Using organizational influence processes to overcome IS implementation barriers: lessons from a longitudinal case study of SPI implementation

2014

A fundamental tenet of the information systems (IS) discipline holds that: (a) a lack of formal power and influence over the organization targeted for change, (b) weak support from top management, and (c) organizational memories of prior failures are barriers to implementation success. Our research, informed by organization influence, compellingly illustrates that such conditions do not necessarily doom a project to failure. In this paper, we present an analysis of how an IS implementation team designed and enacted a coordinated strategy of organizational influence to achieve implementation success despite these barriers. Our empirical analysis also found that technology implementation and …

Reframing health care through social media

2015

This teaching case presents the story of the Hospital Campus (HC) project and its effort to reframe health-care services for the elderly through the adoption of social media. In a world of global ageing, in which an increased number of elderly patients will be cared for by a shrinking number of workers, a primary challenge is how to use technology to provide better and more efficient services for the elderly. The HC campus project focuses on how to involve information technology-illiterate elderly patients and their social networks in the design and use of social media services to improve their quality of life. In describing the development of the project, we focus on the elderly patients’…

La lucha contra la brecha salarial de género en el Derecho social europeo

2017

[EN] Starting from the assumption that equal pay for female and male workers form parts of the foundations of European Social Law (both as an essential principle and a fundamental right), this essay reflects on two important challenges in order to face the gender wage gap: firstly, the role of social partners and relevant organisations of civil society in salary negotiations; and secondly, the extension of the scope of the valid comparator beyond the same undertaking to make easier the protective role of national judges (alongside other elements such as the assessment of the weight of statistics or the articulation of the proof burden). The author concludes that, in both aspects, the synerg…

Two-Dimensional Polytypism of “Crystalline” (C5Me5)ReO3

1996

Crystals of Cp*ReO3 present a rare case of two-dimensional polytypism. They consist of a polytypic packing (in the bc plane) of ordered polar chains of three-legged piano-stool Cp*ReO3 molecules (stacked head-to-tail along the a axis). The two-dimensional polytypism arises from the possibility of building a similar motif both with 2-fold screw axes and inversion centers as packing operators, i.e. from the possibility of packing together neighboring chains of equal or different polarity.

Sociocultural Factors and Female Entrepreneurship in the Innovative Service Sector in Catalonia: A Qualitative Analysis

2013

The purpose of this chapter is to analyse the main sociocultural factors and their impact on female entrepreneurship in the innovative service sector in Catalonia (Spain) and to establish differences to male initiatives using the institutional approach as a theoretical framework. Based on a comparative case study, the principal findings suggest that social networks, role models, entrepreneurial attitudes and family context are important determinants of female entrepreneurship. Family context is, in particular, a crucial factor, which might have a larger impact on women than men. The research contributes both theoretically, with the creation of knowledge in less researched areas such as fema…

ROBUST CONTROL STRATEGIES FOR MULTI—INVENTORY SYSTEMS WITH AVERAGE FLOW CONSTRAINTS

2006

Abstract In this paper we consider multi—inventory systems in presence of uncertain demand. We assume that i) demand is unknown but bounded in an assigned compact set and ii) the control inputs (controlled flows) are subject to assigned constraints. Given a long—term average demand, we select a nominal flow that feeds such a demand. In this context, we are interested in a control strategy that meets at each time all possible current demands and achieves the nominal flow in the average. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for such a strategy to exist and we characterize the set of achievable flows. Such conditions are based on linear programming and thus they are constructive. In …

The Hermitian part of a Rickart involution ring, I

2014

Rickart *-rings may be considered as a certain abstraction of the rings B(H) of bounded linear operators of a Hilbert space H. In 2006, S. Gudder introduced and studied a certain ordering (called the logical order) of self-adjoint Hilbert space operators; the set S(H) of these operators, which is a partial ring, may be called the Hermitian part of B(H). The new order has been further investigated also by other authors. In this first part of the paper, an abstract analogue of the logical order is studied on certain partial rings that approximate the Hermitian part of general *-rings; the special case of Rickart *-rings is postponed to the next part.

IoT-Based Home Monitoring: Supporting Practitioners' Assessment by Behavioral Analysis.

2019

This paper introduces technical solutions devised to support the Deployment Site - Regione Emilia Romagna (DS-RER) of the ACTIVAGE project. The ACTIVAGE project aims at promoting IoT (Internet of Things)-based solutions for Active and Healthy ageing. DS-RER focuses on improving continuity of care for older adults (65+) suffering from aftereffects of a stroke event. A Wireless Sensor Kit based on Wi-Fi connectivity was suitably engineered and realized to monitor behavioral aspects, possibly relevant to health and wellbeing assessment. This includes bed/rests patterns, toilet usage, room presence and many others. Besides hardware design and validation, cloud-based analytics services are intro…

Classification of Actual Sensor Network Deployments in Research Studies from 2013 to 2017

2020

Technologies, such as Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) and Internet of Things (IoT), have captured the imagination of researchers, businesses, and general public, due to breakthroughs in embedded system development, sensing technologies, and ubiquitous connectivity in recent years. That resulted in the emergence of an enormous, difficult-to-navigate body of work related to WSN and IoT. In an ongoing research effort to highlight trends and developments in these technologies and to see whether they are actually deployed rather than subjects of theoretical research with presumed potential use cases, we gathered and codified a dataset of scientific publications from a five-year period from 2013 t…
