2021

The contribution analyzes two drawings from a project by Giovanni Amico (1733) for the Benedictine library of the monastic complex of San Martino delle Scale, near Palermo, whose construction has undergone successive transformations. The models pursued by the architect from Trapani confirm his interests and the interference of the client, both aimed at the production from beyond the Alps at the time of the Habsburg domination of the island.

Corrispondere al limite. Simone Weil: il pensiero e la luce

2002

Treatment of hepatitis C: critical appraisal of the evidence

2005

Chronic hepatitis C virus infection is currently the most common cause of end stage liver disease worldwide. Although the conclusions of the last National Institutes of Health Consensus Development Conferences on Hepatitis C have recently been published, several important issues remain unanswered. This paper reviews the available data using an evidence-based approach. Current evidence is sufficient to recommend IFN treatment for all patients with acute hepatitis. A later initiation of therapy yields the same likelihood of response as early treatment. A daily induction dose during month 1 is the best treatment option. The current gold standard of efficacy for treatment-naive patients with ch…

SISTEMI VERDI COME CULTURA RIGENERATIVA: STRUMENTI E TECNOLOGIE

2021

The study analyzes and proposes in the historical and in the area immediately to it adjacent, the "values-nature" of the buildings through the creation of gardens wall and vertical gardens in the elevatiloy of non-monumental buildings. The study deepens in particular the specificity of the garden roof and the garden vertical, recognizing benefits and critical issues that distinguish these green systems for construction. It also deepens the concept of resilience in close relationship sustainability and regenerative design applied to the built environment. The theme of regenerative design is studied and promoted as an adaptive strategy at the design stage; it requires you to leave nature stre…

Settore ICAR/12 - Tecnologia Dell'Architettura

Protective role of xanthophylls

2010

Xanthophylls, also known as carotenoids are a group of natural fat-soluble pigments that are especially abundant in green and yellow-orange fruits and vegetables. Based on epidemiologic data, it is now evident that carotenoids provide health benefits and particularly in eye diseases. Molecular characterization of retinal carotenoids has shown that there were actually two xanthophylls that are concentrated in macular region, namely lutein and zeaxanthin. Thanks to a strategic position within inner retinal layers, lutein and zeaxanthin are suspected to act as antioxidants in the retina in order to limit oxidative stress that results from metabolism of light. In addition, they are also suppose…

Impacto Clínico e Custo-Efetividade da FFR em Comparação à Angiografia em Pacientes com Doenças Multiarteriais Submetidos à ICP

2018

Abstract Background: In multivessel disease patients with moderate stenosis, fractional flow reserve (FFR) allows the analysis of the lesions and guides treatment, and could contribute to the cost-effectiveness (CE) of non-pharmacological stents (NPS). Objectives: To evaluate CE and clinical impact of FFR-guided versus angiography-guided angioplasty (ANGIO) in multivessel patients using NPS. Methods: Multivessel disease patients were prospectively randomized to FFR or ANGIO groups during a 5 year-period and followed for < 12 months. Outcomes measures were major adverse cardiac events (MACE), restenosis and CE. Results: We studied 69 patients, 47 (68.1%) men, aged 62.0 ± 9.0 years, 34 (49.2%…

Mortality and life expectancy trends in Spain by pension income level for male pensioners in the general regime retiring at the statutory age, 2005-2…

2022

Abstract Background Research has generally found a significant inverse relationship in mortality risk across socioeconomic (SE) groups. This paper focuses on Spain, a country for which there continues to be very little evidence available concerning retirement pensioners. We draw on the Continuous Sample of Working Lives (CSWL) to investigate disparities in SE mortality among retired men aged 65 and above over the longest possible period covered by this data source: 2005–2018. We use the initial pension income (PI) level as our single indicator of the SE status of the retired population. Methods The mortality gradient by income is quantified in two ways: via an indicator referred to as “rela…

The concept of therapeutic hierarchy for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma: A multicenter cohort study

2019

Background: The Italian Liver Cancer (ITA.LI.CA) prognostic system for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has recently been proposed and validated. We sought to explore the relationship among the ITA.LI.CA prognostic variables (ie tumour stage, functional score based on performance status and Child-Pugh score, and alpha-fetoprotein), treatment selection and survival outcome in HCC patients. Patients and Methods: We analysed 4,867 consecutive HCC patients undergoing six main treatment strategies (liver transplantation, LT; liver resection, LR; ablation, ABL; intra-arterial therapy, IAT; Sorafenib, SOR; and best supportive care, BSC) and enrolled during 2002-2015 in a multicenter It…

A nested case–control study: personal, social and environmental correlates of vigorous physical activity in adolescents with asthma

2014

Objective: Physical activity (PA) is associated with health benefits. Children and adolescents with asthma may be limited in their PA, particularly at vigorous intensity due to asthma symptoms or poor psychological adjustment to asthma. We aimed to investigate if self-perceived competence, enjoyment, support from others and social-physical environment were associated with vigorous physical activity (VPA) and secondarily to assess if such associations were modified by asthma and asthma severity. Methods: Data from a nested case–control study at 13 years of age within the birth-cohort Environment and Childhood Asthma Study were compiled from 95 participants with and 79 without asthma. The par…
