High purity recovery of magnesium and calcium hydroxides from waste brines
2021
Direct disposal of concentrate brines, generated by many industrial sectors, causes serious environmental concerns. An industrial sector that produces high concentrate brines is softening water industry, in particular during the regeneration of ion exchange resins. These brines are mainly rich in sodium, magnesium and calcium chlorides, thus, their regeneration, by removal/recovery of magnesium and calcium, can be a valuable option to turn the brine into a source of minerals and reduce disposal costs and environmental concerns. In this regards, one of the goals of EU-funded ZERO BRINE project is to develop a treatment chain for the valorization and regeneration of spent brines from water so…

The behaviour of zirconium and hafnium during water-rock interaction
2018
Abstract Zr and Hf are two elements with same ionic charge and similar ionic size at a given coordination number. Despite the Zr/Hf ratio is quite constant in meteorites and lithospheric rocks, in natural waters can be either higher or lower compared to values of interacting minerals and rocks. Here, we reanalyze very recent published and present new data on continental and brine waters indicating that the Zr and Hf behavior is dependent on the properties of the authigenic phases formed during the water-rock interaction process. Our results show that water pH in the range between 1 and 9 and water ionic strength in the range between 0.001 and 4 mol kg−1 are responsible for the change of the…

This work focuses on the saling up of the REA Power plant through the installation of two larger RED modules
Valorization of surface-water RO brines via Assisted-Reverse Electrodialysis for minerals recovery: performance analysis and scale-up perspectives
2021
Reverse Osmosis (RO) plays a key role in seawater and brackish water desalination to fulfill the growing demand for fresh water. In recent years, RO has also been more and more adopted for the treatment and potabilization of surface waters, leading to two main problems: (i) the depletion in minerals of the product water, making it aggressive and unsuitable for drinking purposes and (ii) the production of a concentrated brine requiring proper disposal. Permeate remineralization post-treatments include pH adjustment and addition of minerals, such as bicarbonates, calcium and magnesium, which are essential for human health and required to meet drinking water guidelines. However, such solutions…
Lab-scale investigation of a pressure retarded osmosis module fed by "non-conventional" salinity gradient
2015
Aim of this work has been to investigate the feasibility of PRO technology for power generation from saline streams originated by different water treatments plants, namely brine from a thermal desalination plant and fresh water from a sewage treatment plant.
Pressure Retarded Osmosis: a Membrane Process for Environmental Sustainability
2016
Salinity Gradient Power (SGP) based on the controlled mixing between two solutions at different salinities is a viable alternative to produce power from renewable sources. Pressure Retarded Osmosis (PRO) is one of the most promising technologies proposed so far for the exploitation of such energy source. Apart from the typical source of salinity gradients, namely river water and seawater, more and more interest has been raised recently towards the use of non-conventional saline solutions. In this work, water originating from a sewage treatment plant is used as the dilute solution (feed solution), while brine exiting from a desalination plant is used as the concentrate (draw solution), thus …
