How is Building Information Modeling Influenced by Project Complexity?
2014
Virtual design and construction of buildings and architectural spaces require extensive collaboration among a diverse set of design professionals. The authors analyze e-collaboration performance in two construction projects of differing complexity, to gain an understanding of how collaborative design based on building information modeling (BIM) is influenced by the complexity of the building project. The findings suggest that the perceived business value of BIM depends on project complexity and that BIM-based collaboration does not yield unconditional positive implications for all types of construction projects. The authors argue that current practice would benefit from a more structured ap…
Stationary battery technologies in the U.S.: Development Trends and prospects
2017
Abstract In the last years, stationary battery systems started to attract the attention of stakeholders thanks to their unique ability to decouple power generation and load over time, providing the ancillary services necessary for the stability and the reliability of the electrical system. This is especially true in the presence of high levels of penetration of renewable energy technologies, like wind and solar photovoltaic (PV), because of increased fluctuations in the electricity produced by these renewable sources. Despite the growing interest in energy storage technologies, the academic literature has not completely assessed the development trends of this sector. In order to fill this g…
On Detection of Yaw and Roll Angle Information for Vehicle Oblique Crash using Hough Transform
2014
When performing vehicle crash tests, it is common to capture high frame rate video (HFR) to observe the vehicle motion during the impact. Such videos contain a lot of information, especially when it comes to geometric data. The yaw and roll angles from the HFR video is detected by using the Hough Transform and Matlab's Image processing Toolbox. The measured Yaw angle from the HFR video are compared with real life test data captured with a gyroscopic device inside the vehicle during the oblique vehicle impact.
Analysis of Approaches to Internet Traffic Generation for Cyber Security Research and Exercise
2015
Because of the severe global security threat of malwares, vulnerabilities and attacks against networked systems cyber-security research, training and exercises are required for achieving cyber resilience of organizations. Especially requirement for organizing cyber security exercises has become more and more relevant for companies or government agencies. Cyber security research, training and exercise require closed Internet like environment and generated Internet traffic. JAMK University of Applied Sciences has built a closed Internet-like network called Realistic Global Cyber Environment (RGCE). The traffic generation software for the RGCE is introduced in this paper. This paper describes …
MODERN DIDACTIC TERMS IN THE CONTENT OF LATVIAN LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE STUDIES
2015
The article is devoted to a pending matter in the Latvian linguistics and methodology of language and literature – the formation of the system of terminology. The 90-ies of the 20th century when Latvia gained its national independence brought changes not only in the political and economic life but also in the terminology because new realities, which appeared in life, needed new names. Essential transformation in education brought along changes in the nomination system of the specific realities in the sphere. By establishing broader contacts with the pedagogical information field of the Western countries, translating scientific articles one comes in touch with specific concepts of the sphere…
Alternative Income Sources – Entrepreneurship Development or Households’ Economic Needs after the COVID-19 Crisis?
2021
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to identify and analyze the COVID-19 pandemic implications for alternative income sources in transition economy with the dispute based on literature and research. Design/Methodology/Approach: The following research methods were used. Desk extensive research and analysis of raw data collected for the study. An original in-depth interview form was developed, and scientific dispute based on subject literature was conducted. A research hypothesis, aimed at verifying the research problem, were formulated. Findings: The study highlights that, aside from passion, the main reason for undertaking additional economic activity is to obtain additional income. Pract…
Socio-cultural factors and transnational entrepreneurship
2011
This article addresses theoretical and empirical issues concerning the emergent field of transnational entrepreneurship. We discuss issues regarding the antecedents of transnational entrepreneurship focusing specifically on the socio-cultural factors affecting this phenomenon in the Spanish context. Entrepreneurship, ethnic and transnational entrepreneurship literature is combined with institutional approach to explain what and how different socio-cultural factors influence the emergence and development of transnational entrepreneurship in Catalonia (in the north-east of Spain). We do this by looking at four case studies of transnational entrepreneurs with different ethnicity (Ecuadorian, …
Delayed chronic intracranial subdural hematoma complicating resection of a tanycytic thoracic ependymoma
2015
Background To demonstrate that the diagnosis of an intracranial subdural hematoma should be considered for patients presenting with acute or delayed symptoms of intracranial pathology following resection of a spinal tumor. Case description We present a case of a 57-year-old woman found to have a chronic subdural hematoma 1 month following resection of a thoracic extramedullary ependymoma. Evacuation of the hematoma through a burr hole relieved the presenting symptoms and signs. Resolution of the hematoma was confirmed with a computed tomography (CT) scan. Conclusion Headache and other symptoms not referable to spinal pathology should be regarded as a warning sign of an intracranial subdural…
Presurgical role of MRI tractography in a case of extensive cervicothoracic spinal ependymoma
2017
Background: Intramedullary spinal ependymoma is a tumor, hardly characterizable with conventional magnetic resonance (MR) imaging only. MR diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) with three dimensional fiber tracking reconstructions allows the evaluation of the relationship between neoplasm and white matter fiber tracts, being a powerful tool in presurgical planning. We present DTI findings in a case of a young female with an extensive cervicothoracic spinal ependymoma. Case Description: The patient complained of a 2 month history of acute urinary retention, weakness and numbness on the lower limbs and the upper left limb. She underwent MR imaging that showed an extensive cervicothoracic spinal mass…
Effect of ultrasound technology combined with binary mixtures of ethanol and water on antibacterial and antiviral activities of Erodium glaucophyllum…
2019
Abstract Erodium glaucophyllum is a common Mediterranean herb known for its health benefits. In this study, Erodium extracts obtained from different extraction methods (conventional vs ultrasound-assisted extraction) and extraction solvents (aqueous and hydroethanolic) were evaluated in microbiological media to determine their effects on bacteria (Salmonella enterica, Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria innocua, Bifidobacterium lactis and Lactobacillus casei) and antiviral activity (hepatitis A virus and murine norovirus). Both, the extraction method and solvent were found to be important contributing factors. Ultrasound-assisted extraction yielded the highest level of desirable Erodium-extract…
