Cuerpos moldeables y vidas modulables: La invención del estado holísticamente saludable como bienestar (integral)

2020

The article argues ?from the Deleuzian concepts of society of control, moulding and modulation and the Rosean theory on the economization and medicalization of life? that the expansion of the concept of health in terms of integral and subjective well-being is the effect of a socio-historical shift in the way we relate to this signifier, and therefore to our bodies and ourselves. We use this interpretative network to analyze the effects that the biopsychosocial health paradigm has had in the context of aesthetic surgery and fitness practice. As a result, we see that the expansion of the concept of health has extended the domain of medicine into the spheres of personal care and physical appea…

Small solar system bodies as granular systems

2017

Asteroids and other Small Solar System Bodies (SSSBs) are currently of great scientific and even industrial interest. Asteroids exist as the permanent record of the formation of the Solar System and therefore hold many clues to its understanding as a whole, as well as insights into the formation of planetary bodies. Additionally, SSSBs are being investigated in the context of impact risks for the Earth, space situational awareness and their possible industrial exploitation (asteroid mining). In all these aspects, the knowledge of the geophysical characteristics of SSSB surface and internal structure are of great importance. Given their size, constitution, and the evidence that many SSSBs ar…

Kropp i bevegelse i bildeboka : Känner du Pippi Långstrump?

2011

In Astrid Lindgren’s authorship, there are many bodies in motion, and one of her most movable and energetic characters is Pippi Longstocking. In the illustrated novels about Pippi (Lindgren and Nyman 1945, 1946, and 1948) there are relatively few pictures, and as a result, Lindgren’s words carry most of the story. In the novels, her words have a greater functional load (Kress 2003, 46 ) than Nyman’s pictures. Naturally then, the words convey most of the information about Pippi and the other characters’ movements. But how does the portrayal of bodies in motion change when Pippi is portrayed in picturebooks where the pictures have a lot more space, ie, a greater functi…

Prokaryotic symbiotic consortia and the origin of nucleated cells: A critical review of Lynn Margulis hypothesis.

2021

The publication in the late 1960s of Lynn Margulis endosymbiotic proposal is a scientific milestone that brought to the fore of evolutionary discussions the issue of the origin of nucleated cells. Although it is true that the times were ripe, the timely publication of Lynn Margulis' original paper was the product of an intellectually bold 29-years old scientist, who based on the critical analysis of the available scientific information produced an all-encompassing, sophisticated narrative scheme on the origin of eukaryotic cells as a result of the evolution of prokaryotic consortia and, in bold intellectual stroke, put it all in the context of planetary evolution. A critical historical reas…

Motor learning and body size within an insect brain computational model

2014

Nowadays modeling insect brains is also an important source of inspiration to develop learning architectures and control algorithms for applications on autonomous walking robots. Within the insect brain two important neuropiles received a lot of attention: the mushroom bodies (MBs) and the central complex (CX). Recent research activities considered the MBs as a unique architecture where different behavioural functions can be found. MBs are well known in bees and flies for their role in performing associative learning and memory in odor conditioning experiments [4]. They are also involved in the processing of multiple sensory modalities including visual tasks [3], different forms of learning…

A computational model for motor learning in insects

2013

The aim of this paper is to propose a computational model, inspired by Drosophila melanogaster, able to handle problems related to motor learning. The role of the Mushroom Bodies and the Central Complex in solving this problem is analyzed and plausible biologically inspired models are proposed. The designed computational models have been evaluated in simulation using a dynamic structure inspired by the fruit fly. The obtained results open the way to new neurobiological experiments focused to better understand the underlined mechanisms involved, to verify the feasibility of the hypotheses formulated and the significance of the obtained results.

The Insect Mushroom Bodies: a Paradigm of Neural Reuse

2013

This paper is devoted to discuss the implementation of models, which are inspired by the fly Drosophila melanogaster and able to handle open problems in the field of robotics such as attention, expectation and sequence learning. The role of the Mushroom Bodies (MBs) in solving these tasks is analyzed in detail and a unifying plausible biologically inspired model is proposed. The developed neural structure is able to show different capabilities in line with the paradigm of neural reuse. The same neural circuit can be exploited to accomplish multiple tasks showing interesting capabilities such as attention, expectation and delayed match-to-sample. The simulation results here reported suggest a…

Recombinant expression, in vitro refolding, and biophysical characterization of the N-terminal domain of T1R3 taste receptor

2012

Facteur d'impact (5 ans) : 1,617Notoriété à 2 ans : Acceptable (biochem.res.methods); The sweet taste receptor is a heterodimeric receptor composed of the T1R2 and T1R3 subunits, while T1R1 and T1R3 assemble to form the umami taste receptor. T1R receptors belong to the family of class C G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs). In addition to a transmembrane heptahelical domain, class C GPCRs have a large extracellular N-terminal domain (NTD), which is the primary ligand-binding site. The T1R2 and T1R1 subunits have been shown to be responsible for ligand binding, via their NTDs. However, little is known about the contribution of T1R3-NTD to receptor functions. To enable biophysical characteriza…

The Foreign Body Response to an Implantable Therapeutic Reservoir in a Diabetic Rodent Model

2021

Advancements in type 1 diabetes mellitus treatments have vastly improved in recent years. The move toward a bioartificial pancreas and other fully implantable systems could help restore patient's glycemic control. However, the long-term success of implantable medical devices is often hindered by the foreign body response. Fibrous encapsulation "walls off" the implant to the surrounding tissue, impairing its functionality. In this study we aim to examine how streptozotocin-induced diabetes affects fibrous capsule formation and composition surrounding implantable drug delivery devices following subcutaneous implantation in a rodent model. After 2 weeks of implantation, the fibrous capsule sur…

PML nuclear body-residing proteins sequentially associate with HPV genome after infectious nuclear delivery.

2019

Subnuclear promyelocytic leukemia (PML) nuclear bodies (NBs) are targeted by many DNA viruses after nuclear delivery. PML protein is essential for formation of PML NBs. Sp100 and Small Ubiquitin-Like Modifier (SUMO) are also permanently residing within PML NBs. Often, large DNA viruses disassemble and reorganize PML NBs to counteract their intrinsic antiviral activity and support establishment of infection. However, human papillomavirus (HPV) requires PML protein to retain incoming viral DNA in the nucleus for subsequent efficient transcription. In contrast, Sp100 was identified as a restriction factor for HPV. These findings suggested that PML NBs are important regulators of early stages o…
