The blue shark Prionace glauca is a top predator with one of the widest geographic distributions of any shark species, yet classified as critically endangered in the Mediterranean Sea, and Near Threatened globally. Abstract: We investigated the effects of woody plant colonization of abandoned pastures on soil and litter organic carbon (C) stocks and nitrogen (N) content along a bioclimatic transect in a semi-arid environment (Sicily, Italy). Soil samples were taken in three successional stages (grazed pasture, shrubland, forest) within each of three bioclimates (supramediterranean - “supra”, mesomediterranean - “meso”, thermomediterranean - “thermo”). Organic C and N in litter and soil (0-10 cm and 10-30 cm depth) were determined, as well as soil bulk density. Recent Change—River Run-off and Ice Cover

This chapter compiles and assesses information on run-off and discharge from rivers within the Baltic Sea drainage basin. Some information is also available on ice duration on inland waterways. Although decadal and regional variability is large, no significant long-term change has been detected in total river run-off to the Baltic Sea over the past 500 years. A change in the timing of the spring flood has been observed due to changes in the timing of snowmelt . Change in temperature seems to explain change in run-off better than does precipitation. Later start dates for ice formation on waterways, and earlier ice break-up dates have resulted in shorter periods of ice cover.

The collectivisation of agriculture and the development and application of land improvement “melioration” programmes and technologies, as well as the construction of kolkhoz centres during the Soviet era in Latvia was extensive and has a legacy on the post-Soviet landscape and agricultural economy. Morphology, internal structure and genesis of the Burtnieks drumlin field, Northern Vidzeme, Latvia

Abstract The Burtnieks drumlin field is one of the largest in the Baltic countries. It occupies a broad and uneven bedrock macrodepression. The uneven distribution of drumlins is related to the relief of the bedrock surface. Needle-shaped drumlinoids occur in the proximal part of the drumlin field, and they gradually merge into typical drumlin forms downglacier. This morphologic change reflects the differences in their genesis as suggested by internal structure. The cores of drumlins consist mainly of glaciotectonically deformed Pleistocene sediment and, in some places, also weakly cemented, dislocated Middle Devonian sandstone.
