and analytical response of masonry elements under eccentric vertical loads

2005

The flexural behaviour of masonry rectangular cross-sections is studied in order to characterize the mechanical behaviour of structural elements under axial eccentric loads by means of a proper law. First the experimental response of walls under vertical centred loads is observed and a stress-strain law depending on two parameters is given in order to fit the experimental results. Subsequently the behaviour of walls nominally equal to the walls mentioned before is investigated under eccentric vertical loads, and the response is observed in terms of moment-curvature relation. To this point a comparison is made between the moment-curvature response obtained experimentally and the moment-curva…

Aluminium distribution in an Earth's non–primitive lower mantle

2020

The aluminium incorporation mechanism of perovskite was explored by means of quantum mechanics in combination with equilibrium/off-equilibrium thermodynamics under the pressure-temperature conditions of the Earth's lower mantle (from 24 to 80 GPa). Earth's lower mantle was modelled as a geochemically non-primitive object because of an enrichment by 3 wt% of recycled crustal material (MORB component). The compositional modelling takes into account both chondrite and pyrolite reference models. The capacity of perovskite to host Al was modelled through an Al2O3 exchange process in an unconstrained Mg-perovskite + Mg-Al-perovskite + free-Al2O3(corundum) system. Aluminium is globally incorporate…

Mesenchymal stem cell proliferation and differentiation on load-bearing trabecular Nitinol scaffolds.

2013

Bone tissue regeneration in load-bearing regions of the body requires high-strength porous scaffolds capable of supporting angiogenesis and osteogenesis. 70% porous Nitinol (NiTi) scaffolds with a regular 3-D architecture resembling trabecular bone were produced from Ni foams using an original reactive vapor infiltration technique. The "trabecular Nitinol" scaffolds possessed a high compressive strength of 79 MPa and high permeability of 6.9×10(-6) cm2. The scaffolds were further modified to produce a near Ni-free surface layer and evaluated in terms of Ni ion release and human mesenchymal stem cell (hMSC) proliferation (AlamarBlue), differentiation (alkaline phosphatase activity, ALP) and …
