Stereoacuity After Refractive Lens Exchange With AcrySof ReSTOR Intraocular Lens Implantation
2009
Purpose: To evaluate stereoacuity before and after refractive lens exchange (RLE) with AcrySof ReSTOR intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. Methods: Stereoacuity was measured using the Titmus stereotest at 40 cm under photopic conditions (85 cd/m 2 ) before and after RLE with bilateral AcrySof ReSTOR Natural (SN60D3 model) implantation in 30 hyperopic eyes of presbyopes with low astigmatism (⩽1.00 diopter [D]). Stereoacuity measurements after implantation were compared with those found before surgery. Results: Stereoacuity was unchanged after RLE with pseudoaccommodative IOL implantation. In this population of non-cataractous hyperopes with excellent preoperative stereoacuity (46.42±1.36 se…
Technical Report: Repeatability of Contrast Sensitivity Test in Children
2020
Contrast sensitivity (CS) in children is not routinely measured in the clinical setting, although CS losses have been found in amblyopic and premature children. Thus simple visual acuity measurements do not completely assess their quality of vision. To evaluate contrast sensitivity in children, a reliable and easy test, sampling the entire spatial frequency range, is necessary. Purpose This study aimed to evaluate the repeatability and normal range of the contrast sensitivity function measured using the Topcon CC-100 instrument, in children aged between 4 and 9 years, for use as a diagnostic tool. Methods Contrast sensitivity was measured in 25 children, 11 boys and 14 girls, with normal or…
Psychomotor, Psychosocial and Reading Skills in Children with Amblyopia and the Effect of Different Treatments
2020
Amblyopia influences psychomotor and psychosocial skills, although not all studies are unanimous. Different treatments coexist, but the effect on those variables is not clear. This study aims to probe whether children with amblyopia have impairments in these areas and if different optometric treatments reduce them effectively. 50 children, diagnosed with amblyopia, and 33 without amblyopia participated in this study. Eye-hand coordination, psychosocial skills and reading abilities, were measured before and after three months of different treatments (patch, patch and near vision activities and perceptual learning). Results revealed lower scores in eye-hand coordination and some reading issue…
Visual function after implantation of an aspheric bifocal intraocular lens.
2009
Purpose To evaluate distance, intermediate, and near vision after bifocal aspheric AcrySof ReSTOR SN6AD1 intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. Setting Fernandez-Vega Ophthalmological Institute, Oviedo, Spain. Methods Binocular distance best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) (4.0 m), best distance-corrected near (40.0 cm) and intermediate (70.0, 60.0, 50.0 cm) acuities, and contrast sensitivity under photopic (85.0 candelas [cd]/m 2 ) and mesopic (3.0 cd/m 2 ) conditions with and without glare were measured postoperatively. A patient-satisfaction and visual phenomena questionnaire was administered. Results Six months postoperatively, the mean acuities (logMAR) were binocular BCVA, −0.064 ± 0.049…
Visual function after bilateral implantation of a new zonal refractive aspheric multifocal intraocular lens.
2011
Purpose To evaluate visual function after bilateral implantation of a zonal refractive aspheric multifocal intraocular lens (IOL). Setting Private practice surgery center, Valencia, Spain. Design Cohort study. Methods Consecutive eyes with cataract had bilateral implantation of Lentis Mplus LS-312 multifocal IOLs. Distance, intermediate, and near visual acuities; contrast sensitivity; defocus curves; and a quality-of-vision questionnaire, including presence of halos or dysphotopsia, were evaluated 6 months postoperatively. A control group of age-matched monofocal pseudophakic patients was included to compare contrast sensitivity function. Results In the multifocal group, the mean binocular …
Multifocal intraocular lenses for unilateral cataract in children.
2009
Purpose To evaluate the implantation of apodized diffractive multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) in children with unilateral cataract. Setting Ophthalmology Service, Hospital Clinico Lozano Blesa, Zaragoza, Spain. Design Prospective clinical study. Methods Five children between 4 and 6 years of age with unilateral cataract had cataract extraction and implantation of an apodized diffractive multifocal IOL (AcrySof Restor SN60D3). Phacoaspiration was accompanied by posterior capsulorhexis followed by an anterior vitrectomy. Uncorrected distance (UDVA), corrected distance (CDVA), and corrected near (CNVA) visual acuities; binocular function using the Worth 4-dot test and the TNO stereotest; a…
Are near visual signs and symptoms in multiple sclerosis compatible with convergence insufficiency?
2021
Clinical relevance: Optometric management of neurodegenerative diseases is essential since visual signs, such as double vision, visual acuity reduction, or oculomotricity dysfunctions, are usually present in these subjects over the course of the disease. The present paper can guide clinicians in better managing their patients with multiple sclerosis. Background: Patients with multiple sclerosis present near vision symptoms that may be related to binocular anomalies, but these symptoms have not been investigated and related to specific signs. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the binocular vision in subjects with multiple sclerosis, and to analyse if the near visual signs and symp…
Binocular vision alterations after refractive and cataract surgery: a review.
2018
To review binocular and accommodative disorders documented after corneal or intraocular refractive surgery, in normal healthy prepresbyopic patients. A bibliographic revision was performed; it included works published before 1st July 2017 where accommodation and/or binocularity was assessed following any type of refractive surgical procedure. The search in Pubmed yielded 1273 papers, 95 of which fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Few publications reporting binocular vision and/or accommodative changes after refractive surgery in normal subjects were found. The reduction in fusional vergence is the most frequently reported alteration. Anisometropia is an important risk factor for postoperativ…
Binocular, Accommodative and Oculomotor Alterations In Multiple Sclerosis: A Review
2020
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an acquired demyelinating and inflammatory neurodegenerative disease affecting the central nervous system (CNS). Clinical and subclinical ocular disturbances occur in almost all patients with MS. The objective of this narrative review was to collect and summarize the available scientific information on oculomotor, accommodative and binocular alterations that have been reported in MS. A systematic search strategy with the following descriptors was carried out: multiple sclerosis, ocular motility disorders, internuclear ophthalmoplegia, nystagmus, vergences, fixation, pupil reflex, accommodation and stereopsis. According to the search, some oculomotor alterations w…
