INFLUENCE OF UNCERTAINTIES ON ROTATING FLEXIBLE SHAFT SUSPENDED BY 4-AXIS RADIAL ACTIVE MAGNETIC BEARINGS µ-SYNTHESIS AND LOOP-SHAPING-DESIGN

2012

This paper shows a comparison about dynamic behavior of a rotating shaft when it is suspended by 4-axis radial active magnetic bearing system. The active magnetic suspension is obtained by two different controllers which realize the robust stability and robust performance. The control systems used are µ-synthesis and loop shaping design procedure. Each of these controllers is characterized by fourinput and four output signals and the introduction of uncertainties on displacement gain and current gain is justified by the simple fact that during the time the component which constitutes these gains can be subjected to torn and worn which can lead the entire system to instability phenomena. The…

On the biomechanical function of scaffolds for engineering load-bearing soft tissues

2009

Replacement or regeneration of load-bearing soft tissues has long been the impetus for the development of bioactive materials. While maturing, current efforts continue to be confounded by our lack of understanding of the intricate multi-scale hierarchical arrangements and interactions typically found in native tissues. The current state of the art in biomaterial processing enables a degree of controllable microstructure that can be used for the development of model systems to deduce fundamental biological implications of matrix morphologies on cell function. Furthermore, the development of computational frameworks which allow for the simulation of experimentally derived observations represe…

Modeling seasonal branch carbon dynamics in pistachio as a function of crop load

2022

A simplified model for the prediction of carbon balance was developed to elucidate the seasonal trend of sink-source relationships in bearing and non-bearing pistachio (Pistacia vera L.) branches. Seasonal changes in growth rate of vegetative (leaf and shoot) and reproductive (infructescence) organs were monitored in branches of mature rainfed pistachio trees during the entire growing season (April–September). Simulations from the model were used to gain understanding of the implications of crop load on branch carbon (C) depletion and alternate bearing. Results showed that the pistachio branch was energetically able to sustain up to two infructescences (∼28 fruits) having a slightly positiv…

Citrus History, Taxonomy, Breeding, and Fruit Quality

2019

In May, every year since 1857, in the great park of Sans-Souci in Potsdam just outside Berlin—a park begun in 1745 by Emperor Frederick II of Hohenzollern and expanded a century later by Frederick William IV—the doors of the great Orangerie open in and a Renaissance-style garden called Sizilianischer Garten is set up. On horse-drawn carriages, large olive and citrus trees are brought outdoors, and are then raised in masters. For the young European who, in the second half of the 18th century and in the first decades of the following, traveled to Italy to see and study Renaissance culture and the remains of Greek civilization, the citrus species and fruits and groves of southern Italy became t…

Fruiting, Morphology, and Architecture of ‘Arbequina’ and ‘Calatina’ Olive Branches

2022

Two different olive cultivars grown under a high-density hedgerow system were studied to compare their fruiting and branch architecture features and to determine the possibility to use ‘Calatina’ olive trees for intensive plantings, as a local alternative to the international reference ‘Arbequina’. Weights of two-year-old branches, fruits and leaves were recorded to estimate the growth partitioning. Growth and architectural parameters, such as shoot length, vector and diameter, branching angle, branch total length, height, width, area, and branching frequency, were determined by digital image analysis. Digital images of the fruits were also used to estimate fruit maturation by peel color an…

Hardening structures isolated by double sliding devices: Seismic reliability-based design approach

2019

This study deals with seismic reliability-based design (SRBD) relationships in terms of behavior factors and displacement demands for hardening structures equipped with double friction pendu-lum system (DFPS) bearings. An equivalent 3dof system having a hardening post-yield slope is adopted to describe the superstructure behavior, whereas velocity-dependent laws are assumed to model the responses of the two surfaces of the DFPS. The yielding characteristics of the super-structures are defined for increasing behavior factors in compliance with the seismic hazard of L’Aquila site (Italy) and with NTC18 assuming a lifetime of 50 years. Considering several natural seismic records and building p…

Simulating CFRP-confinement of concrete bridge piers under sustained loads: evaluation of the compressive capacity

2018

The present paper deals with the evaluation of the compressive behaviour of circular concrete columns strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) under different levels of sustained loads and subsequently loaded until failure. The aim was to compare the effect of existing stress/strain states on the axial load-strain response of bridge piers after strengthening under sustained loads. An experimental investigation was carried out on circular plain concrete columns loaded up to low, medium and high ratios of the concrete compression capacity before the application of the CFRP-confinement. After the strengthening process, the columns were loaded until failure, comparing the resul…

Full scale tests of the base-isolation system for an emergency hospital

2019

The paper presents the results of some full-scale tests regarding the base-isolation system of the emergency room building of the polyclinic hospital in Palermo (Italy). This building has been recently realized and its base isolation system is characterized by double friction pendulum isolators. Static lateral pushing tests were aimed at identifying fundamental mechanical properties of the whole isolation level (e.g. friction forces and stiffness) in order to verify the agreement with the design hypotheses. Further dynamic tests provided different displacements of the isolated base followed by the instantaneous release (snap-back tests), in order to verify the effectiveness, the mechanical …

Sub-Optimal Control Law for Active Magnetic Bearings Suspension

2012

This paper deals with the comparison of three types of sub-optimal control law for the stable levitation of a turbojet shaft, sustained by two radial active magnetic bearings (AMBs). Shaft is considered rigid for the procedure simplification. The utilized approach leads to development of different sub-optimal control laws to use in speed-varying simulations in the angular speed of the shaft. The first control matrix is obtained by explicit relationships of the parameters of the control law vs. speed, obtained using a curve-fitting procedure neglecting the speed-varying elements out of the main diagonal of each single block constituting the entire control matrix. The second control law is ob…

ROBUST CONTROL FOR A SUSPENDED ROTATING SHAFT BY RADIAL ACTIVE MAGNETIC BEARINGS

2011

This paper shows a comparison based on dynamic behaviour of a rotating shaft when it is suspended by 4-axis active magnetic bearings under several control systems. The control systems used are μ-synthesis, loop shaping design procedure and Sub(H∞) robust control with the introduction of uncertainties on position and current gains of the actuators. Each of these controllers is characterized by four input signals and four output signals and the introduction of uncertainties on displacement gain and current gain is due to torn and worn of the components during the time, which can lead the entire system to instability phenomena. The comparison of the performances is obtained through the introdu…
