Herbal Mixtures: Aspects Related to the Quality of Chinese Medicine Formulas and Perspectives for Products Registration in Brazil

2021

Traditional medicine products are easily found in different regions of the world. Given this scenario, the World Health Organization (WHO) is very interested in the rational insertion of these resources, especially in primary pharmaceutical care in emerging countries. One of the main concerns of the WHO is with the population's access to traditional medicine products without quality guaranteed by regulatory and health control agencies in the country of origin. In ancient Chinese Pharmacology and Medicine, products based on associated drugs, used by boiling in water (decoction), successfully contribute to maintaining the health of Chinese people. In Brazil, the sanitary legislation of herbal…

Information entropy-based classification of triterpenoids and steroids from Ganoderma

2015

Abstract A set of 71 triterpenoid and steroid compounds from Ganoderma were periodically classified using a procedure based on information entropy with artificial intelligence. Six features were used in hierarchical order to classify the triterpenoids and steroids structurally. The phytochemicals belonging to the same group in the periodic table present similar antioxidant activity, and those compounds belonging to the same period exhibit maximum resemblance. The periodic classification is related to the experimental bioactivity and antioxidant potency data that are available in the literature: a steroid with a three-ketone group conjugated with two carbon–carbon double bonds in the right s…

Why Asian children outperform students from other countries? Linguistic and parental influences comparing Chinese and Italian children in preschool e…

2016

This paper focusing on the complex situation of the Italian multiculturalism and trying to reply to why Asian children mathematically outperform students from other countries, discusses from the epistemological point of view, Chinese children’s skills before to start their formal education in Italian educational school context. A review of the literature, comparing pre-schoolers competences of Asian and Western students, reveals two important influenced factors: linguistic and parental stimuli. In particular many researchers showed that the structure of the Chinese language provides in children a head start in basic math skills, for example to discover, since preschool activities, a pre-alg…

Biology, cultivation, and medicinal functions of the mushroom Hericium erinaceum

2016

Hericium erinaceum (Bull.: Fr.) Pers. is an edible fungus of great significance in medicine. It is rarely found in Europe, in contrast, it is common in Japan and North America. Its fruitbodies have been well-known for hundreds of years in traditional Chinese medicine and cuisine. A cradle of H. erinaceum cultivation is Asia. In Eastern Europe is rare in natural habitats, but can be successfully cultivated. Both fruitbodies and mycelia are rich in active, health promoting substances. Tests of substances extracted from this mushroom carried out on animals and in vitro have given good results. They can be used in the treatment of cancer, hepatic disord…

Reciprocal regulation of endothelial nitric-oxide synthase and NADPH oxidase by betulinic acid in human endothelial cells.

2007

Nitric oxide (NO) produced by endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) is a protective principle in the vasculature. Many cardiovascular diseases are associated with reduced NO bioactivity and eNOS uncoupling due to oxidative stress. Compounds that reverse eNOS uncoupling and increase eNOS expression are of therapeutic interest. Zizyphi Spinosi semen (ZSS) is one of the most widely used traditional Chinese herbs with protective effects on the cardiovascular system. In human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) and HUVEC-derived EA.hy 926 cells, an extract of ZSS increased eNOS promoter activity, eNOS mRNA and protein expression, and NO production in a concentration- and time-dependent manner. Maj…

Lo Ouzhan shibao (1915-1918): legami tra stampa cinese e voci estere tra le pagine della cronaca di guerra

2019

The Shanghai weekly magazine Ouzhan shibao was the longest-running and most suc- cessful Chinese war magazine reporting the latest circumstances of First World War. Its rich rep- ertoire of war reports and battlefield photographs provided the Chinese readership with vivid and exhaustive accounts, but being a French ruled magazine it did not conceal its bias toward the Allied powers and against Germany. In this perspective, Chinese interests were discussed as part of a global strategy, but never defended per se, as demonstrated by the positive depiction of Japan, an Allied country but still a fierce antagonist of Chinese sovereignty.

Traditional Chinese herbal medicine at the forefront battle against COVID-19: Clinical experience and scientific basis.

2020

Abstract Background Throughout the 5000-year history of China, more than 300 epidemics were recorded. Traditional Chinese herbal medicine (TCM) has been used effectively to combat each of these epidemics’ infections, and saved many lives. To date, there are hundreds of herbal TCM formulae developed for the purpose of prevention and treatment during epidemic infections. When COVID-19 ravaged the Wuhan district in China in early January 2020, without a deep understanding about the nature of COVID-19, patients admitted to the TCM Hospital in Wuhan were immediately treated with TCM and reported later with >90% efficacy. Approach We conducted conduct a systematic survey of various TCM herbal pre…

Combining the wisdoms of traditional medicine with cutting-edge science and technology at the forefront of medical sciences

2019

Abstract Background A central topic is to bring traditional medicine to a new horizon by integrating the latest advances in genomic, metabolomic, and system biological approaches, in order to re-examine the wisdom and knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and other traditional medicines. Purpose A new consortium has been formed at a conference of the Harvard Medical School, Boston, on October 29–30, 2018. The main goal was to build a collaborative platform for the scientific investigation of traditional medicine with cutting edge sciences and technologies at the forefront of biomedicine. Results Traditional medicines are largely experience-based, but the scientific basis is largel…
