Thoracic shaping technique to avoid residual space after extended pleurectomy/decortication

Extended pleurectomy/decortication or radical pleurectomy is defined as a lung-sparing surgical procedure for malignant pleural mesothelioma. A significant size mismatch between the thoracic cavity and the reduced size of the remaining lung might occur as a result of multiple resections at different sites and lead to residual thoracic space. Residual thoracic space and significant air leakage might result in postoperative complications. A simple technique of diaphragm reconstruction to avoid the residual thoracic space and to reduce the incidence of postoperative complications is described.

Transnasal endoscopy for direct visual control of esophageal stent placement without fluoroscopy

Placement of self-expanding metal stents (SEMSs) is a well-established treatment for esophageal stenosis and postoperative anastomotic leaks. Conventional endoscopic procedures for SEMS placement require fluoroscopic guidance, but transnasal endoscopy (TNE) with ultraslim endoscopes may allow precise stent release under direct visual control without the need for fluoroscopy. We have studied the role of TLR4 in murine defenses against Candida albicans in two TLR4-defective mouse strains: C3H/HeJ mice which have defective TLR4 signaling, and TLR4-/- knockout mice. Objective: To identify the overall survival and prognostic factors of malignant lymphoma of the oral cavity and the maxillofacial region. Study Design: Clinical records data were obtained in order to determine overall survival at 2 and 5 years, the individual survival percentage of each possible prognostic factor with the actuarial technique, and the survival regarding the possible prognostic factors with the actuarial technique and the Log-rank and Cox's regression tests. Therapy of Peritoneal Murine Cancer with Biological Response Modifiers

We have used a murine renal adenocarcinoma of spontaneous origin (Renca) inplanted in the peritoneal cavity to study the therapeutic potential of biological response modifiers (BRMs) used alone or in conjunction with chemotherapy. This tumor model is therapeutically challenging since following intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection, the tumor grows progressively with hemorrhagic ascites, abdominal metastases to lymph nodes, liver, spleen, most serous membranes, and, in some animals, metastases to extra-abdominal sites (lungs). In the absence of therapy, death invariably occurs within 36 +/- 2 days. The tumor is efficiently lysed in 4 hours by peritoneal cells isolated from mice treated with BRMs.…
