Dynamische Bildgebung der Nasenhaupthöhle und der Nasennebenhöhlen im MR mittels polarisiertem 3Helium

2001

sinuses with polarized 3 helium MRI. Purpose: Reduced or blocked ventilation of the paranasal sinuses is probably the most important factor in the development of sinusitis. Recently, the use of optically polarized noble gas isotopes has attracted increasing interest for use in a variety of promising MR applications. The aim of this study was to test the feasibility of imaging and visualization ventilation of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinus in MR by inhalation of hyperpolarized 3 helium. The goal was to evaluate ventilation defects of the paranasal sinuses. Volunteers and Methods: Three volunteers were enrolled in the study. 3 Helium was polarized to 40-50% by direct optical pumping. 30…

Acoustic rhinometry in pre-school children.

1993

Acoustic rhinometry was performed in 35 normal nose-breathing children between 3 and 6 years. The average cross-sectional areas at the nasal valve, at the anterior end of the turbinates, and in the nasopharynx were 0.34 +/- 0.06 cm2, 0.35 +/- 0.08 cm2 and 1.37 +/- 0.48 cm2 respectively. The average minimal cross-sectional area was 0.29 +/- 0.06 cm2. The minimal cross-sectional area was located at the nasal valve in 14 and at the anterior end of nasal turbinates in 21 of the 35 children. As would be expected, the cross-sectional areas at different sites of the nasal cavity increased with increasing age of the children. But, whereas the minimal cross-sectional area increased by 0.024 cm2 per …

Invagination of the Sphenoid Sinus Mucosa after Endoscopic Endonasal Transsphenoidal Approach and Its Significance

2016

Objective To describe the clinical features of invagination of the sphenoid sinus mucosa (ISM) and compare them with other similar cases using a visual analog scale (VAS) to assess the various nasal symptoms and to discuss its clinical significance and means of prevention. Study design Retrospective chart review at a tertiary referral center. Methods Between 2010 and 2015, 8 patients who had undergone EETSA surgery displayed postoperative ISM. The comparison group consisted of 147 patients who underwent the same surgical procedures and were diagnosed with the same diseases. Pre- or postoperative paranasal sinus computed tomography (PNS CT) and VAS were performed and subsequently analyzed. R…

Retro-nasal aroma release is correlated with variations in the in-mouth air cavity volume after empty deglutition.

2012

International audience; We hypothesized that interindividual differences in motor activities during chewing and/or swallowing were determining factors for the transfer of volatile aroma from the in-mouth air cavity (IMAC) toward the olfactory mucosa. In our first experiment, we looked for changes in IMAC volume after saliva deglutition in 12 healthy subjects. The mean IMAC volume was measured after empty deglutition using an acoustic pharyngometer device. Based on the time course of the IMAC volume after swallowing, we discerned two groups of subjects. The first group displayed a small, constant IMAC volume (2.26 mL ±0.62) that corresponded to a high tongue position. The second group displa…

Comparison of the effects of rapid maxillary expansion and surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion in the sagittal, vertical and transverse pla…

2011

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the effects of rapid maxillary expansion (RME) and surgically assisted RME (SARME) in the sagittal, vertical, and transverse planes. Study design: Orthodontic records of 28 patients were selected retrospectively and divided into two treatment groups. Group 1 comprised 14 patients (4 boys, 10 girls, mean age 14.2 ± 0.74 years) who had been treated with RME. Group 2 comprised 14 patients (4 boys, 10 girls, mean age 19.6 ± 2.73 years) who had been treated with SARME. Measurements were performed on lateral and posteroanterior cephalograms and dental casts obtained before (T0) and after (T1) expansion. Results: Statistically significan…

Malignant and benign sinonasal paragangliomas

2013

Objectives/Hypothesis To report on the clinical course and management of sinonasal paragangliomas (PGLs). Study Design and Methods Retrospective chart review of six patients with PGLs of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. Results Three patients had tumors with malignant clinical behavior with cerebral metastases or infiltration of brain and local recurrence, despite surgery and/or radiotherapy, while three patients demonstrated a benign course. Conclusion Sinonasal paragangliomas are frequently malignant. If malignant, they are very aggressive, with rapid local spread as well as high metastatic potential despite surgical resection; and they have a poor prognosis. Malignancy cannot be d…

Accidental migration of dental implant into the nasal cavity: Spontaneous expulsion through the nose

2021

Implant migration into the nasal fossa is a rare complication and it requires extraction by anterior rhinoscopy. We report a clinical case of placement of short dental implants, fixed or intruded in the nasal fossa floor, which was aspirated by the patient and spontaneously expelled a few days later. To the best of our knowledge, there have been no reports of spontaneously expulsion through the nasal cavity. Key words:Dental implant, nasal cavity, accidental migration.

T/NK “Nasal Type” Lymphomas: An Italian Cooperative Retrospective Survey.

2004

Abstract T/NK “nasal type” lymphoma is a neoplasm that shows a peculiar geographical distribution. In fact most of the reported cases come from Far Eastern countries such as Hong Kong, and Central America, particularly from Mexico; this kind of lymphoma occurrs rarely in western countries. Between 1997 and 2004, 19 new cases of T/NK nasal type lymphoma were diagnosed in 7 Italian Hematology Division. Patients characteristics were as follows: all caucasian; 14 men and 5 women; median age 53 years (range 20–80). The presentation at the onset was in the nasal cavity or adjacent structures in 15 cases, who presented symptoms like nasal obstruction, dysphagia, orbital edema; in 2 cases, skin les…

Recurrence in a patient with a 10-year history of sinonasal mucosal melanoma manifesting as facial swelling

2017

Sinonasal mucosal melanoma is a rare tumor that develops slowly and may manifest with non specific signs and symptoms, causing significant delay in diagnosis. Local recurrence is common and usually occurs within the first two years after the initial treatment. Prognosis of recurrent lesions is poor and 5-year survival ranges between 10-47%. We report the clinical, radiographic, histopathological and immunohistochemical findings of a recurrent sinonasal mucosal melanoma which was diagnosed 10 years after the initial treatment, in a patient who presented with unilateral facial swelling and one-sided difficulty in breathing of two years duration. We discuss the causes of late diagnosis and rev…
