Cross-Border Higher Education : The Expansion of International Branch Campuses

2022

AbstractThe international expansion of higher education has intensified in recent decades with a rapidly growing number of international branch campuses appearing on the scene. This study investigates the economic, cultural and institutional, and educational determinants of transnational higher education on both the extensive margin (number of international branch campuses), and the intensive margin (the total number of educational programmes offered). Using the gravity equation, we applied fixed-effect empirical methods to a panel dataset that combined and extended the raw data from campuses and master’s programmes in 33 source countries and 76 host countries in the period from 1948 to 201…

The Impact of Java Applications at Microarchitectural Level from Branch Prediction Perspective

2009

The portability, the object-oriented and distributed programming models, multithreading support and automatic garbage collection are features that make Java very attractive for application developers. The main goal of this paper consists in pointing out the impact of Java applications at microarchitectural level from two perspectives: unbiased branches and indirect jumps/calls, such branches limiting the ceiling of dynamic branch prediction and causing significant performance degradation. Therefore, accurately predicting this kind of branches remains an open problem. The simulation part of the paper mainly refers to determining the context length influence on the percentage of unbiased bran…

MEK1 Required for Invasive Growth of mIMCD3 renal Cells in a 3D Collagen Matrix

2004

Branching morphogenesis is an essential process during kidney development: This process controls epithelialization of the metanephric mesenchyme during the induction of branching structures and in this way determines the number of nephrons. Various grow factors, such HGF, have been implicated in branching morphogenesis in renal cells, including mIMCD3 ( murine inner medullary collecting duct) and MDCK cells. Growth factors which induce branching morphogenesis in renal cells also activate the MEK1/ERK pathway. The authors analyzed the potential role that this pathway might play in branching morphogenesis. The authors show that PD98059, a specific inhibitor of MEK1,inhibits branching of mIMCD…

Left bundle branch block and myocardial infarction, a diagnosis not always easy: Our experience and review of literature

2012

The occurrence of left bundle branch block (LBBB) is quite common in clinical practice. The changes in cardiac repolarization, caused by this disorder of electric conduction, may mask the presence of an acute myocardial infarction (AMI), delaying the diagnostic-therapeutic iter, with an important impact on prognosis. We describe the case of a woman of 59 years with LBBB, came to our observation for a constrictive chest pain associated with dyspnea. The diagnostic workup for suspected acute coronary syndrome (ACS), initially conducted only on the analysis of the electrocardiogram (negative TnI at entry), showed the presence of coronary arteries free of stenosis. However, the diagnostic confi…

The antioxidant effect in controlling thermal degradation of a LDPE blow film

2004

It is well known that antioxidants are widely used to prevent thermal degradation of high density and linear low density polyethylene. Antioxidants are not always present in low density polyethylene and only small amounts are usually added to these resins. In this work the effect of an antioxidant system on a low density resin having MFI (190 °C/2.16 kg)=2 g/10′ and density 0.9230 g/cm3 has been studied. Its effect on melt viscosity has been studied by means of a batch mixer and the torque vs time behaviour has been analysed. The results show that a maximum in the torque vs time curve can be seen for the material containing antioxidant. In contrast, the material without antioxidant does not…

An Efficient and Secure Energy Trading Approach with Machine Learning Technique and Consortium Blockchain

2022

In this paper, a secure energy trading mechanism based on blockchain technology is proposed. The proposed model deals with energy trading problems such as insecure energy trading and inefficient charging mechanisms for electric vehicles (EVs) in a vehicular energy network (VEN). EVs face two major problems: finding an optimal charging station and calculating the exact amount of energy required to reach the selected charging station. Moreover, in traditional trading approaches, centralized parties are involved in energy trading, which leads to various issues such as increased computational cost, increased computational delay, data tempering and a single point of failure. Furthermore, EVs fac…

Diastolic left ventricular function in relation to circulating metabolic biomarkers in a population study

2019

AimsWe studied the association of circulating metabolic biomarkers with asymptomatic left ventricular diastolic dysfunction, a risk-carrying condition that affects 25% of the population. Methods and resultsIn 570 randomly recruited people, we assessed in 2005–2010 and in 2009–2013 the multivariable-adjusted correlations of e’ (early left ventricular relaxation) and E/e’ (left ventricular filling pressure) measured by Doppler echocardiography with 43 serum metabolites, quantified by magnetic resonance spectroscopy. In 2009–2013, e’ cross-sectionally increased (Bonferroni corrected p ≤ 0.016) with the branched-chain amino acid valine (per one standard deviation increment, +0.274 cm/s (95% conf…

Troponin I Assay for Identification of a Significant Coronary Stenosis in Patients with Suspected Acute Myocardial Infarction and Wide QRS Complex

2016

Background Common ECG criteria such as ST-segment changes are of limited value in patients with suspected acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and bundle branch block or wide QRS complex. A large proportion of these patients do not suffer from an AMI, whereas those with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) equivalent AMI benefit from an aggressive treatment. Aim of the present study was to evaluate the diagnostic information of cardiac troponin I (cTnI) in hemodynamically stable patients with wide QRS complex and suspected AMI. Methods In 417 out of 1818 patients presenting consecutively between 01/2007 and 12/2008 in a prospective multicenter observational study with suspected AMI a pro…

Troponin T — a reliable marker of perioperative myocardial infarction?

1993

Following cardiac surgery, electrocardiography and creatine kinase isoenzyme MB (CK-MB) activities are of limited value in diagnosing a non-transmural infarction. With the recent availability of an assay to detect serial levels of the specific cardiocyte contractile protein troponin T the possibility has been increased of closing a diagnostic gap among cardiosurgical patients. Ninety patients with severe diffuse three-vessel disease undergoing myocardial revascularization were grouped by their postoperative electrocardiographic (ECG) findings (group I--unchanged ECG; group II--new Q-waves representing perioperative myocardial infarction (PMI)). Serial levels of troponin T and the activity o…

Diagnosis of perioperative myocardial necrosis following coronary artery surgery — a reappraisal of isoenzyme analysis

1990

Although the routine determination of CK-MB activity is widely used after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), the diagnosis of a perioperative myocardial necrosis remains arbitrary. The intention of the present study was to develop discriminative enzymatic parameters of CK-MB activity in a collective of 710 patients following CABG. Patients were grouped according to their postoperative electrocardiogram (ECG). For each patient, the time activity curve of CK-MB was determined. The total amount of CK-MB was calculated by integrating the area beneath the CK-MB activity curve. Patients presenting with an unchanged postoperative ECG (group I) or a new bundle branch block with uncompromised h…
