DISK REFLECTION SIGNATURES IN THE SPECTRUM OF THE BRIGHT Z-SOURCE GX 340+0

2008

We present the preliminary results of a 50 ks long XMM-Newton observation of the bright Z-source GX 340+0. In this Letter we focus on the study of a broad asymmetric emission line in the Fe K alpha energy band, whose shape is clearly resolved and compatible with a relativistically smeared profile arising from reflection on a hot accretion disk extending close to the central accreting neutron star. By combining temporal and spectral analysis, we are able to follow the evolution of the source along its Horizontal Branch. However, despite a significant change in the continuum emission and luminosity, the line profile does not show any strong correlated variation. This broad line is produced by…

On the Spectral Evolution of Cygnus X-2 along its Color-Color Diagram

2002

We report on the results of a broad band (0.1-200 keV) spectral study of Cyg X-2 using two BeppoSAX observations taken in 1996 and 1997, respectively, for a total effective on-source time of ~100 ks. The color-color (CD) and hardness-intensity (HID) diagrams show that the source was in the horizontal branch (HB) and normal branch (NB) during the 1996 and 1997 observation, respectively. Five spectra were selected around different positions of the source in the CD/HID, two in the HB and three in the NB. These spectra are fit to a model consisting of a disk blackbody, a Comptonization component, and two Gaussian emission lines at ~1 keV and ~6.6 keV, respectively. The addition of a hard power-…

On metal-deficient barium stars and their link with yellow symbiotic stars

2005

This paper addresses the question of why metal-deficient barium stars are not yellow symbiotic stars (YSyS). Samples of (suspected) metal-deficient barium (mdBa) stars and YSyS have been collected from the literature, and their properties reviewed. It appears in particular that the barium nature of the suspected mdBa stars needs to be ascertained by detailed abundance analyses. Abundances are therefore derived for two of them, HD 139409 and HD 148897, which reveal that HD 148897 should not be considered a barium star. HD 139409 is a mild barium star, with overabundances observed only for elements belonging to the first s-process peak (Y and Zr). The evidence for binarity among mdBa stars is…

Patterns of variability in Be/X-ray pulsars during giant outbursts

2012

The discovery of source states in the X-ray emission of black-hole binaries and neutron-star low-mass X-ray binaries constituted a major step forward in the understanding of the physics of accretion onto compact objects. While there are numerous studies on the correlated timing and spectral variability of these systems, very little work has been done on high-mass X-ray binaries, the third major type of X-ray binaries. The main goal of this work is to investigate whether Be accreting X-ray pulsars display source states and characterise those states through their spectral and timing properties. We have made a systematic study of the power spectra, energy spectra and X-ray hardness-intensity d…

A search for diffuse absorption bands in carbon-rich stars -- I. Barium and related stars

2003

The results of a search for interstellar and circumstellar absorption lines in high-resolution optical spectra of seven late-type stars are presented. All these stars are single-lined spectroscopic binaries with unseen companions, presumably white dwarfs. Some residual material indicative of recent mass transfer from an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star might still be associated with the systems. Peculiar energy distribution and the sodium D 1 and D 2 lines give direct evidence about the material in the line of sight in some cases. Absorption features of simple carbon-bearing molecules (C 2 , CN) have been detected in most of the examined stars, confirming a carbon-rich nature of the corre…

Decays of110Rhand112Rhto the near neutron midshell isotopes110Pdand112Pd

1999

The decays ${}^{110}\mathrm{Rh}$ and ${}^{112}\mathrm{Rh}$ have been investigated using on-line mass separation with the ion-guide technique. Extended decay schemes have been constructed for both the low- and high-spin states in ${}^{112}\mathrm{Rh}$. Mixing ratios for the collective transitions from the ${2}_{2}^{+}$ and ${3}_{1}^{+}$ states in ${}^{112}\mathrm{Pd}$ have been measured by $\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ angular correlation. The presence of two sets of ${0}^{+}$ and ${2}^{+}$ states in the 1.1\char21{}1.4 MeV range suggests the existence of an intruder band, the energy of which is the lowest in ${}^{110}\mathrm{Pd}$ with two neutrons fewer than the mid…

Measurements of the Absolute Branching Fractions of B±→K±Xcc̅

2006

We study the two-body decays of ${B}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$ mesons to ${K}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$ and a charmonium state ${X}_{c\overline{c}}$ in a sample of $210.5\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{fb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ of data from the BABAR experiment. We perform measurements of absolute branching fractions $\mathcal{B}({B}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}{X}_{c\overline{c}})$ using a missing mass technique, and report several new or improved results. In particular, the upper limit $\mathcal{B}\mathbf{(}{B}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}X(3872)\mathbf{)}l3.2\ifmmode…

CONDENSATION OF REFRACTORY METALS IN ASYMPTOTIC GIANT BRANCH AND OTHER STELLAR ENVIRONMENTS

2014

The condensation of material from a gas of solar composition has been extensively studied, but less so condensation in the environment of evolved stars, which has been mainly restricted to major compounds and some specific element groups such as the Rare Earth elements. Also of interest, however, are refractory metals like Mo, Ru, Os, W, Ir, and Pt, which may condense to form refractory metal nuggets (RMNs) like the ones that have been found in association with presolar graphite. We have performed calculations describing the condensation of these elements in the outflows of s-process enriched AGB stars as well as from gas enriched in r-process products. While in carbon-rich environments (C …

A Novel Method for the Measurement of Half-Lives and Decay Branching Ratios of Exotic Nuclei

2019

A novel method for simultaneous measurement of masses, Q-values, isomer excitation energies, half-lives and decay branching ratios of exotic nuclei has been demonstrated. The method includes first use of a stopping cell as an ion trap, combining containment of precursors and decay-recoils for variable durations in a cryogenic stopping cell (CSC), and afterwards the identification and counting of them by a multiple-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MR-TOF-MS). Feasibility has been established by recording the decay and growth of $^{216}$Po and $^{212}$Pb (alpha decay) and of $^{119m2}$Sb (t$_{1/2}$ = 850$\pm$90 ms) and $^{119g}$Sb (isomer transition), obtaining half-lives and bran…

Lifetime of 26S and a limit for its 2p decay energy

2010

Unknown isotope 26S, expected to decay by two-proton (2p) emission, was studied theoretically and was searched experimentally. The structure of this nucleus was examined within the relativistic mean field (RMF) approach. A method for taking into account the many-body structure in the three-body decay calculations was developed. The results of the RMF calculations were used as an input for the three-cluster decay model worked out to study a possible 2p decay branch of this nucleus. The experimental search for 26S was performed in fragmentation reactions of a 50.3 A MeV 32S beam. No events of 26S or 25P (a presumably proton-unstable subsystem of 26S) were observed. Based on the obtained produ…
