Ocean acidification bends the mermaid's wineglass

2015

Ocean acidification lowers the saturation state of calcium carbonate, decreasing net calcification and compromising the skeletons of organisms such as corals, molluscs and algae. These calcified structures can protect organisms from predation and improve access to light, nutrients and dispersive currents. While some species (such as urchins, corals and mussels) survive with decreased calcification, they can suffer from inferior mechanical performance. Here, we used cantilever beam theory to test the hypothesis that decreased calcification would impair the mechanical performance of the green alga Acetabularia acetabulum along a CO 2 gradient created by volcanic seeps off Vulcano, Italy. Cal…

2016

Abstract Manzi et al. (in press) took the opportunity offered by our paper to repeat again all the set of ideas supporting an interpretative model of the Messinian Salinity Crisis (MSC), a model they assert to be valid for the whole Mediterranean basin. What emerges from reading this long comment may be summarized in one criticism of our article: we have not systematically applied their interpretative model to our data! The aim of our paper was not to promote their ideas, but to submit the results of more than 20 years of field studies and petrographical and geochemical analyses on Sicilian and Calabrian sequences of the Messinian “Calcare di Base”. It is out of our purpose to enumerate aga…

A possible bridge between Adria and Africa: New palaeobiogeographic and stratigraphic constraints on the Mesozoic palaeogeography of the Central Medi…

2010

Abstract Dinosaur records in central and southern Italy testify to the occurrence of a diverse dinosaur fauna on the Apennine and Apulian carbonate platforms at least from the Tithonian to the Santonian. Most of the palaeogeographic reconstructions show these domains as topographically isolated areas, separated by deep pelagic basins and far from emerged continental areas. Thus, they hardly justify the long-lasting occurrence of these terrestrial vertebrates. Recent studies on the Mesozoic Panormide Carbonate Platform (western Sicily) yielded important stratigraphical and palaeontological data, which provide evidence for a convincing explanation of this unresolved problem. The recent discov…

Multidisciplinary approach for outcropping and subsurface Permian-Cenozoic deepwater carbonates (Central Sicily): outcome for paleogeography of the S…

2016

An integrated stratigraphic study of the outcropping and buried Permian-Cenozoic deep-water carbonate successions have been performed. These successions form some of the tectonic units, mostly buried beneath the Late Neogene sedimentary cover, in the fold and thrust belt of Central Sicily. Three main successions, pertaining to the well known Lercara, Imerese and Sicanian domains, have been reconstructed on the basis of a detailed facies analysis, seismostratigraphic interpretation, biostratigraphy (mostly based on palynological data) and comparison between outcropping and subsurface deep-water sediments. The main results reveal a continuous sedimentation of the deep-water Southern Tethyan S…

Lithostratigraphy of Sicily

2018

This book offers as comprehensive an overview as possible of the lithostratigraphy of the Italian region of Sicily, taking into account the multiplicity of formational and terminological variability developed over more than a century of studies and publications. It presents stratigraphic terminology, the geological lexicon and the main stratigraphic subdivisions that are not familiar to Sicilian geologists. The new stratigraphic methods and the use of formations as mapping units have prompted the acquisition of new lithostratigraphic data, and a review of the previous units and their comparison with the new collected data, enabling the definition of a number of new lithostratigraphic units.…

Sedimentology and biostratigraphy of a peritidal succession across the Triassic/Jurassic boundary: Monte Sparagio, north western Sicily

2016

A 490 m thick section of shallowing upward peritidal cycles spanning the Triassic-Jurassic boundary is exposed along the northern slope of Mount Sparagio in the San Vito Lo Capo Peninsula (Western Sicily). A detailed microfacies analysis allowed defining the aspects of cyclic sedimentation of this section and especially the stratigraphic occurrence patterns of benthic foraminifera and algae across the T/J boundary. The lower part of cycles commonly shows medium to low energy subtidal facies, typical of the inner lagoon of the carbonate platform. Subtidal facies such as coral bafflestone in some cycles suggest more open lagoonal conditions (patch reefs), while some higher energy layers such …

2018

With the aim to assess the possible influence of the carbon variations on the benthic communities across the Triassic Jurassic boundary we have carried out sedimentological, biostratigraphic and stable isotope studies on an about 220 m thick peritidal section cropping out in Northwestern Sicily. The subtidal facies of the lower and middle part of this succession show the common occurrence of large and thick megalodontids and a benthic foraminiferal assemblage with Triasina hantkeni and Aulotuortids that supports a Rhaetian age. In the lower part of the succession, a significative biotic perturbation is evidenced by a sudden reduction of the size, shell thickness and abundance of the large m…
