Social functioning as a significant factor in women's help-seeking behaviour during the climacteric period.

1993

In order to identify the psychosocial factors that lead to the demand for medical care related to the menopause, we carried out a case/control study. A case was defined as a woman who sought gynaecological care due to "menopausal complaints" (n = 85) and a control referred to a woman drawn at random from the general population. The cases showed greater psychiatric morbidity and social dissatisfaction, a lower level of diffused social support and a higher frequency of severe life events and the controls showed greater social maladjustment in objective conditions. The multivariate analysis (logistic regression) carried out after adjusting all the relevant variables, indicated that the demand …

Fonoaudiología y derechos humanos

2018

Neuropsychology and anorexia nervosa. Cognitive and radiological findings

2012

Introduction: Research into neuropsychological impairments present in the patients suffering from anorexia nervosa (AN) has advanced considerably, in the past decades. It now provides neuropsychologists with a wide field of knowledge of the changes found in the cerebral and cognitive capabilities of these patients, as well as their reversible or static features, thereby yielding a characteristic profile of neuropsychological impairment in AN. Development: We present a review updated to December 2010 of the results delivered by studies of both morphological and cognitive changes, providing us with an updated theoretical and practical framework for conducting future research. Conclusions: The…

Global change and human vulnerability to vector-borne diseases

2013

This e-book presents a collection of research and review articles related to the spread, control and basic understanding of vector borne diseases all over the world. It is well known that a multidisciplinary point of view is necessary in order to develop a global vision of this emergent problem. Therefore, in order to promote this holistic approach to the knowledge of vector borne diseases, this e-book contains a total of 19 collaborations of entomologists, epidemiologists, virologists, parasitologists, bacteriologists, zoologists and veterinarians of Europe, Africa, Asia, and America. The title perfectly reflects some of the global factors that are behind the emergence and/or reemergence o…

Syndrome of autosomal recessive polycystic kidneys with skeletal and facial anomalies is not linked to the ARPKD gene locus on chromosome 6p

2000

We report on two sibs, both males, one born at 37 the other at 24 weeks of gestation, both with a syndrome similar to that seen in three sets of sibs by Gillessen-Kaesbach et al. [1993: Am J Med Genet 45:511–518]. Both propositi had polycystic kidneys and hepatic fibrosis indistinguishable from that seen in autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD), and skeletal and facial anomalies. Skeletal abnormalities included “butterfly” vertebrae, square shape of pelvis, and brachymelia. The facial anomalies included hypertelorism, epicanthic folds, and anteverted nares. Additional external findings were apparently low-set ears and a short neck. Histopathological examination of the kidney…

W05-01 - Rationale and Design of an RCT Comparing “EMC-Strategy” with TAU in Patients with Major Depression - the EMC Trial

2010

IntroductionFor Major Depression, current guidelines recommend treatment durations of 3-8 weeks until optimisation in case of insufficient outcome. Many retrospective studies indicate that improvement (HAMD-17 decrease ≥20%) occurs usually within 10-14 days and that non-improvement after 14 days of treatment is highly predictive for poor clinical outcome.MethodsIn level 1 of the EMC trial, non-improvers after 14 days of antidepressant treatment will be randomised to “early medication change” (EMC) strategy or treatment according to current guidelines (TAU). EMC schedules treatment optimisations on day 15 and day 29 in case of non-improvement. TAU schedules a medication change after 28 days …

Treating Sleep Disorders with an ACT-Based Behavior Change Support System

2017

Suitable duration and appropriate quality of sleep are essential for mental and cognitive wellbeing. Sleep disorders, whether mild or severe, have proven to have adverse effects on general wellbeing. One's quality of life could be disturbed as a consequence of various mental conditions, sleep disorders being one of them. Researchers have started paying attention to designing, implementing and evaluating eHealth interventions to address sleep disorders. In this chapter, we highlight findings from a field study that was conducted to evaluate effect of software features on a Web-based intervention for sleep disorders. Tyyne is a Web-based eHealth intervention that will be repeatedly mentioned …

Corrected whole blood biomarkers - the equation of Dill and Costill revisited.

2018

Abstract An exercise bout or a dehydration often causes a reduction in plasma volume, which should be acknowledged when considering the change in biomarkers before and after the plasma changing event. The classic equation from Dill and Costill (1974, J. Appl. Physiol., 37, 247–248) for plasma volume shift is usually utilized in such a case. Although this works well with plasma and serum biomarkers, we argue in this note that this traditional approach gives misleading results in the context of whole blood biomarkers, such as lactate, white cells, and thrombocytes. In this study, we demonstrate that to calculate the change in the total amount of circulating whole blood biomarker, one should u…

P674Metabolic deregulation in myocardial infarction is mediated by PGC-1 alpha pathway

2014

Purpose: In the context of myocardial infarction (MI) the availability of metabolites is clearly restricted, therefore a fuel metabolic shifts takes place. Previous studies have indicated that peroxisome proliferator activated receptor co-activator alpha (PGC-1α) pathway is a crucial regulator of cardiac metabolism in response to cardiac stress. Here we address the role of PGC-1α in regulating metabolic changes of MI. Methods: We studied a group of 12 common swine in which anterior MI was induced by means of angioplasty balloon inflation. A series of 6 swine were sacrificed at 48h post-infarction (acute infarction group) and another series of 6 swine were sacrificed at 3 weeks (chronic infa…

Manualized psychodynamic-interactional group therapy for the treatment of somatoform pain disorders.

2010

Medically unexplained and clinically significant symptoms of pain are highly prevalent in the general population. More than one third of all patients in general practices and various departments of hospitals suffer from somatoform disorders with pain being the main complaint of 70% of these patients. This treatment manual is the first disorder-specific, psychodynamically oriented treatment for these patients. Based on psychodynamic-interactional group psychotherapy, it focuses on disorder-specific aspects as well as on psychic and interpersonal problems which have resulted from adverse childhood experiences and insecure attachment. In three treatment phases comprising an “information and mo…
