Il Cretto di Gibellina, opera di Land Art progettata dall'artista umbro Alberto Burri nel 1981, sorge nell'area occupata in precedenza dai ruderi della vecchia città distrutta dal terremoto del 1968. Il contributo vuole mettere in evidenza come l'opera si innesti concretamente nel paesaggio in cui si inserisce, attuandone una vera e propria risignificazione in grado di attribuire un nuovo volto al territorio e un nuovo ordine ai luoghi che la ospitano.

Il senatore Ludovico Corraro invita Alberto Burri a Gibellina Nuova affinché possa donare una sua opera alla cittadina. Il maestro tuttavia, dopo aver fatto un sopralluogo presso Gibellina Vecchia, concepisce e crea il celeberrimo ed imponente "Grande Cretto". Esso è una produzione artistica dal carattere tragico, monumentale e dalla forma labirintica. E' la pittura che si fa scultura, architettura ed urbanistica diventando un "unicum" a livello mondiale di "Land-Art". The essay aims to make explicit the methodological criteria underlying the semiotic analysis of a space, taking as an example the case of the Grande Cretto that Alberto Burri realised in Gibellina in the second half of the 1980s. An impressive Land Art work that presents at first sight a series of clear-cut oppositions, but which on closer inspection calls them into question, rather emphasising gradations and nuances.
