MATHEMATICS AS A QUASI-EMPIRICAL SCIENCE

2006

The present paper aims at showing that there are times when set theoretical knowledge increases in a non-cumulative way. In other words, what we call ‘set theory’ is not one theory which grows by simple addition of a theorem after the other, but a finite sequence of theories T1, ..., T n in which Ti+1, for 1 ≤ i < n, supersedes T i . This thesis has a great philosophical significance because it implies that there is a sense in which mathematical theories, like the theories belonging to the empirical sciences, are fallible and that, consequently, mathematical knowledge has a quasi-empirical nature. The way I have chosen to provide evidence in favour of the correctness of the main thesis of t…

Voci di donne nel "Corpus" di Alberto Favara

2016

Between 1902 and 1905 Alberto Favara collected, from direct execution of his interviewees, 1090 Sicilian folk songs which constituted the "Corpus" published, after his dead, in 1957, by Ottavio Tiby. Favara sometimes reported, along with transcriptions, the performer’s name and some few other data. Among the people he heard there is a relatively high number of women, in a constant proportion in the various repertoires. Women interviewed by Favara, like men, show interest and skill in music; they evaluate its psychagogic quality; point out the differences between the songs by the place of origin, or by the activities they accompany; distinguish the performing ways and habits; are proud to re…

Intermediate hosts of Angiostrongylus cantonensis in Tenerife, Spain.

2015

The nematode Angiostrongylus cantonensis is the causative agent of human angiostrongy- liasis, the main clinical manifestation of which is eosinophilic meningitis. Although this para- site has been found recently in its definitive rat host in Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain), showing a widespread distribution over the north-east part of the island, there are no avail- able data regarding which snail and/or slug species are acting as intermediate hosts on this island. Consequently, the objective of this work was to determine the possible role of three mollusc species, Plutonia lamarckii , Cornu aspersum and Theba pisana , as intermediate hosts of A . cantonensis in Tenerife. Between 2011 and…

2016

The paper proposes a critical reflection on Remo Cantoni’s philosophical thought, with particular regards to his anthropological point of view that addresses concepts such as “critical humanism” and “horizontal connection”. The strict relationship between anthropology and participation are his main topics on which he has made outstanding remarks in the second decade of XXth century in the Italian cultural panorama. Since his early works, Cantoni points out the need to develop a different way of analysing the pluridimensionality of human beings and widely debates contemporary European cultural context after the end of World War II. The paper tries to put in evidence how Cantoni’s anthropolog…
