Influence of Geographical Location of Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) on the Recovery of Bioactive Compounds Assisted by Pulsed Electric Fields

2022

Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) has been consumed by humans since ancient times. It is rich in high added-value compounds such as chlorophylls, carotenoids and polyphenols. Pulsed electric fields (PEF) is an innovative non-thermal technique that improves the extraction of bioactive compounds from diverse sources. PEF pre-treatment (3 kV/cm, 100 kJ/kg) combined with supplementary extraction with binary solvents at different times was evaluated to obtain the optimal conditions for extraction. In addition, the results obtained were compared with conventional treatment (without PEF pre-treatment and constant shaking) and different strains of Spirulina from diverse geographical locations. The …

Tillage and crop sequence effects on productivity and technological and nutritional quality of durum wheat

2015

We report data from two consecutive growing seasons {2012/13 and 2013/14, i.e., after 21-22 years of continuous application of the treatments) on grain yield and some technological and nutritional quality parameters of durum wheat. On average, grain yield was higher with CT than NT, but the effects of tillage varied greatly by crop sequence. On average, NT caused a decrease in both grain protein and gluten contents with respect to CT when wheat was grown after faba bean, whereas no differences between NT and CT were observed for these traits for continuous wheat or berseem clover. Significant interactions between tillage system and crop sequence were observed for alveographic parameters and…

Bioactive Compounds, Nutritional Quality and Antioxidant Capacity of the Red-Fleshed Kirkwood Navel and Ruby Valencia Oranges

2022

Kirkwood Navel and Ruby Valencia are two spontaneous bud-mutations of the ordinary Washington Navel and Valencia late oranges characterized by the red coloration of their flesh. The purpose of this study was to analyze the physiological features, internal fruit quality, contents of relevant bioactive compounds and antioxidant capacity in the pulps of the red-fleshed fruits compared with the ordinary oranges during late development and maturation. In general, the content of sugars, organic acids, vitamin C, tocopherols, total phenolics and flavonoids, the hydrophilic antioxidant capacity and their changes during maturation were similar in the red-fleshed oranges and in the corresponding blon…
