Combination of different advanced oxidation processes and activated carbons for treatment of salt water

2015

Bilgewater is a corrosive polluted effluent from the bilge of ships that mainly originates from seawater infiltration and leakage of engine oil and fuel. Each year, thousands tons of hydrocarbons from bilge are discharged at sea. In order to prevent hydrocarbon discharge at sea from the bilge of ships, the Internation Maritime Organization (IMO) enacted the MARPOL 73/78 convention in which effluents are now limited to those with maximun oil content of 15 ppmv.

Carbons from second generation biomass as sustainable supports for catalytic systems

2018

In this study activated carbons were produced from the wood of three different wood species (pine, birch, spruce). The resulting activated carbons were characterized in bulk for ash content, carbon content (elemental analyses), specific surface area, and pore size distribution, and at the surface by measuring the autogenerated pH and studying their structure by XPS. All the samples presented high surface areas and appeared to be mesoporous materials (mesopores >80%). The carbons were then used as support for AuPt nanoparticles and tested in the liquid phase oxidation of glycerol (GLY) and in the hydrogenation of levulinic acid (LA), two important chemicals from cellulose-based biomass. The …

A quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics study of the acylation reaction of TEM1 β-lactamase and penicillanate

2000

The acylation step in β-lactamase catalyzed hydrolysis of β-lactams has been explored by means of a quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics approach (AM1/CHARMM). The TEM1 enzyme, a class A β-lactamase, and the penicillanate constitute the system employed in our study. The entire molecular system is divided into a quantum and a classical region: the quantum part is composed by the substrate, the serine Ser70 and the essential moieties of key active site residues, Lys73, Ser130 and Glu166, as well as a water molecule present in the active site region, while the classical part is formed by the remaining residues and structural waters of the enzyme. In particular, the sequence of steps proposed …

Histologic and histomorphometric assessment of eggshell-derived bone graft substitutes on bone healing in rats

2013

Objective: The objective of this study was to histologically and histomorphometrically evaluate the efficacy of the new formulations of eggshell-derived calcium carbonate in rats. Study Design: The study was conducted on 30 adult male rats. Four standardized and circular intrabony defects were created in the both maxilla and mandibula of each animal. Three different graft materials were prepared as follows: 1) Material A: Eggshell-derived calcium carbonate combined with carrageenan gel, 2) Material B: Eggshell-derived calcium carbonate combined with xanthan gum gel, and 3) Material C: Eggshell-derived calcium carbonate powder. The right mandibular defect sites were grafted with Material A i…

Assessing the risk of cytomegalovirus DNAaemia in allogeneic stem cell transplant recipients by monitoring oxidative-stress markers in plasma

2017

The level of antioxidants, such as thiol-containing tripeptide glutathione (GSH), in cytomegalovirus (CMV)-infected cells is notably increased. We previously showed that GSH levels in plasma, as measured by untargeted 1H nuclear magnetic resonance, are higher in allogeneic stem cell transplant (allo-SCT) recipients who subsequently develop CMV viraemia. We hypothesized that the net level of oxidative-stress markers present in plasma may be reduced in patients who develop CMV DNAaemia compared to those who do not. We serially monitored the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and carbonylated proteins (CPs) early after allo-SCT and assessed whether they could predict the occurrence of CMV DNAaemi…

Active paraplegics are protected against exercise-induced oxidative damage through the induction of antioxidant enzymes

2016

Exercise improves functional capacity in spinal cord injury (SCI). However, exhaustive exercise, especially when sporadic, is linked to the production of reactive oxygen species that may have a detrimental effect on SCI. We aimed to study the effect of a single bout of exhaustive exercise on systemic oxidative stress parameters and on the expression of antioxidant enzymes in individuals with paraplegia. The study was conducted in the Physical Therapy department and the Physical Education and Sports department of the University of Valencia. Sixteen paraplegic subjects were submitted to a graded exercise test (GET) until volitional exhaustion. They were divided into active or non-active group…

Effects of gender on resting leg blood flow: implications for measurement of regional substrate oxidation.

1998

Jensen, Michael D., Tu T. Nguyen, A. Hernández Mijares, C. Michael Johnson, and Michael J. Murray. Effects of gender on resting leg blood flow: implications for measurement of regional substrate oxidation. J. Appl. Physiol. 84(1): 141–145, 1998.—These studies were designed to examine whether the respiratory quotient (RQ) of leg tissue (primarily skeletal muscle) would increase to a greater degree in women than in men during meal ingestion. We found that mean leg and systemic RQ values were similar in men under both basal and fed conditions, whereas the agreement was poor in women. In women, leg RQ values tended to be greater than the systemic RQ, whereas splanchnic RQ values tended to be l…

Elevated protein carbonyl and HIF-1α levels in eyes with proliferative diabetic retinopathy.

2013

Purpose: To evaluate the role of protein carbonyls and hypoxia inducible factor-1a (HIF-1a) in diabetic eyes with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). Methods: Prospective consecutive controlled observational study was performed. Vitreous samples were collected at the start of the 3-ppp vitrectomy. Protein carbonylation analysis was performed by Western blotting with antibody against 2,4-Dinitrophenol (anti-DNP), following derivatization of protein carbonyls with 2,4 Dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNHP). Protein carbonylation was quantified by scanning densitometry analysis and relativized to the total amount of protein into the ponceau staining of membranes. Vitreous HIF-1 a was determined w…
