3D digitization of transparent objects by polalization techniques in IR & by triangulation in UV
2011
Two non-conventional methods for the 3D digitization of transparent objects via non-contact measurement are reported in this thesis. 3D digitization is a well acknowledged technique for opaque objects and various commercial solutions based on different measurement approaches are available in the market offering different types of resolution at different prices. Since these techniques require a diffused or lambertian surface, their application to transparent surfaces fails. Indeed, rays reflected by the transparent surface are perturbed by diverse inter-reflections induced by the refractive properties of the object. Therefore, in industrial applications like quality control, the transparent …
Electrochemical characterization of mangrove sediments: A proposal of new proxies for organic matter oxidation
2019
Abstract The voltammetric response of microparticulate deposits resulting from solvent evaporation of ethanolic extracts of mangrove sediments in contact with aqueous acetate buffer is hereby described. Dated sediment cores sampled from the Peruvian mangrove system (“Manglares de Tumbes” National Sanctuary) presented voltammetric responses dominated by oxidative signals of organic components that exhibit significant variations depending on the depth. Voltammetric data allowed for the definition of electrochemical indexes representative of the electrochemically oxidable organic matter fraction. These electrochemical indexes were fEAOM (for the total amount of organic matter being electrochem…
Production technology of early-hellenistic lime-based mortars originating from a punic-Roman residential area in palermo (sicily)
2016
The topic of this study is the mineralogical and petrographic characterization of lime-based mortars of Hellenistic-Roman age (3rd century BCE), collected from a residential area located in the present historical centre of Palermo, near the remains of the Punic-Roman walls. The collected mortars have been analyzed by optical microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy, coupled with energy-dispersive spectrometry. The aim of the study was the characterization of the mortars as pertaining to their aggregate and binder composition, aggregate size distribution and aggregate/binder ratio, so as to establish the provenance of raw materials and acquire informatio…
Dissemination of wine-related yeasts by migratory birds.
2013
The present work was undertaken to evaluate the contribution of migratory birds in the environmental dissemination of yeasts. Four sites (Mazara del Vallo, Lampedusa, Ustica and Linosa), representing the main stop-over points in Sicily, were analysed during spring and autumnal bird migration and 349 birds (belonging to 10 families) were ringed and analysed for yeast presence. A total of 125 yeasts were isolated and identified by a multiple genotypic approach, consisting of restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) of 5.8S rRNA gene and 26S rRNA and sequencing of D1/D2 domain of the 26S rRNA gene, which resulted in the recognition of 18 species, including the technological relevant Sac…

Microstructural manipulation of electrospun scaffolds for specific bending stiffness for heart valve tissue engineering
2012
Biodegradable thermoplastic elastomers are attractive for application in cardiovascular tissue construct development due to their amenability to a wide range of physical property tuning. For heart valve leaflets, while low flexural stiffness is a key design feature, control of this parameter has been largely neglected in the scaffold literature where electrospinning is being utilized. This study evaluated the effect of processing variables and secondary fiber populations on the microstructure, tensile and bending mechanics of electrospun biodegradable polyurethane scaffolds for heart valve tissue engineering. Scaffolds were fabricated from poly(ester urethane) urea (PEUU) and the deposition…
Sensitivity of SHG-FROG for the characterization of ultrahigh-repetition-rate telecommunication laser sources
2004
International audience; We analyze experimentally the sensitivity of second-harmonic generation frequency-resolved optical gating (SHG-FROG) for the complete intensity and phase characterization of both a sinusoidal beat signal and a train of 1.3 ps pulses at a repetition rate of 160 GHz at 1550 nm. Using a commercially-available optical spectrum analyzer in the SHG-FROG set-up, incident pulses with energies of only 125 and 190 fJ, which correspond to the beat signal and the 1.3 ps pulse train, respectively, have been accurately characterized.
Genetic Diversity of Major Olive Varieties from Southern Tunisia
2013
Considering the importance of olive-growing in Tunisia, microsatellite (SSR) analysis was used to study the genetic variation among twenty olive accessions from southern Tunisia. This set of olive microsatellites showed potential utility for genetic studies and it could contribute to the development of strategies for Tunisian germplasm conservation and breeding. Unweighted pair group method cluster analysis was performed and cultivars separated in three main groups. Five polymorphic simple sequence repeats (SSR) loci were employed and they revealed 38 alleles with a mean number of 7.6 alleles per locus. Genetic variability was wide as indicated by high values of both observed heterozygosity…
Seasonal characterization of nutritional, technological and antioxidant properties of Opuntia ficus-indica Mill. mucilage
2022
Opuntia ficus-indica Mill. fruit and cladodes are a source of mucilage, a carbohydrate complex, as well as of phytochemicals and other nutrients, useful in the food industry. Despite the environmental-based composition variability studied, there is no information on its seasonal variability, which is particularly important for its industrial use. In this study, some technological, nutritional, and bioactive properties of O. ficus-indica Mill. cladodes mucilage were analysed during the seasonal growth period. Total proteins did not change during the whole period and the lipid content significantly decreased from winter to the onset of summer. The fatty acid profile showed high levels of palm…
